Hailey Ford is a 9-year-old girl from Washington. She has grown food for the homeless for four years. Now she is hard at work building 11 small homes for the homeless.
She got the idea after meeting a homeless man named Edward on the street while out shopping with her mother. They gave the man a sandwich, but Hailey got to thinking about how she could do more and continue providing (提供) food to the needy, so she set up Hailey’s Harvest, a garden with its own Facebook page, to grow vegetables.
“I said sure, thinking it would last a week. It’s been four years and she still gives vegetables to the homeless every week,” her mom, Miranda, said.
“It just doesn’t seem right that there are homeless people,” Hailey said to her mother. “I think everyone should have a place to live.” So She has been putting in weeks of work on the shelters (庇护所). Hailey can use tools by herself to build a small house. The house is safe and dry.
Hailey has received money for the homes, which will be put in the town’s permanent Tent City (永久帐篷城) and be open to the homeless later this year. “One window got put in today,” she wrote in one post. “I didn’t get as much done as I wanted today, but one wall is in and done.”

When I was a boy my mum used to say I would read the back of a medicine bottle if I didn’t have a book in my hand. It was true, and even now that reading habit has been with me, I always have at least one book being read, sometimes I might have two or three. And I’m talking about real books, books made out of paper, books that you can hold in your hand, to read, at the table, on the subway or my favorite place to read-in the bath.
But the number of people reading books is dropping. A recent survey tells us that Chinese people only read 4.77 printed books a year on average and in the US, 25 percent of the population say they didn’t read a book last year! So what’s stopping people from reading
The answer of course is the huge influence that technology has had on our life. Why read a book when you can watch a movie or TV play on your smart phones or iPads For younger people, books may not be as exciting as online games. With stories you have to work at it, closely follow the turns of the plot (情节). There are no shortcuts with a book. You have to turn page after page.
But you can still get lost in a book. We all have this thing called imagination. It’s much more powerful than any computer; in fact, it’s worth remembering that any online game was first written in words as a story by its writer. It’s all about his or her or their imagination.
So we need to read-if we do not read, it will be hard for us to improve our ability to think widely, to have an imagination. Reading is a process in which we need to compare and connect other things we have read and seen in the past. If you do not read, this will not only influence your study, but also your social life in the future.
So why not follow me from now on Run a hot bath, or find a comfortable chair and read a good book for a few hours-there are quite many, for free, in your local library.
26. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 1
A. The writer used to enjoy playing with a medicine bottle.
B. The writer has had the reading habit since his childhood.
C. The writer always has two or three books in his hand.
D. The writer often reads books at a table on the subway.
27. The number of people reading books is dropping because ______.
A. books are becoming less interesting
B. technology has greatly influenced our life
C. 25% of Americans don’t read books
D. there aren’t enough printed books to read
28. What does the word “shortcuts” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean in Chinese
A. 捷径 B. 理念 C. 缺点 D. 短文
29. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true
A. Reading can help to develop our imagination.
B. All online games were first written in words.
C. We need to think a lot while reading a book.
D. Younger people prefer books to online games.
30. In the last paragraph, the writer mainly suggests that we should ______.
A. run a hot bath to read books B. borrow books from the library

It's a common belief that over time, pet owners start to look like their animals. Now comes the terrifying news that cats look up to their owners as role models and copy their behaviour.
Next time you reach for your fridge, think twice. If your cat is watching, she will probably overeat as well.
In a new study from the University of Messina, it turns out that indoor cats who live closely to their owners “mirror” the lives of their caregivers. They sleep at the same time, eat at the same time, and can even become more or less social depending on the behaviour of their owners.
“Cats are clever animals with a long memory,” Jane Brunt, director of the Catalyst Council, told Discovery News. “They watch and learn from us, noting the patterns of our actions, knowing where their food is kept and what time to expect to be fed, how to open the cupboard door that's been improperly closed, and where their feeding and toileting areas are.” Because cats copy our habits, if you spend a lot of time raiding(搜刮)the fridge, your cat will return to its food bowl for that midnight snack, too. According to the study, this explains why “human and cat overweight rates often seem to match”.
There's no word if drinking green tea and making sure you go to yoga will benefit (使受益) your cat, but based on the study, it sounds like sticking to a healthy eating and sleeping habit is best for both of you.
There's a lot we can learn from our cats in return. “When they sit softly breathing , eyes half closed, the sense of peace and calm that comes over us is like a private less on in inner meditation(冥想),”Brunt said. They're probably pretty good at remaining calm.
So, according to science, though we think that cats are not close to us all these years, it turns out they are in fact learning from us and looking up to us. Scary, huh
31. What does the word “terrifying” in paragraph 1 probably mean
A. 可怕的 B. 高兴的 C. 伤心的 D. 无聊的
32. According to the passage, which of the following is WRONG
A. Cats can copy humans' behaviours. B. Cats are smart and have a long memory.
C. Green tea and yoga can benefit cats. D. Humans can learn from cats in some way.
33. What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. Humans' keeping searching the fridge. B. Humans' drinking green tea and going to yoga
C. Cats' copying humans' habit of looking for food. D. Cats' going to their owners for food.
34. What can we learn from our cats
A. To remain peaceful. B. To be able to copy.
C. To stay hungry. D. To look up to friends.
35. The best title for the passage could be “________”.
A. Your cat can bring you pleasure B. You are copying your cat

The duty (职责) of doctors is simple: go where the patients are. But in the past, it was not easy to achieve this because national borders (国界) got in the way. That’s why Doctors Without Borders was created.
Doctors Without Borders is also known by its French name, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF). It was born in December 1971. At the time, more than 300 volunteers made up the organization: doctors, nurses and other staff (工作人员), including 13 reporters. They said they felt strongly that medical needs of people were more important than national borders. Nothing should prevent them from receiving health care.
On December 10, 1999, Doctors Without Borders won the Nobel Peace Prize. At the awards ceremony (颁奖典礼), Dr. James Orbinski, the president of MSF at that time, called on more people to learn about MSF and care about people in need of medical care.” We are not sure that words can save lives, but we do know that silence can kill,” said Orbinski.
Now, MSF has 24 offices around the world. When a crisis (危机) breaks out in the world, Doctors Without Borders is usually there to help. This organization provides emergency care for victims of wars, natural disasters, diseases and many more. The group also trains local health workers and organizes many helpful programs.
