I put a small set of Tinkertoys in front of each student, and said: “Make something out of the Tinkertoys. You have 45 minutes today — and 45 minutes each day for the rest of the week.”A few students hesitated to start. They waited to see what the rest of the class would do. Several others checked the instructions and made something according to one of the model plans provided. Another group built something out of their own imaginations.Once I had a boy who worked experimentally with Tinkertoys in his free time, his constructions filled a shelf in the art classroom and a good part of his bedroom at home. I was delighted at the presence of such a student. Here was an exceptionally creative mind at work. His presence meant that I had an unexpected teaching assistant in class whose creativity would infect(感染) other students.Encouraging this kind of thinking has a downside. I ran the risk of losing those students who had a different style of thinking. Without fail one would declare, “But I’m just not creative.”“Do you dream at night when you’re asleep ”“Oh, sure.”“So tell me one of your most interesting dreams.” The student would tell something wildly imaginative. Flying in the sky or in a time machine or growing three heads. “That’s pretty creative. Who does that for you ”“Nobody. I do it.”“Really-at night, when you’re asleep ”“Sure.”“Try doing it in the daytime, in class, okay ”14. What does the underlined word “downside” in Paragraph 4 probably mean A. Mistake. B. Drawback.C. Difficulty. D. Burden.17. Why did the teacher ask the students to talk about their dreams A. To help them to see their creativity.B. To find out about their sleeping habits.C. To help them to improve their memory.D. To find out about their ways of thinking.CElephant Transit HomeIn both Africa and Asia elephants are being threatened by changes in their natural habitats (栖息地). People are moving into the elephants’ habitats and endangering their survival. In the country of Sri Lanka, there is one place where elephants are not only protected but also respected. It is called the Elephant Transit Home (ETH).Set up in 1995 the ETH aims to protect and nurture baby elephants that are found injured or living without their mothers in the wild. Every year about 30 baby elephants in Sri Lanka need help. As many as possible are brought to the ETH. There they are given food, shelter, and medical care. Most importantly, they are given the chance to be with other elephants and become part of a herd (象群).A day at the ETH begins early in the morning when the baby elephants are given their first feeding of milk. During the day, each baby will drink an average of 13 gallons of milk. Older elephants are fed mostly coconut leaves and other native plants. Then the elephants are allowed to walk around, eating the grass and forming a herd. The cost of caring for the baby elephants is high. The ETH spends about $125,000 each year on powdered milk for the baby elephants. At the ETH, workers try to reduce human connection with the elephants. They also try to increase bonds (联系) between the elephants. It usually takes three years for a baby elephant to be set free into its natural habitat. The elephants are sent back to the wild together with other orphans with whom they have bonded. This program helps them return to the wild as members of a herd that will communicate with each other and take care of each other. The ETH is considered one of the best animal protection sites in the world. Not only are the elephants cared for, they are treated with respect. Most importantly, they go back to live in the wild, where they belong.18. What does the underlined word “nurture” in Paragraph 2 mean A. Set free. B. Relate to. C. Focus on. D. Care for.19. What do we know about the ETH A. It changes elephants’ habitats for the better.B. It receives about $125,000 each year.C. It helps to keep baby elephants safe.D. It protects 30 elephants every year.20. Why do the workers reduce human connection with the elephants A. To study them better in a natural environment.B. To help them make it in the wild as a herd.C. To provide them with more living space.D. To train them to stay away from hunters.21. What’s the purpose of the passage A To introduce an animal protection site.B. To show the ways of wildlife protection.C. To explain the threat baby elephants face.D. To persuade the readers to protect elephants.DAre you addicted to computer games Do you stay up all night playing them Do you feel happy after you play computer games There’s no doubt that the excitement and appeal of games these days make them hard to put down. We are attracted by the choice when it comes to gaming: You can role play — creating your own fantasy characters and stories, giving you chance to step out of everyday life into an imaginary world. And there are shooting games where you can let out your anger and depression in violent situations where you kill people with guns. You can get excited from the games. However, can these kinds of games really be fun and can being absorbed in virtual reality be good for us Should we worry about their effects on our health Popular games like Grand Theft Auto have been blamed for everything from falling results at school to causing acts of extreme violence. Internet safety advisor, Alan MacKenzie, thinks “many people understandably will just think that a game is just a game and not realizing the exact content that’s in there”. He gives an example of the violence, which he says is “wholly inappropriate for anybody, not to mention children” .Others will argue that gaming is a harmless form of entertainment. There is evidence that playing video games could actually be good for us. Some games like Game of Thrones and World of Warcraft are educational and using games certainly can help children learn good qualities. Studies have also shown that the skills used in playing games can cause growth in certain areas of the brain, the ability to think in 3D and even improve our eyesight.Video game players are also no longer just simple creatures. For some, gaming is having a positive effect on their social lives with games like Halo and World of Warcraft often being played in groups. When your group works together to win the game, your sense of achievement is higher than when winning by yourself. So every coin has two sides. It seems today, gaming isn’t just for game fans and if used in a proper way, we can all take part. If video games have two sides, which side do you stand by 22. The writer used a lot of questions at the beginning to .A. lead into the topic of the passageB. show his worries about the effect of playing computer games on healthC. doubt the advantage of playing computer gamesD. ask the readers for their own opinions about games23. Paragraph 3 mainly tells us .A. games contain extreme violenceB. the contents of the game are complexC. gaming is a harmful form of entertainmentD. popular games lead to students’ falling results at school24. According to the passage, which of the following shows the good influence on social lives A. Li Hua learnt many English words from playing games.B. Han Meimei passed the exam after playing the games.C. Yang Li let out her anger and depression.D. Sun Yang worked well with his teammates.25.
