“No” is a simple word, but it can be so hard to say. When a friend asks for help, many people will say “yes” because they hate to let others down and saying no makes them feel uncomfortable.
According to an article, people will even agree to unethical (不道德的) requirements rather than risk the discomfort of saying no. In a recent study, researchers found 25 college students and had them ask 108 strangers to destroy a library book by writing a word in ink on one of the pages. While many of the strangers pointed out it was the wrong thing to do, or asked the students to take responsibility for any bad effect, half of the strangers agreed to spoil back page of the book — much more than the average of 29 percent that the students predicted (预测).
Some people think that saying no will change the way the other person views us. If you are considered as a helpful person, it is even harder to say no because you don’t want to hurt that good reputation (名声). And some people think every “no” is a missed chance to make a difference and build a relationship.
Choosing to say no wisely is very necessary. Saying no is a suggestion and a lot of times it does hurt feelings. But even so, most people won’t take our no as badly as we think they will.
Our own work should be thought about first, so saying no helps us protect our own priorities, saying no can also help reduce pressure. To have your own values, sometimes you have to say no to people with whom you don’t agree.
( ) 49. The result of the research showed that ______.
A. it's a risk for students to say no
B. about 100 people spoiled back page of the book
C. some people don’t say no even facing unethical requirements
D. the students' prediction is similar to the result of the research
( ) 50. In the research, how many strangers refuse to spoil the cover of the book
A. 25. B. 108. C. 54. D. 29.
( ) 51.What does the underlined word “priorities” mean in the passage
A. the values that you have B. the rights that belong to us
C. the feelings without pressure
D. the things should be done before others
( ) 52.What might be the best title of the passage
A. Saying no wisely B. Always saying no
C. Why people don’t say no D. Saying no is missing chances

I used to think that life in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, was filled with never-changing styles. I hated that everyone seemed to know everything about everyone else. Everyone seemed to enjoy talking about other people and their lives. I also didn’t like the fact that people seemed very close–minded. I felt trapped. I felt like I was missing. It seemed to me that city life would be the opposite.
Then I took my first trip to New York City. I couldn’t wait to experience the city. However, when I arrived in the Big Apple, it wasn’t at all what I had imagined. I knew it was home to thousands of people, but I hadn’t had the least expectation to see so many people on the street at one time. All the streets were filled with people. I also felt a little surprised to see that everyone was in a hurry and everything moved at such a fast pace (步伐). When I took the underground for the first time, I said hello to the middle-aged woman next to me. She looked at me with dislike and didn’t say a word.
After just one day, I realized how important my small town to me. Now I miss the familiar faces I see every day. I like the feeling of safety and belonging my town offers. Jim Thorpe gives me a sense of community and togetherness that the city doesn’t provide. I realized just how much a simple hello does for a stranger --- it really can make your day a little better.
My big trip showed me that my small town really has its own values in me that I didn’t even know I had. I never would have known what a big place my town holds in my heart if I had not taken that trip to New York City.
( ) 53. How did the writer feel about life in Jim Thorpe at first
A. People there cared little about others.
B. People there liked to accept new things.
C. Living there was a great disadvantage.
D. There were many chances of career development.
( ) 54. What surprised the writer most in New York City
A. The gestures (手势) of greeting. B. The modern transport.
C. the modern life D. The crowded streets.
( ) 55. What made the writer change his/her attitudes (态度) to his/her hometown
A. Travelling to New York City. B. The familiar faces in Jim Thorpe.
C. Greeting the middle-aged woman.
D. Everybody likes talking about other people.
( ) 56. What would be the best title for the passage
A. Love of my small town
B. Differences between big cities and small towns
C. A sense of community D. A pleasant trip to New York City
D
I was raised in a house where my sisters and I weren’t trusted by our mother to manage our own appearance. As a result, there were rules, and fashion was largely ignored (忽视).
A few years ago, I was home for a visit when my mom, now in her early 70s, called me into her bedroom. We were about ready to leave for dinner. “I don’t know what to wear,” she complained from her seat. “You girls always look so good.”
I paused in the doorway and looked at her, wondering if I’d misheard. “What do you mean ” I asked her. “You know what to wear.”
“No,” she answered. “I don’t. Can you pick something ”
I was so surprised. This was the same woman who, in 1989, told me I wasn’t allowed to leave the house wearing a pair of ripped jeans; the same woman who, in high school, called my younger sister while she was out at a party to ask if her hair was up. “You look better with it down,” she told the girl, before she could answer.
I realized, suddenly, that my mother --- always so strong --- not only wanted my opinion, but needed it. I pulled a pair of blue jeans from the closet and a light blue sweater from her drawer.
“Wear these with your black shoes,” I told her. She did as I suggested. My mother certainly doesn’t need anyone to take care of her. In fact, she still cares for my grandmother who lives with her. But with that one question, my mother and I started the role change that happens with all parents and all children, from care giver to receiver.
Now, if I’m visiting or we’re together, it’s rare for her to wear anything without checking with me first. But sometimes, it seems that she asks me just to be able to disagree with my answer and pick out something on her own. And when she does, I just tell her what I think of the way she looks. Sometimes it’s “great”. And sometimes it’s “awful”.
( ) 57. When the writer was young, she ______.
A. could never know what to wear
B. was not allowed to go to parties at night
C. always wore fashionable clothes and hairstyles
D. had to pick her clothes according to her mother’s rules
( ) 58. The first time the writer’s mother asked her for advice on clothes, she ______.
A. was unhappy to do something for her mother
B. began to realize her mother needed her care
C. had no idea what was suitable for her mother
D. was worried that her mother was too old to live alone
( )59. When the writer gives her opinion about clothes, her mother ______.
A. always accepts her advice happily
B. is still uncertain about what to wear
C. is often surprised by what the writer says
D. sometimes chooses to follow her own ideas
( ) 60. The writer wrote this article mainly to ______.
A. show what it is like to have a strict mother
B. remind readers to visit their parents often
C. show her mother’s great influence on her
D. show how the role of parents and their children can change

A city without cars would be very strange, right But Venice is such a city.
Venice is in the northeast of Italy. It wasn't built on land, like Beijing or Shanghai, but on more than 110 islands. Seawater is everywhere around the city.
Even so, travel isn’t difficult. The waterways have always been the best way to get around. There are 117 waterways and more than 400 bridges that can guide you where you want to go. People in Venice move from place to place by boat. They like to enjoy the scenery(风光) and cool summer nights while taking boat trips. They can talk to other people as they go along.
Venice grew out of small islands in saltwater lakes when some Italians escaped from a war over 1,500 years ago, and built homes there.
Water makes the city special, but it is also a big problem. Sometimes tourists will have such strange experiences. One moment they walk across the Rialto Bridge, and there’s nothing special. But when they come back to the bridge an hour later, it’s underwater and everyone is wearing rain shoes.
Once, people used too much underground water. This made the city get lower little by little. Now the city has gone down by 23 centimeters. Another problem is the rising seawater. The temperature has risen over the years. This has made the ice of the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) melt( 融化).
Every year, high waters hit the city in autumn and winter. When a lot of water comes, more than half of the city is underwater.
Scientists are trying different ways to stop the city from getting even lower. The Italian government has asked some of Italy’s biggest companies to build the MOST project, which was planned to be build under the seawater to stop the rising water. Anyway, this project is helping solve the problem.
