Entry into school sports teams (as well as cheerleading teams) can be quite competitive. Many people try out for the teams, but fail to get on them because they lack the skills . “Football” means a different sport in the US to the rest of the world. American football players wear big helmets and lots of protective clothing and must score a touchdown. In the US, football is commonly known as “soccer”.
