Johnson was born in 1926 in Jacksonville, Florida to a poor single mother who handed her baby off to be raised. He grew up poor and started to provide for his family at a young age. He got his first camera by selling magazine subscriptions door-to-door. “I just started taking pictures around the neighborhood and I got attracted,” he said.
Johnson was drafted into the U. S. Navy right out of high school. He was stationed in San Francisco, falling in love with the city. After he was discharged from the army, he wanted to develop his photography skills in college.
It was 1946, and new photographers were rushing to get into the program that famous nature photographer Ansel Adams had just launched at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Johnson wanted in, so he sent Adams a letter. However, there were no seats left. But a student dropped out later, making room for Johnson.
After living in Adams’ house for some time, Johnson eventually found a low-rent room in the city’s Fillmore District and started taking lots of photos. Many of these images appeared decades later in a documentary about the rise and fall of Fillmore as one of the country’s most lively neighborhoods of African Americans. “He would go to the clubs in the evenings to take incredible photographs of musicians,” said Christine Hult-Lewis, who studies Johnson’s collections. “He had very easy relationships with people in the barbershops and the folks in the churches and on the streets.”
“Growing up, most of the photographs I have seen of African Americans were just not very pleasant,” he said. “I said, ‘My photographs will have them photographed in a dignified manner.’”
Johnson never became a big name like his teacher Adams. By the 1980s, he’d stopped taking photos altogether. But interest in Johnson’s work has grown in recent years, as cities across the country struggle to tackle the negative impacts that urban redevelopment can have.
“The photographs tell life, life as it was then and life that cannot be copied or recreated today,” said Johnson’s wife, Jacqueline Sue. “It’s a marker of history.”
4. What can be known about Johnson from the first two paragraphs
A. His mother inspired him to take photos.
B. He didn’t have a carefree childhood life.
C. He enjoyed selling magazines very much.
D. His school performance was disappointing.
5. What was key to Johnson’s entry into Adams’ program
A. Johnson’s earliest application.
B. The school’s recommendation.
C. A student’s withdrawal from it.
D. Adams’ sympathy for Johnson.
6. What did Johnson mainly want to do through photography
A. Record the sufferings of poor people.
B. Promote the restoration of Fillmore District.
C. Maintain close relationships with celebrities.
D. Reveal the respectable side of African Americans.
7. Why has Johnson’s work become popular in recent years
A. It has brought life to traditional museums.
B. It might contribute to urban redevelopment.
C. It can speed up the country’s modernization.
D. It reflects negative impacts on modern cities.

Many industries require that humans and robots share a workspace, but repetitive and boring work can make people lose their focus and make mistakes. Most computer programs help robots react when a mistake happens. Those algorithms (算法) might focus either on improving efficiency or safety, but they haven’t considered a fact that the behavior of the people they’re working with doesn’t remain the same.
“There are a large number of accidents that are happening every day due to carelessness — most of them, unfortunately, from human errors,” said Mehdi Hosseinzadeh, assistant professor in Washington State University’s School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering. “Robots act as planned and follow the rules, but humans don’t always do so.”
A new algorithm may help by making robots more aware of human inattentiveness. In computerized simulations (模拟) of packaging and assembly lines where humans and robots work together, the algorithm developed to account for human carelessness improved safety by about a maximum of 80% and efficiency by about a maximum of 38% compared to existing methods.
“We defined carelessness, and the robot observed the behavior of the human and tried to understand it,” Hosseinzadeh said. “If we know which human is inattentive, we can do something to prevent some potential mistakes. Once the robot identifies careless behavior, it is programmed to change how it interacts with the human acting that way, working to diminish the chance that the person might cause a workplace error or hurt themselves. For instance, the robot might change the way it manages its tasks to avoid getting in the human’s way. The robot continuously updates the carelessness level and any changes that it observes.”
After conducting computerized simulations, the researchers are going to test their work in a laboratory with real robots and people and ultimately in field studies. They also want to quantify and account for other factors that affect workplace productivity, such as human sensibility or danger awareness.
8. What is the disadvantage of most algorithms programmed to robots
A. Ignoring humans’ changing behavior.
B. Allowing robots to respond to mistakes.
C. Focusing on their partners’ repetitive work.
D. Paying little attention to efficiency or safety.
9. Which of the following can replace the word “diminish” underlined in paragraph 4
A. Seize. B. Stabilize.
C. Estimate. D. Reduce.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about concerning the researchers
A. Their future plans.
B. Their recent achievements.
C. Their expectations of humans.
D. Their computerized simulations.
11. What is the best title for the text
A. Robots Are More Attentive than Humans at Work
B. A New Algorithm May Help to Ensure Robots’ Safety
C. Industries Require Humans and Robots Share a Workspace
D. Robots Are Programmed to Account for Human Carelessness
D
Even if your cat hasn’t gotten your tongue, it’s most likely getting your words. Without any particular reward, the animal — like human babies — appears to pick up basic human language skills by listening to us talk. Indeed, cats learn to associate images with words faster than babies do, according to a study.
“Cats have a long history with us — about 10,000 years at last count,” notes Brittany Florkiewicz, an evolutionary psychologist at Lyon College. “So it makes sense that they can learn these types of associations.”
Saho Takagi, a comparative cognitive scientist at Azabu University, and some of her former teammates gave 31 adult pet cats a type of word test designed for human babies. The scientists placed each cat in front of a laptop and showed them two 9-second animated cartoon images while broadcasting audio (音频) tracks of their caregivers saying a made-up word four times. The researchers played the nonsense word “keraru” while a blue-and-white unicorn appeared on the screen, or “parumo” while a red-faced cartoon Sun appeared. Next, the team gave the animals a short break and then ran the images on the screen four more times. There was a change: Half the images came with the “wrong” word audio — keraru for the Sun, and parumo for the unicorn.
“Visibly confused, the cats spent an average of 33% more time looking at the screen when hearing such mismatches — a sign they had learned to associate the original words with images,” Takagi says. “Some cats even stared at the screen with their eyes wide open during the ‘switched’ condition.”
Surprisingly, the vast majority of the cats learned each word-image association after only two 9-second lessons. By contrast, most 14-month-old human babies need four 15-second lessons.
Still, the results don’t necessarily mean human babies are slower to learn words than cats. Despite the cat test being modeled after the one designed for babies, there are still notable differences, such as the words and the speakers. Critically, cats appear to be learning these word associations without any reward — the same way babies learn languages.
12. What does Brittany Florkiewicz say about cats’ ability to learn the associations
A. It’s not unexpected. B. It makes little sense.
C. It’s beyond comprehension. D. It still needs to be proven.
13. What did Takagi’s team do to the cats in the test
A. They misled them with four more wrong words.
B. They had them listen to their caregivers’ voices.
C. They guided them to interact with their caregivers.
D. They broadcast a series of familiar words for them.
14. What can be learned from Takagi’s words in paragraph 4
A. How cats communicated through eye contact.
B. How he tracked the time cats spent on images.
C. How he knew cats could feel the mismatches.
D. How cats associated original words with images.
15. Which of the following about the study on cats does the author agree with
A. The test is less reasonable than the one on babies.
B. Cats are always quicker to learn words than babies.
C. Human babies require rewards while learning words.
D. All study conclusions are not scientifically convincing.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a Sunday morning and my father decided to go shopping. He saw a delivery package at the doorsteps when he opened the door. Inside the package was a warning letter from my elementary school that I would not be allowed to return for my last year of elementary school if I couldn’t maintain five passed subjects at the end of the school year. Immediately, my father’s eyes turned red and he started shouting at me. Instantly, I started crying heavily and ran back to my bedroom, leaving him alone.
In fact, my biggest problem was math, which destroyed my confidence in my study, and I stopped listening carefully in class, finishing my homework or doing extra reading at home. My father, who was always busy with his work, rarely cared about my study, or rather me. He didn’t quite understand what I had gone through.
My father soon calmed down and approached my bedroom door. He assured me that he would be there for me helping me with my study, adding that it was just a warning letter. I knew he was trying to comfort me and I was grateful. But I also knew that he couldn’t help me because he didn’t know how.
The next day, when I went to school, my best friend Dick came to me and offered to help me with my math. I didn’t know if he had heard of the warning letter, but I was glad there was still someone who could really help me.
From that day on, Dick would work as a “professional teacher” and show me the efficient way of learning math after school. With his help, I began to find the magic of math and build my confidence.
My father was still occupied and seemingly forgot about the warning letter. With bittersweet emotions, I seldom talked to him or responded to his occasional inquiries. Luckily, he didn’t get angry or push me too hard.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With regained confidence in math, I decided to study harder.

【答案】Dear Jack,
I hope this email finds you well. To raise our interest in English learning and immerse us in American literature, our English club is going to hold an activity where we will appreciate American poetry.
With little knowledge of American poetry, I was wondering if you could help me get prepared. Could you recommend some relevant poems for me to read first It would be better if you could provide a few tips on how to appreciate them. I also hope you can introduce basic background information about American poetry, which will enable me to better appreciate it.
Looking forward to your early reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】 With regained confidence in math, I decided to study harder. In each class, I listened to the teacher attentively, losing myself in the world of knowledge. I voluntarily answered questions and actively participated in group activities. My notebooks were filled with neatly written notes, which I would review regularly. Gradually, I found myself finishing homework efficiently and sparing more time for extra reading. Becoming more and more confident in learning, I started to enjoy it, and my grades climbed steadily. Surprisingly, I passed all the exams at the end of the school year.
When I shared the good news with Dick, he told me a secret. He told me it was my father that asked him to help me. A wave of gratitude washed over me as I realized what my father had done for me. I thought back to that fateful day when he shouted in frustration and then comforted me with love and encouragement. “Maybe you should go shopping with him,” Dick suggested. “He said we would go shopping to celebrate for you.” I nodded with a smile, realizing that my father always had confidence in me.
