I still remember when I saw The Shining for the first time, I used to pull away from horror movies but something about The Shining pulled me in like a magnet(磁石), and that is when I knew that I had fallen in love with horror fiction and that was because of Stephen King. King is one of the best novelists out there. He was New York Time’ s Best Selling Author and got numerous awards.
There can be no doubt that Stephen King, one of the most popular writers of all time has found success in many aspects but it wasn’t always like this. When he was 2 years old, his father told his mom that he was going out to get cigarettes but in fact, he never came back. He had abandoned his family.
This left his mother Ruth to care for Stephen and his older brother David on her own. Ruth was forced to move often, and she had to rely on relatives most of the time. One day Stephen went out to play with friends and when he came back he wasn’t even able to speak a single word. it seemed he was traumatized but he still got the courage to continue forward. Although Stephen King didn’t see his childhood as something extraordinary or special, he did say that he was always fascinated by scary things.
People used to acknowledge the King family by their love of literature, in fact whenever Stephen’s mom used to go out she didn’t hire a babysitter, the kids used to read novels to each other so they won’t get bored. Stephen King’s love of stories was encouraged from a very young age and he carried that tradition with his own children along with his wife Tabitha.
In 1973, Stephen King published his first novel “Carrie”. The rest followed from after that as he published many amazing books like The Shining, IT, Firestarter, and Cujo. All of these books became classics and got their own movie and television show adaptations.
24. Why did the author mention his own experience in the first paragraph
A. To attract readers’ interest. B. To introduce the topic of the passage.
C. To add some background information. D. To stress Stephen King’s achievement.
25. Which of the following best explains “traumatized” underlined in paragraph 3
A. Confused. B. Shocked. C. Amazed. D. Impressed.
26. What contributes most to Stephen King’s habit of reading and writing
A. His serious health problem.
B. Reading tradition of his family.
C. The stress from the death of his friend.
D. His tragedy and horrors from the very beginning.
27. What might be the best title for the text
A. Stephen King’s Inspirational Life
B. Stephen King: My Favourite Writer
C. Great Achievements of Stephen King
D. The Shining: a Magnet from Stephen King

Browsing(浏览) videos on TikTok or YouTube can be a hit-and-miss affair. But researchers have found that switching to another video, or skipping forwards and backwards in the same one, actually makes people more bored.
Dr Katy Tam at the University of Toronto Scarborough, the lead author of the research, said boredom was closely linked to attention. “We feel bored when there’s a gap between how engaged we are and how engaged we want to be,” she said. “When people keep switching through videos, they become less engaged with the videos and they are looking for something more interesting. This can lead to increased feelings of boredom.”
The results appear to agree with other studies: as the team notes, previous research has suggested that while boredom relief is a driver for people to use social media or smartphones, the use of such technology appears to make the feeling worse.
Writing in the Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, Tam and colleagues report how they carried out seven experiments involving a total of more than 1,200 participants. The first, involving 140 participants, showed that people tended to switch between videos more when they rated the content more boring, while the second— an online survey involving 231 participants— suggested people thought having the option to skip through a video or switch to another would make viewing a video less boring.
However, the team’s following experiments suggest this is not the case. Data from a group of 166 undergraduates suggests participants felt more bored when allowed to skip about within a video than when they were not able to, while results from 159 undergraduates revealed they reported higher levels or boredom when given a collection of five-minute videos they could switch between, compared with a single 10-minute video.
“Our research shows that while people fast-forward or skip videos to avoid boredom, this behaviour can actually make them feel more bored,” she said. “Just as we pay for an immersive experience in a movie theatre, enjoyment often comes from immersing ourselves in videos rather than swiping through them.”
28. Why does keeping switching to another video make people feel bored
A. It lowers people’s attention with videos.
B. It reduces people`s dependence on videos.
C. It calls for higher demands for concentration.
D. It makes people less interested in smart phones.
29. What can we learn from the previous research
A. Turning to smartphones for relief made people more bored.
B. People switched between videos more when they were bored.
C. The more technology people used, the more curiosity they had.
D. Switching to another video frequently made people more interested.
30. How did Tam and his colleagues conduct the study
A. By analyzing causes. B. By building a model.
C. By listing some examples. D. By comparing some data.
31. What is the text mainly about
A. Enjoyment often comes from engagement.
B. The reason why people browse videos is boredom.
C. A research shows browsing videos makes people more bored.
D. We should avoid feelings of boredom when browsing videos.

We consider Black Friday as holy as Christmas or even Easter but it is so much more than that. Did you know that the first recorded Black Friday term was directed towards a financial crisis Yes, financial crises come and go but the events that unfolded in 1869 were just too much.
All of this started on Wall Street when two businessmen. Jay Gould and Jim Fisk bought all the nation’s gold to crash the market for their own personal gains. They wanted to drive the gold’s price to an all-time high and then sell the gold for unrealistic prices. On that Friday in September 1869, the plot was finally unveiled(揭露) and this sent the stock market into a free-fall. Everyone from Wall Street to the farmers became bankrupt(破产) . This then became the original Black Friday.
Let’s move to the retailers(零售商) now as Black Friday is directly related to the retailers. When the Wall Street crash happened, every retailer had to operate at a loss for an entire year. After Thanksgiving, Holiday shoppers were ready to rain down cash for discounted goods and that is what motivated the retailers to start Black Friday Sales. It is also said that retail companies all over the United States used to record their losses in black and profits in red thus it became Black Friday but this is a bit inaccurate according to history experts.
So we have talked about the origin of Black Friday but the term “Black Friday” was first used in the 1950s. It was obviously a Friday and the police complained about huge crowds of people showing up at the shops, it was just too much for them to handle. Police called it a “Black Friday” because no one could have expected it. After that date, this term was used to describe shopping.
Retailers were not happy with the term Black Friday at first, it used to give them negative feelings. These retailers had some meetings and wanted it to be called “Big Friday” but those efforts failed. In the end, the term Black Friday was retained.
32. What is the original meaning of Black Friday
A. An event of great economic loss.
B. A sharp decline of the gold price.
C. A celebration of Christmas or Easter.
D. A special day in memory of two businessmen.
33. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Customers would spend more money to buy the goods.
B. Retailers started Black Friday Sales to make up for sales losses.
C. History experts agreed with the definition from retail companies.
D. When the Wall Street crash happened, everyone had heavy losses.
34. Why does the author mention the police
A. To describe the shops crowed with people.
B. To inform us of the exact date of “Black Friday”.
C. To explain the reason why the police didn’t like it.
D. To show how the term “Black Friday” came into being.
35. What was the retailers’ attitude towards the term “Black Friday”
A. Excited. B. Critical. C. Appreciative. D. Indifferent.
