Jia Yongting lives in Changsha, Hunan. Recently, she once again received a box full of fruit from Laizhou, Shandong. It was sent by Sun Hongzheng, an 80-year-old farmer.
In 2018, when Jia saw him at a Beijing subway station, Sun was holding an old “dumb phone” and asking for directions. Jia told him the way and asked if he had a place to stay. Sun said he didn’t. As one of the oldest traditional opera forms in China, Kunqu Opera was born in the region of Kunshan in today’s Suzhou, Jiangsu province. It has a most important influence on all the more recent forms of opera in China, for example, Peking Opera.
With songs in the Suzhou dialect (方言) , beautiful body movements, Kungfu and dance, Kunqu Opera uses an endless variety of gestures to express certain feelings. One of the best-known and most-performed pieces of Kunqu Opera is The Peony Pavilion, which was written by Ming Dynasty (1368-1644) play writer Tang Xianzu, who is often compared to William Shakespeare.
Kunqu Opera had once faced a competition from mass (大众) culture and a lack of interest among young people, with actors of earlier generation retiring (退休) , audiences getting old and fewer young people willing to learn and enjoy the old art.
In 2003, Kunqu Opera had a sudden increase of the audience and 70% of them were young people. The youth version (版本) of The Peony Pavilion is considered a major contributor to the development and popularity of the art form. Till now, the youth version has been seen by a worldwide audience of about 800,000. And this year, it will be staged at Beijing Tianqiao Per-forming Arts Centre.

How is it going I’m writing to share my experience of labor practice at last weekend. The labor practices included picking up litter and sorting it, cleaning up the paths, and watering the plants. These simple but meaningful tasks allowed me to contribute to creating a better environment for the community.
It was more than just physical labor, but more importantly, it made me understand the important role that each individual plays in maintaining and improving our surroundings.
