Diana Nyad was a professional swimmer. She was in her twenties when she decided to swim around Manhattan. The first time she tried, she didn’t succeed. But she didn’t give up. She tried again and swam the twenty-eight miles in less than eight hours. Then she had another goal: to swim from Cuba to Florida, a distance of 110 miles. She didn’t stop to sleep. But she didn’t finish. Jellyfish attacked her, and the weather threw her off course. Did she try again Yes, but not until thirty-three years later.
Nyad retired from competitive swimming in her twenties. For the next thirty years, she didn’t swim at all. She became a sportscaster (体育比赛解说员) and a journalist. But she didn’t stop all physical activities. She always kept in shape. Every Friday she took a one-hundred-mile bike ride.
In 2007, when Nyad was sixty years old, her mother died. She started to think about her own life. In the thirty years when she didn’t swim, she always thought about the possibility of trying again. She didn’t want to die without achieving her goal. She started to train again. By the summer of 2011, she tried again — and failed again — after twenty-nine hours in the water. She tried three more times and failed to reach Florida each time. What kinds of problems did she face There were attacks by jellyfish, bad weather, and breathing problems from asthma (哮喘). How did she solve the problem of jellyfish For her fifth attempt, she wore a bodysuit and mask to protect against jellyfish stings. On August 31, 2013, after fifty-three hours of swimming, she reached the Florida shore, thirty-five years after her first attempt. Nyad achieved what younger and stronger swimmers could not.

The dodo — a giant flightless pigeon — is a well-known example of a phenomenon referred to as the “island effect”. One result of the “island effect” is animals going one way or the other, developing into either giants or dwarfs (侏儒).
According to the rule, small species tend to become much bigger while larger species shrink. Around 10,000 years ago, islands in the Mediterranean were covered in dwarf hippos and elephants. At the other end of the scale, the dodo of Mauritius and the Komodo dragon are examples of oversized species.
A 2021 study found that the extent of animal dwarfism or gigantism depends partly on the size and isolation of the island. Smaller, more remote islands resulted in more obvious size changes in species. The study also found that factors such as limited resources and space were a major cause of animals downsizing as they adapted to smaller habitats. On the other hand, lower competition and the lack of natural enemies meant species were often freed from evolutionary restrictions in size.
Although many island species are now extinct, there are several species you can still find today. According to a recent study published in the journal Science, the plus-sized and tiny-sized island creatures are subject to the extinction risk. After examining 1,231 existing species and 350 extinct ones over the last 23 million years, the researchers found that those with the most dramatic size changes had the highest extinction risk. The arrival of human settlers on islands raised the extinction rate by more than ten times. People bring diseases and predators, damaging island ecosystems. While hunting, humans destroy habitats, along with island species.
8. What is the purpose of mentioning the dodo in Paragraph 1
A. To prove the result of the “island effect”.
B. To introduce the “island effect” phenomenon.
C. To show the significance of the dodo as an extinct species.
D. To discuss the historical presence of oversized species on islands.
9. What does the underlined word “shrink” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Become extinct. B. Become fewer. C. Become weaker. D. Become smaller.
10. What is the main idea of Paragraph 3
A. The causes behind the “island effect”.
B. The extinction risk faced by island species.
C. The importance of animal adaptation.
D. The relationship between the small and large species.
11. What risk do plus-sized and tiny-sized island creatures face
A. Extinction caused by humans on islands.
B. Limited availability of resources on islands.
C. Habitat destruction due to natural disasters.
D. Increased competition among different island species.
D
Compared with doctors who wore typical surgical(外科的)masks, doctors with clear masks found that patients gave them higher marks for empathy(同情)and explaining things clearly.
The study was led by author Dr Ian Kratzke, a surgery doctor at UNC-Chapel Hill. He came across some unusual face masks made with transparent(透明的)plastic. This allows others to see the wearer’s mouth—most of their face, in fact. The masks are equal to traditional surgical masks and were cleared for use by the Food and Drug Administration in April.
To test the masks, Kratzke and his colleagues set up an experiment. They asked 15 surgeons(外科医生)to wear either a clear mask or a standard surgical mask when seeing patients they’d never met before.
After the clinic visit was over, a researcher interviewed the patients about their experience. In all, the study team spoke with 100 patients who’d seen surgeons wearing clear masks and 100 patients who’d seen surgeons wearing traditional masks.
Patients in both groups ranked their surgeon’s ability to listen, answer questions, show respect and spend time with them. The advantages of the clear masks became obvious when patients evaluated(评估)the clearness of the surgeons’ explanations(95% for the clear masks vs 78% for the traditional masks), their knowledge of the patient’s history(100% vs 78%), their level of trust in the surgeon’s decisions(94% vs 72%), and their overall impression of the masks(100% vs 72%). In short, more patients seemed to feel they understood their surgeon better when they wore clear masks instead of traditional ones that hid their faces.
While clear masks were an exciting success with patients, the surgeons who wore them had a more mixed response. Eight of 15 surgeons, or 53%, said they were unlikely to choose the clear mask over their standard covered mask.
12. What advantage do clear masks have over traditional masks
A. They look more fashionable B. They are comfortable to wear.
C. They make wearers look cool. D. They make wearers understood better.
13. What’s the purpose of Kratzke’s experiment
A. To gather some new surgeons and patients.
B. To rank doctors’ ability to answer questions.
C. To compare the effect of clear and traditional masks.
D. To test if clear masks can be used widely in the hospitals.
14. What can we learn about clear masks from the text
A. They are more useful in daily surgical operations.
B. They are more expensive than typical masks.
C. They will take the place of traditional surgical masks.
D They can make patients believe in surgeons more.
15. What’s the 15 surgeons’ opinion about clear masks
A. They are fond of clear masks. B. They have mixed attitude to clear masks.
C. They are satisfied with the use of clear masks. D. They hold supportive opinion about clear masks.

People in Victoria have often been admired as they enjoy the year-round good climate of Canada’s “banana belt”. So when the unusual snowstorm struck the area this December, Victorians weren’t prepared.
Before Christmas holiday was over, Victorians wished they would never see snow again! However, between December 21st and 29th, so much snow fell. The little city that seldom sees snow was covered by snow that was over I meter deep.
I called my 87-year-old mother, who lived in a downtown nursing home. She was in poor health, but her mind was active and unaffected. “Mum,” I said, “we’re completely snowed in. It may be a few days before I can get out to see you.”
I was worried. My mother had caught a bad cold. And because of the storm, drugs were not being delivered.
On the morning of December 31st, the phone rang. It was Mother’s nurse in charge. “The bad cold has seriously influenced your mother’s lungs,” she said. “She’s quite in low spirits, and she’s extremely eager to see you. Your coming may raise her spirits and increase her body’s ability to fight against the disease. Is there any way you can get here ”
I felt hopeless because I knew there was no way I could get there. Like thousands of others in the city, we were trapped.
Friends suggested I turn to C-FAX, one of the local radio stations. Since the heavy snowstorm struck Victoria, C-FAX had canceled its regular programming and was now a communication center for news updates, volunteer coordination (协调) and health and safety tips. In fact, it had become Victoria’s lifeline.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I picked up my phone and asked anxiously, “Can you help me ”

I picked up my phone and asked anxiously, “Can you help me ” I was asked patiently what had happened. After I explained the situation, the operator said they would do their best to help me and asked me to wait for further information from them. Though I did not feel much hope, I still looked forward to receiving their good news. About an hour later, the phone finally rang. The operator told me that a truck carrying medicine was going downtown, and I could take this bus there.
