Unit 8 Once Upon a Time
1. once prep. 在······上 (与 on同义, 但 upon 常用于正式场合或 once upon a time 等短语中)
once upon a time= long (long) ago 从前, 很久以前(常用在故事的开头)
Once upon a time, an emperor loved/ liked clothes very much.
从前，一个皇帝非常喜爱衣服。 (教材第59页，2a)
2. bite v. 咬;叮 (bite-bit-bitten) n. 咬 (一口) , 咬伤
The mouse bit through the net. 老鼠咬穿了网。 (教材第58页, 1b)
3.“动词+er/r”常构成对应的名词
hunt-hunter, teach-teacher, work-worker, drive-driver, write-writer, farm (种地) - farmer等
4. promise v./n. 承诺, 保证, 诺言 promise(not) to do承诺(不) 做某事
promise sb sth= promise sth to sb 答应给某人某物 make/ keep a promise 许下/遵守诺言
The mouse promised to help the lion. 老鼠承诺帮助狮子。 (教材第58页, 1b)
5. breakv. 打破, 违反, 折断(break-broke-broken) n. 休息, 间歇(= rest) have a break/ rest 休息一下The farmer's son broke his leg. 农夫的儿子摔断了他的腿。 (教材第58页, 1c)
6. wise adj. 有智慧的, 高明的 wisely adv. 明智地, 聪明地
7.否定疑问句：由助动词、情态动词或 be动词的否定形式(多用缩略形式)加上主语和其他成分构成，多用来表示惊讶、感叹、责难、建议或看法等，通常译为： “难道不(没)……吗 ”
否定疑问句的答语和一般疑问句的答语一样，肯定回答用 yes，否定回答用 no，但翻译成汉语时，yes要译为“不”, no则译为“是”
否定疑问句
1、 But don't you want to read it by yourself 但是难道你不想自己读吗
Yes,I do. 不，我想。
2、 Isn't he a student 他不是一个学生吗
No, he isn't. 是的，他不是。
3、 Can't she go swimming 她不能去游泳了吗
Yes, she can. 不，她能去。
8. lie ①vi. 撒谎(lie-lied-lied-lying) lie to sb 对某人撒谎 He is lying. 他在撒谎。
Two brothers came and lied to him... 兄弟两人来对他撒谎说………
②vi. 位于……位置(lie-lay-lain)
lie to (位于某范围外) Liaoning lies to the northeast of Shaanxi.
lie in (位于某范围内) Guangdong lies in the south of China.
lie on(位于两地接壤处) Jilin lies on the north of Liaoning.
③vi. 躺, 平躺 lie down 躺下休息
④n. 谎言 tell a lie/ tell lies 撒谎

9. pretend v. 假装; 伪装 pretend(not) to do 假装(不) 做某事
They pretend to make the clothes. 他们假装做衣服。 (教材第59页, 2a)

decide(not) to do 决定(不) 做某事 make a decision to do 决定做某事

12. praise v./n. 赞扬, 赞美 praise sb for(doing) sth 表扬某人(做) 某事
People in the street/ city praised them. 街道上/城里的人都赞美他们。 (教材第59 页, 2a)
In the street 介词短语修饰前面的名词 people(此知识点为介词短短做后置定语)译为：街上的人
A headmaster praised a boy for his brave act of using Heimlich maneuver (海姆立克急救法) to save hisclassmate's life.一位校长因一个男孩使用海姆立克急救法勇敢地挽救了同学的生命而表扬了他.

13. afraid adj. 害怕的, 担心的 be afraid of sb/ sth 害怕某人/某物
be afraid to do= be afraid of doing 害怕做某事
They were afraid to look silly, too.他们也害怕看起来愚蠢。
14. sudden adj. 突然的 suddenly adv. 突然地, 出乎意料地 (常放在句首状语)
15. start to do/ doing= begin to do/ doing 开始做某事
They started/ began laughing. 他们开始大笑。
16. atfirst 起初，最初(有比较的意思，暗示后面有变化)可用于句首或句末
first of all 首先,第一(强调顺序)常用于句首

17. truth n. 事实; 真相(常与 the连用) true adj.真实的, 符合事实的 truly adv. 真正, 确实
tell the truth 说实话 To tell you the truth 说实话(常位于句首)

18. by doing sth 通过做某事 make(a lot of) money 赚(很多) 钱
We can make a lot of money by lying to the emperor.我们可以通过对皇帝撒谎来赚很多钱。(教材60页, 2d)
19. hate to do/ hate doing 讨厌做某事
I hate to be different. 我讨厌(和别人) 不一样。
I hate making mistakes. 我讨厌出错。
20. 词义辨析: sometimes, some times, sometime, some time
sometimes 频度副词 有时 表示动作发生的不确定性，用 how often 来提问
some times 名词短语 几次/几倍 用 how many times来提问(time: /C/ 次、倍)
sometime 副词 某个时候 表示某个不确定不具体的时间，常用一般过去式或将来时，用when 来提问
some time 名词短语 一段时间 句中谓语动词常用延续性动词， how long 来提问
①Sometimes I get up quite late. 有时我起床很晚。
②I have read the book some times. 这本书我读了好几遍了。
③I decide to try paragliding with my sister sometime next week.
我决定下周的某个时间和我姐姐去尝试滑翔伞运动。

21. smile at... 对......微笑 laugh at... 嘲笑......; 因......而发笑

23. ugly adj.丑陋的,难看的,令人厌恶的 (作表语或定语)
