I used to be the quietest kid in class. Speaking felt like holding broken glass in my mouth. When teachers said my name wrong some kids laughed loudly. Their voices seemed to fill every corner of the school. So I always stayed silent, walking through the school alone.

Bronze drum (铜鼓) is a traditional musical instrument used mainly by the Zhuang people in Guangxi. Its history can date back thousands of years. Hechi is called the “hometown of the bronze drums”. Hechi owns over 1,200 bronze drums recorded in the world. Many people think that this city is the center of traditional bronze drums.
The bronze drums are considered to sweep away bad things and bring good luck. So they are still popular in Guangxi and are often used in festivals and community activities. In recent years, the bronze drums of Hechi have taken on a new look on the stage of the Sanyuesan Festival, which is celebrated on the third day of the third month. It is a public holiday of Zhuang nationality in Guangxi. On that day, performers stand in front of more than 20 bronze drums, beating them with small drumsticks (鼓棒).
