Good evening and welcome to this week’s episode of The Natural World. I’m Rebecca, and tonight we’ll be talking about water. About 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water, but 97% of it is salt water, which is not drinkable. Only about 3% of the water on Earth is fresh water, and most of that is locked up in ice. So, only about half a percent of Earth’s water is usable for drinking. Clean and safe drinking water is hard to find in many places.

Water is essential because most of the human body is made of water — around 60% in an average adult. Some parts of the body contain even more, like the brain, which is about 75% water. While humans can survive for weeks without food, we can only live a few days without water. We need around 2 to 3 litres of water per day, and athletes usually need more. In hot weather, people also require more water.
