With a tender heart, I spotted the gloves he cherished, lost and alone on the bench. As I handed them back, his eyes, a window to his soul, sparkled with surprise and gratitude."Thank you," he whispered, his voice quivering slightly, as he gently squeezed my hand—a silent testament to the joy of giving. At that moment, I felt the warmth of compassion, understanding that small gestures have immense impact.
My heart swelled with gratitude as the young man gently guided my lost father to our doorstep. His kind gesture, a beacon of hope in the twilight, spoke volumes of his character. "I'm in your debt," I uttered, my voice thick with emotion, as I clasped his hand firmly. The sincerity in his eyes and the gentle smile on his face reassured me of the humanity's inherent goodness. In that moment, I realized the depth of kindness in strangers, a reminder that compassion knows no bounds.

As I surveyed the neighbor's garden, ravaged by the storm, a wave of empathy surged within me. We rallied with determination, our hands working diligently to restore the once vibrant haven. "We're in this together," I declared, my voice steady, reflecting our collective spirit. The neighbors' weary faces brightened with each replanted flower, their smiles a testament to our shared effort. The experience taught us the power of unity and the resilience of nature and community.
Feeling like a fish out of water in the new school, I was greeted by a classmate's warm smile, a lifebuoy in the overwhelming sea of faces. "Welcome, let me show you around," she said, with her voice as a soothing melody amidst the chaos. Her friendly guidance steered me through the corridors, her patient explanations like a map through the unfamiliar territory. I watched her kind eyes, a mirror reflecting the spirit of community. It dawned on me that every new beginning is a chance to find connections and kindness in unexpected places.

As the winter storm raged, I watched the stranded tourists with a heavy heart, their shivering forms a stark contrast to the cozy warmth of my home. Driven by compassion, I gathered loaves of bread and warm clothes, and offered them with a gentle, "Please, take these to ward off the chill."Their eyes, initially dulled by the cold, brightened with surprise and gratitude. The simple act of sharing taught me the true meaning of empathy and the power of small gestures to bring comfort in the face of adversity.
The cleaner's heart overflowed with integrity as she found the glinting ring, knowing its worth yet choosing to return it. "This belongs to someone precious," she thought, handing it back with a humble smile. The lady's eyes glistened with tears of gratitude as she clasped the cleaner's hand, her "Thank you" echoing with sincerity. The act reaffirmed the belief in the purity of kindness, a reminder that honesty is the most valuable treasure one can possess.

I met Gunter on a cold, wet and unforgettable evening in September. I had planned to fly to Vienna and take a bus to Prague for a conference. Due to a big storm, my flight had been delayed by an hour and a half. I touched down in Vienna just 30 minutes before the departure of the last bus to Prague. The moment I got off the plane, I ran like crazy through the airport building and jumped into the first taxi on the rank without a second thought.
That was when I met Gunter. I told him where I was going, but he said he hadn't heard of the bus station. I thought my pronunciation was the problem, so I explained again more slowly, but he still looked confused. When I was about to give up, Gunter fished out his little phone and rang up a friend. After a heated discussion that lasted for what seemed like a century, Gunter put his phone down and started the car.
Finally, with just two minutes to spare we rolled into the bus station. Thankfully, there was a long queue (队列) still waiting to board the bus. Gunter parked the taxi behind the bus, turned around, and looked at me with a big smile on his face. "We made it," he said.
Just then I realised that I had zero cash in my wallet. I flashed him an apologetic smile as I pulled out my Portuguese bankcard. He tried it several times, but the card machine just did not play along. A feeling of helplessness washed over me as I saw the bus queue thinning out.
At this moment, Gunter pointed towards the waiting hall of the bus station. There, at the entrance, was a cash machine. I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the machine, and popped my card in, only to read the message: "Out of order. Sorry."

I ran back to Gunter and told him the bad news. He looked at me in disbelief, asking me what to do. Flashing him another apologetic smile, I begged him for a delayed payment. “If I miss this last bus to Prague, I’ll be late for the conference which is so important that I can’t afford to miss it!” I explained. “May I have your phone number I will call you and return the money I owe you. I promise I will keep my word or you keep my watch!” I added, handing him my watch as well as my business card. Gunter accepted my business card but rejected my watch. He wrote down his phone number and gave it to me. “Just keep your promise, Sir.” A feeling of gratitude washed over me as I heard his words. Giving him a firm handshake, I jumped out of the car, made a mad run for the bus, and jumped onto it just before its departure.
Four days later, when I was back in Vienna, I called Gunter as promised. He picked me up at the bus station where he had dropped me off four days before. Beaming a warm smile at him, I gave him a big hug the moment I saw him. We chatted happily on the way to the airport. I told him that thanks to his generosity and timely help, everything had gone smoothly. When he stopped his taxi outside the airport, I paid him for the “double car ride”, back and forth from the airport to the bus station, together with a generous tip that he turned down. I also gave him an attractive souvenir I had bought at Prague, which he accepted with delight. We became good friends and kept in touch with each other regularly. I felt blessed to have such a warm-hearted friend like Gunter.

Rushing into the supermarket that fall afternoon, I did not know I would get to be a part of something beautiful. In all honesty, I can’t even remember why I was in this grocery store. I never shopped here. It was out of my way and out of the circle that I lived my life within. But it was meant for me to be there at this particular time.
After selecting my items, I proceeded to the checkout line. I noticed a young woman in the line in front of me. Her clothes were worn, and she looked so tired. She had a toddler (学步的儿童) who could not have been more than three and a newborn baby who was just a few weeks old. The toddler was running and jumping around just like toddlers do. The baby was crying. My heart went out to her. I had been in her shoes with my own two sons.
She managed to get her groceries on the moving belt despite all the chaos of her kids, and the clerk started checking out her items. As I stood behind her, I noticed that she was losing patience with her kids but didn’t know what to do. She was trying to balance both tasks without causing a huge disturbance. I began to whisper a prayer of peace and strength over this woman. The line behind me continued to snake its way into another passage. The pressure was growing.
As I watched her, I remembered the time when I had been in a grocery store with a toddler who was running around and a screaming baby. I remembered the mean, old man behind me and the inappropriate comment he made on me as I checked out. That memory took me away from the checkout line for a moment. When I came back to the present, I realized that the young woman was looking at a few items and trying to decide what she needed to put back.

The people in line behind me were getting impatient. The dancing toddler and screaming baby just added to the stress of her situation. I touched her on the arm and asked her a simple question, “Honey, do you need these items for your children ” “Yes, ma’am, but I don’t have enough cash for them.” My heart broke for this young woman. “Wrap up those groceries for her,” I said to the clerk. The clerk couldn’t believe it. “Wrap up the rest of her groceries. I will pay for them. She needs them for her children,” I told the clerk again.
I was about to pay for the woman, but the man behind offered to share the cost. He said what I had just done for this young woman had touched him and inspired him to do so. The woman was seriously crying by this point and said, “I don’t know how to repay you two.” I also said to her, “You can pay us back by paying it forward.” I do hope that the young woman does remember what it’s like when she sees a struggling man or another stranger in trouble, and will pay it forward. Kindness can be given and received everywhere — even in the checkout line!

Sport is a thrilling event which challenges every human beyond their limits. It teaches people to play by the rules and to know what it feels like to win and lose. But sometimes it teaches more. One summer day when the heat was at its maximum, the sun hung high in the sky, beating down on a small town in Texas and a local high school. It was the day of the annual track and field competition, where athletes from neighboring schools gathered together to test their abilities against each other and showcase their hard-earned skills in the hope of being recognized as the best ones.
At 4 P. M, the 400-meter race was about to begin. The air was thick with tension and excitement as the participants warmed up, their muscles glistening (闪亮) with sweat under the hot sun. Among them was Sarah, a freshman with a determined look beyond her years. She stood at the starting line, her eyes fixed on the way forward, her heart beating violently in her chest. Beside her, experienced runners from other schools, with an air of pride, prepared to go all out.
The match began, and they shot forward like arrows. Aware that it’s a battle against time, Sarah ran forward with all her might. But her legs grew heavier as she pushed against the heat. Halfway into the race, she tripped over a small stone on the track and hit the ground with a loud thud (沉闷声). Screams of shock echoed around the lane as she lay sprawled (躺得四仰八叉) on the ground.
But what happened next definitely created a memory. Sensing something unusual, the other runners slowed, turning around to offer a hand. Sarah looked up, tears welling up in her eyes, and saw not competitors but concerned faces. They had chosen to pause their race and extend a helping hand. They helped her to her feet, and with a nod of respect, they all lined up again at the starting line, waiting for the signal to restart.

The second start led to a different kind of race. This time, the spirit of unity and support filled the air. As the gun went off again, the runners didn’t just focus on winning for themselves. They ran side by side, encouraging each other with shouts of “Come on!” Sarah, with newfound courage, kept up with the group. Her face was set with determination, and she ran as hard as she could. Along the track, the other runners would glance at her, making sure she was okay. When they neared the finish line, they crossed it together, hands linked. The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, moved by this display of sportsmanship.
After the award ceremony, everyone left with a renewed understanding of sportsmanship. The athletes realized that in sports, it wasn’t just about the medals or the victory. It was about helping others, showing respect, and building a community. Sarah, especially, was deeply touched. She had entered the race hoping to prove herself, but she had gained so much more. The experience taught her that true strength lies not only in physical ability but also in the kindness and support of others. From that day on, whenever she thought of that race, she would remember the power of sportsmanship that had united them all.

I grew up in a small town and in a time, not so long ago, when children could come home for lunch and find their mothers waiting.
At the time, I did not consider this a luxury, although today, it certainly would be. My mother was a nurse. Though she didn’t talk much about her work in the hospital, I could tell she had her own plans and dreams in her career. She always wore a sweet smile and spoke gently when she was on the phone with her patients. But as a child, I took it for granted that mothers were the sandwich-makers, the finger-painting appreciators, the homework monitors, and housework doers in a child’s life. I never gave much thought to the fact that this ambitious, intelligent woman would spend almost every lunch hour throughout those years with me. For this, I am forever grateful.
One lunchtime in particular will stay with me forever. I was in the third grade and two weeks earlier had been picked to be the princess in the spring play. Every lunch hour, my mother rehearsed (排练) my lines with me. But no matter how easily I delivered them at home, as soon as I stepped onstage, every word disappeared from my head.
Finally, my teacher kindly asked me to switch to a narrator’s part in the play. I didn’t tell my mother that noon what had happened. But she seemed to sense my unease because she asked if I wanted to walk in the yard after lunch.
It was a lovely spring day and the grass was becoming thick under our feet. Our rose vine on the fence was turning green. Throughout the grass, we could see yellow dandelions (蒲公英) in bunches, as if a painter had touched our landscape with drops of gold.

“I think I’m going to dig up all these weeds,” she said, pulling a dandelion up by its roots. I protested, “But they’re so pretty! Look at how bright and golden they are.” She paused, holding the dandelion gently in her hand, and smiled. “You’re right,” she said. “They are beautiful in their own way. Just like people — everyone has their own unique charm, even if they don’t fit into what others expect.” She looked at me intently, her eyes filled with understanding and concern. “I can see something’s been bothering you,” she added softly.
I felt at once surprised and relieved that she had guessed my pain. I hesitated for a moment, and then confessed about losing the princess role in the play. She listened quietly. When I finished in sadness, she said, “Sometimes, the roles we don’t expect turn out to be the most meaningful. Being the narrator might not feel glamorous, but it’s just also important. You have a chance to tell the story in your own way.” Her words comforted me, and I realized she was right. Her wisdom and unconditional support became my guiding light, and I carried that lesson with me long after the play ended.

It dawned on me that every new beginning is a chance to find connections and kindness in unexpected places.
As the winter storm raged, I watched the stranded tourists with a heavy heart, their shivering forms a stark contrast to the cozy warmth of my home. Driven by compassion, I gathered loaves of bread and warm clothes, and offered them with a gentle, "Please, take these to ward off the chill." Their eyes, initially dulled by the cold, brightened with surprise and gratitude.
