Life is like a roller coaster, and every point has ups and downs. People plan something, but
luck and sometimes misfortunes lead them toward a different destination. However, passionate
individuals are not scared of such uncertainties. They set goals, welcome challenges, overcome
obstacles, and eventually achieve what satisfies them.
Those who stay committed to their broad goals and find satisfaction even in unplanned
circumstances are truly victorious. One true example of such people comes from a woman
passionate about spreading happiness and helping others. Nicole Thornes is a mother, a former
police officer, and now serving society as a death doula (陪护师).
Nicole joined the police academy intending to be helpful to society. She believed that a police
officer has the opportunity to remove crime, bring justice, and create a better society for everyone.
Although she became a mother during her studies and her responsibilities were increased due to
children, she didn't give up on her passion. Nicole could have called off her studies, but her passion
for serving society didn't let her step down. With great efforts, she finally became a police officer
and gave her contributions to law enforcement and the betterment of society. She was not only a
police officer making full commitment to the society but also a mother who played her
responsibilities in the best way possible.
Everything went according to her plans, but uncertainty called off her journey as a police
officer. Nicole suffered from an injury in a mission that ended her career in the police force. But her
dreams and passion did not let her stop. She became a death doula to continue her dream. She chose

this field after her grandfather's death, when she couldn't bear the pain of losing him. Being a death

to spread boom in people's lives and help them overcome all the obstacles she faced throughout her
life.

Alongside her impressive musical career, Leona Lewis is also the owner of a vegan (素食主义
的) coffee shop, Coffee And Plants. She has great enthusiasm for the coffee shop and reveals the
drink flavors that they’ve been working on lately. “We’ve just rolled out our new pumpkin drink at
the coffee shop. It’s called Pumpkin Pie, and it’s really good! We use all real pumpkin puree, not
flavored syrup.”
Coffee And Plants is a real passion project for Lewis, being fully plant-based. She has a long
history of animal activism, starting with going vegetarian (素食者) at the age of 12 after going on
shopping trips with her mum and seeing protesters with animal testing signs. “I was so upset, I said,
‘Mum, I have to help the animals’,” she says. “That became my mission as a kid, and it’s fed into
every aspect of my life.”
Her animal activism grew alongside her fame: in 2011 she supported a campaign to ban the use
of wild animals in circuses, and in 2013 she released a cruelty-free makeup line with The Body
Shop. When it came to opening a coffee shop, making it plant-based was apparent.
“I wanted it to be plant-based because I’m plant-based,” she says. “I would often go into coffee
shops and see milk cartons piled up high and think how many cows are being milked for this The
dairy industry and mass farming—it’s so cruel and harms the environment too.”
Environmental awareness is also at the heart of Coffee And Plants, with all cups being
recyclable. But ultimately, Lewis is hoping for a more widespread mindset shift. “What we really
try and get people to do is actually bring in their own bottles to refill, or we encourage them to sit in
and have a coffee in a cup instead,” she explains. “We need a mindset shift where we start to think.
OK, we shouldn’t really be using stuff that just goes in the bin.”

Fabien Cousteau is the grandson of Jacques Cousteau, an ocean scientist who brought the wonders of the sea to the attention of people around the world. Jacques Cousteau helped invent the
aqualung (水肺), now used by divers everywhere. Fabien Cousteau has followed a similar path,
exploring the ocean as a scientist and working to protect it.
The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet. NOAA says we have created maps of less than
20% of the world’s seafloors, and only 5% have been explored. Space seem to have gotten much
more attention, even though it’s farther away. The International Space Station (ISS) has been
around for more than 20 years, and more people have gone to the moon than have gone to the
deepest point in the ocean.
“The ocean is our life support system. It is the very reason why we exist in the first place,”
Fabien says. However, though the ocean is all around us, studying it is a challenge. Divers are
limited in how far they can go down and how long they can stay below. Returning to the surface can
be dangerous. Fabien has announced a plan to build a large research station under the ocean named
Proteus, which is designed to deal with many of those problems. The power for the station is
expected to come from solar energy and the movement of the ocean. Fabien says that the research
base won’t just be used to study and help protect the sea, but also to research new ways of creating
energy, and perhaps even searching for new medicines. Proteus is also expected to have the first
underwater greenhouse in the world, so that the lab will be able to grow some of its own food.
Like the ISS, Proteus is designed so that it can grow in the future, as scientists decide to add
new sections or equipment to the station. Fabien hopes to have the lab completed and ready to use
in the near future.
32. What do we know about Fabien Cousteau
A. He built an undersea laboratory. B. He helped invent the aqualung.
C. He’s doing what Jacques once did. D. He took part in the work in the ISS.
33. Why does the author mention the statistics in paragraph 2
A. To advise people to protect oceans.
B. To tell why oceans need exploring.
C. To show the world’s oceans are vast.
D. To prove oceans and space are equally vital.
5
34. Which of the following can beat describe Proteus
A. Environment-friendly. B. Water-saving.
C. Expensive. D. Risky.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Fabien’s Ocean Research Achievements
B. Proteus: the Research Lab Growing Gradually
C. Proteus: the Plan for Underwater Version of ISS
D. Fabien’s Dream About Promoting His Station

空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When you are looking for a new job, you’ll probably get a lot of advice from the Internet and
well-meaning friends. 36 Some of it may even hurt your chances. We’ve clarified a few of the
most common misbeliefs about job hunting so you can find your new position quickly without
lowering your standards.
37 Having a college degree shows that you put in hard work and effort, but it doesn’t
lock you into one specific career. If you take a completely different career path, consider getting
experience in your new field of choice with an internship (实习期).
You don’t need to be perfect to apply. If you meet some of the requirements that the job asks
for, take a chance. It’s pretty rare for a company to find someone who meets all the requirements.
Of course, there are some things that companies won’t give in to, like experience or skills. 38
Temporary jobs don’t necessarily mean dead-end future. 39 Usually, companies are
cautious about hiring new people, so they use temporary jobs to test the water first. If you come
across a suitable temporary job, consider applying to get your foot in the door.
Your personality is no less important than your qualification. You may have gone to a top
school and have years of experience. 40 Do your best to make a good impression by being
polite and kind during your interview.
A. However, it never hurts to try.
B. Some may turn into long-term or full-time work. C. Your college degree determines your career path.
D. You don’t have to work in the field your degree is in.
E. While the advice can sometimes be helpful, a lot of it is contradictory.
F. Therefore, they will save companies the trouble of training new employees.
G. But, if your personality doesn’t match the company culture, you won’t be employed.

mindset shift where we start to think, OK, we shouldn’t really be using stuff that just goes in the
bin.’(环保意识也是咖啡和植物的核心,所有的杯子都是可回收的。但最终,Lewis 希望更广
泛的心态转变。她解释说:‘我们真正试图让人们做的是,把自己的瓶子带进来重新装满,或

to the rise of China’s international influence, speaking Chinese fluently has become a highly
valued professional skill. Furthermore, learning Chinese helps open a unique window into one of
the world’s richest and most ancient civilizations.
I hope you can take my suggestion into serious consideration. Looking forward to your
