I was still hoping Goldie might come back. But it was the day after the race and there was no sign of her. I was sitting in Grandad’s garden, staring into the sky.
“Come on, Goldie, come on, Goldie.”
Sometimes racing pigeons turned up days after a race. They got lost, or hit bad weather. But that never happened to Goldie. She always came home, right on time.
I had known Goldie ever since she was an egg. I had known her since she was a pink baby pigeon. I helped Grandad look after her. I had held her in my hands after a race and felt her little heart beating. She was beautiful. She had got shiny green and blue feathers on her neck.
“Come on, Goldie.” I couldn’t stop saying that. I had been whispering it ever since I woke up. But it wasn’t working. It wasn’t bringing Goldie back.
What was I going to do I wanted my Grandad to get better. I wanted him to come out of hospital. But when he came out, he’d come straight to his pigeon cage to see Goldie. “Where’s my champion racer ” he’d ask me.
Suddenly I got a sick feeling in my stomach. I remembered what Grandad had said about the falcons (老鹰) in the old quarry (采石场). I hated those falcons. They probably killed Goldie. I could feel myself getting really angry. My fists were bunched up. Now I knew exactly what to do.
It only took five minutes to run to the old quarry. My chest was burning when I got there and I was gasping for breath but I didn’t stop. I slid down through the trees to the quarry floor.
I wanted to get those falcons. I wanted revenge (复仇), for Goldie. I wanted to be able to tell Grandad, “Take it easy, Grandad. You don’t have to worry any more. I’ve taken care of those falcons for you!”
But I couldn’t see any falcons. Where was their nest I looked around the quarry walls. That must be it. It was on the deepest side of the quarry.
“I’ll get you, falcons!” I shouted to the nest. My hands were bleeding. But I didn’t feel the pain. Finally I was there.

John, whose parents were addicted to alcohol, was always failing in exams. Although he had been failing every year, he was still passed on from grade to grade and now he was a student of the seventh grade. John was tall, but he went completely unnoticed by the school teachers until Miss Smith.
Miss Smith was smiling, young and beautiful. John liked her. Despite this, he still continued to fail. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss Smith. When he was punished for failing to hand in his homework, he felt just sad! Still, he did not study.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. John hurried through his test, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school. At home, no one checked on John to see if he was safe. No one knew whether he was even at home because no one cared. However, John never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss Smith’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
“John!” Shocked, he turned to look at her.
“Pay attention!”
John looked at his teacher, as she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy. It breaks my heart to tell you this, but...”she hesitated, and started staring at John.
“...The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
She just stared at John and John dropped his eyes. However, John still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became severe, he remained stubborn.
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“Give yourself a chance. Don’t give up!” Nothing changed him.
“John! Please! I care about you!”
Wow! Suddenly, John got it! Someone cared about him Unbelievable! John went home from school, thoughtful. Walking into the house, he found his parents drunk as expected. He quickly packed his camping gear (露营装备), a loaf of bread, a bottle of water, and for the first time, his schoolbooks. Determined, he headed for the woods.

On Saturday, we gathered at the hall to witness the award ceremony for the senior scouts(童子军). Receiving an award on such a day was a great honor for any scout, and all desired to be the scout selected to give the summary of the year’s activities for the association.
I was not the one selected to give the summary and for that, I was grateful. I could hardly stand in front of a large crowd to make a speech, but Sean could. He was selected to do the honor because he was the President of the Boy Scouts. My job was much simpler. Being the Vice-President, I was very much behind the scenes, content to ensure that everything was in smooth running order.
It was an hour to go before the ceremony began, and I had put the finishing touches to the stage. Walking down the stage, I saw my teammates in a state of panic(恐慌).When they saw me, they ran to me to tell me that Sean met with a traffic accident and would not make it to the award ceremony. Someone else had to give the summary. All of them looked hopefully at me, and I could feel my knees beginning to collapse.
All their arguments against my unwillingness were reasonable. I had a copy of the speech as well as the benefit of having seen Sean rehearse(排练)it. I was the Vice-President and therefore should take his place. Finally, I was firmly told not to turn it down any longer and they said that they were convinced that I would do the right thing. I sank down onto the floor, totally shocked by the situation.
I knew I was not a confident speaker, and the thought of presenting a summary in front of so many distinguished guests horrified me. To think that the fame of the scouts would take a beating because of me! The burden of responsibility troubled me greatly.
But there was really no way out of the situation. In the end, I quickly rehearsed the speech and got ready to go on stage for the presentation. I looked calm, but inside I was a trembling. Although they kept encouraging me, I still felt very worried that my poor performance would cost us the opportunity to win an award. Soon after, I was called to do the presentation. Having butterflies in my stomach, I walked onto the stage.

A 12-year-old boy saw something in a shop window that set his heart racing. It was a jewel box. But the price—five dollars—was far beyond Reuben Earle’s means. However, he opened the door and went inside. Standing proud and straight, he told the shopkeeper what he wanted, adding, “But I don’t have the money right now. Can you please hold it for me for some time ”
“I’ll try,” the shopkeeper smiled.
“I will raise the five dollars and not tell anybody,” Reuben said to himself.
Hearing the sound of hammering from a side street, Reuben had an idea. People built their own homes in Bay Roberts, using nails purchased in sacks (麻布袋) from a local factory. Sometimes the sacks were abandoned, and Reuben knew he could sell them back to the factory for five cents a piece.
That day he found two sacks and sold to the man in charge of packing nails.
The boy’s hand tightly held the five-cent pieces as he ran home. Near his house stood the ancient barn (谷仓). Reuben found a soda tin and dropped his coins inside. Then he climbed into the top of the barn and hid the tin.
All summer long, despite housework at home Reuben kept to his secret task. Often he was cold, tired and hungry, but the thought of the object in the shop window sustained him.
Mother’s Day had come! He uncovered the tin can, poured the coins out and began to count. He needed 20 cents more. He had to find four more sacks and sell them before the day ended.
Towards evening Reuben arrived at the factory. The sack buyer was about to lock up.
“Mister! Please don’t close up yet.”
The man turned and saw Reuben, dirty and sweat stained.
“Come back tomorrow, boy.”
“Please, Mister. I have to sell the sacks now — please.”

The routine practice in the school band came to an end. Mark and Steven smiled at each other, happily talking about the weekend arrangements. Steven was putting his saxophone(萨克斯) into the case when he tripped over a shelf Unfortunately, it fell and hit his saxophone. Clang! “Oh no!” Steven yelled.
Mark quickly picked up the saxophone, checked it and then handed it to Steven, who stood still, at a loss. Mark helped Steven put away all the things and comforted him with the thought that it was not a new saxophone. Anyway, it already had a lot of dents(凹痕).
“I know. But it’s my grandpa’s. He is visiting us this Sunday.” Steven lowered his head, upset.
Steven’s grandpa used to be a great saxophonist in the national band. When Steven was even a baby, his grandpa always played some famous tunes like “Edelweiss,” “Rivers of Babylon,” “Forever in love” for him.
Staring at Steven in confusion, Mark asked what was wrong. Steven sighed deeply and then showed his concern that whenever his grandpa came, he would ask Steven to play with his beloved saxophone. “Maybe he won’t notice the new dent or maybe he won’t care,” Mark said with a shrug(耸肩). “But what if Grandpa notices the dent How is he going to react And how shall I tell him about it ” replied Steven.
On the bus home, Steven thought about all the possibilities. To avoid playing the saxophone, he could pretend that he had a fever. Oh no! He didn’t like lying. He could get his baby brother, Joseph, to take all of Grandpa’s attention. Or, he could turn to mum for help…

Aly wandered toward the garden, where Miss Strawbridge, the landlady, was planting flowers. Last week, Aly and her parents had moved into the house in Miss Strawbridge’s backyard.
Aly watched silently until the old woman looked up and asked, “Why the long face, Aly ” “There aren’t any kids around here to play with.” said Aly. Miss Strawbridge’s blued eyes twinkled. “You should just like Rachel who used to live here.” said Miss Strawbridge. “Too bad you two young girls couldn’t have lived here at the same time.”
“What did Rachel do when she was bored ” asked Aly. “She planted a flower garden by the shed (棚子) in the backyard.” answered Miss Strawbridge. Miss Strawbridge handed Aly a trowel (铲子) and held out a box of flowers. For the rest of the afternoon, Aly pulled the weeds, dug and planted. But when she stepped back and admired her blue and yellow flowers, she smiled. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn’t there to share it.
The next day, Aly watered her flowers, then wondered what else she could do. She walked across the yard to the garden, where Miss Strawbridge sat reading. She stood silently until the old woman looked up. “What else did Rachel do when she was bored ” asked Aly. “She wrote poetry in her flower garden.” Miss Strawbridge answered. “One of her poem even won the first prize in a contest at school. The best way to learn how to write poetry is to read poetry.” She handed Aly her book.
For the rest of the afternoon, Aly lay on her stomach in the cool grass next to her flowers and read Miss Strawbridge’s book of poetry. After a while, she got some paper and a pencil from her house and scribbled (乱写) and erased. In the end she had a poem that might not be a prize winner but sounded good enough to make her smile. Still, it was too bad that Rachel wasn’t there. They could have read their poems to each other.
The next day, Aly watered her flowers, then wondered what else she could do. She rushed across the yard and knocked on Miss Strawbridge’s door. “What else did Rachel do when she was bored ” Asked Aly when Miss Strawbridge opened the door. “She played in the old shed and pretended it was her house.” Answered Miss Strawbridge.
Aly glanced back at the shed and then at Miss Strawbridge, Miss Strawbridge twinkled. “There’s nothing in the shed that you can hurt or that can hurt you.” She took a key off a hook next to the door and handed it to Aly.
She raced back into the shed, only to find a few chairs and boxes resting on the dusty shelves.

Mrs. Oreille was a very economical woman to the point that even her husband was hardly allowed any pocket money. Although they lived a rich and comfortable life, it really pained Mrs. Oreille to see any money spent. Whenever she had to spend anything, no matter how necessary it might be, she slept badly the next night. Her husband, Mr. Oreille, was continually saying to his wife, “You really need to be more generous. You see, we never get to enjoy our income.” “It is better to have too much than too little.” She used to reply to that. She was a little woman of about forty, very active, very neat and tidy, and with a very bad temper(脾气).
Mr. Oreille frequently complained about his wife. For two years, he had always come to his office with the same old patched umbrella, which amused his colleagues a lot. At last he got so tired of their jokes that he insisted on his wife buying him a new one, a good silk one, for twenty francs. He also asked her to bring him the bill, so that he could see that its quality was all right. She bought him one for eighteen francs, and said, getting red with anger as she gave it to her husband, “This will last you for five years at least.” Mr. Oreille felt quite achievable, and received a small applause at the office with his new umbrella. His colleagues even very much envied him!
When he went home in the evening, his wife said to him, “You must take care of your umbrella well, for I shall never buy you a new one again.” She took it to put it away safe, but suddenly was shocked with anger.

One day, a man, well-dressed, came into a famous jewelry shop. He explained that he wished to buy a pearl for his wife’s birthday and that the price didn’t matter because his business had been well run by him that year. After examining a number of beautiful and valuable pearls, he finally chose a nice black one that cost $5,000. He paid for the pearl, shook hands with the jeweler and left.
A few days later, the man returned and said his wife liked the pearl so much that she wanted another one just like it. It had to be exactly the same size and quality as she wanted a pair of earrings made. “Can you give me any advice on how to get such a pearl ” said the man. The jeweler replied, “I would say it’s nearly impossible to find an exact one like that pearl. I’m afraid I can’t make you satisfied.”
The rich man asked the jeweler to advertise in the newspapers. “I will offer $25,000 for the matching pearl if you can find one.” Many people answered the ad, but nobody had a pearl that was just right. Just when the jeweler had given up hope, a little old lady came into his shop. To his surprise, she pulled the wonderful pearl from her handbag. “I don’t like to sell it,” she said sadly, “I inherited it from my mother, and my mother inherited from hers. But now I really need the money.”

Anderson and Franklin are twin brothers. Their father is one of the richest men in their hometown, and their family is very well-known there. Their father often warned them to be careful of people who might steal from them. They therefore decided to take their summer holiday far away from home.
They chose a coastal city, where there were sandy beaches, expensive hotels, parties and clubs, and exciting activities along the coast. The brothers had to plan carefully. They would stay in the most expensive hotel in the city.

Catherine was the coolest kid in her class. Wherever she went, she was popular, with many kids following her and doing everything she did.
However, her deskmate, Landy, was not in the cool kids’ group. Being the tallest kid in her class, she was ridiculed (嘲笑) by her classmates, who were always chanting (唱起……歌) “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti (意大利面)”.
Catherine didn’t really like it when the kids chanted “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti”. But she never told them to stop ridiculing Landy either, and nor did she ever talk to her. She liked being popular.
One weekend, Catherine went over to visit her grandfather. Her grandfather lives on a farm, where he keeps chickens. While helping to feed the chickens, Catherine saw a special one. It looked smaller than the other chickens!
“What’s the matter with it ” She asked her grandfather, with a confused look on her face. Her grandfather told her how chickens could behave. “They have a pecking (啄) order,” he explained, “If one chicken is different, the others will push it away and keep pecking it. Sometimes they peck it so much that it dies.”
“Oh, what a poor little guy!” Catherine picked the frightened chicken up in her arms, whose heart was beating fast in the little body. Suddenly, she thought of Landy, the girl being “pecked” by her classmates. “I’m going to take it home and take good care of it,” she said with a determined look.
Back in school, Catherine told the cool kids about the chicken. “It’s looking healthy,” she said proudly. “It’s bigger and its feathers are growing. Even the cat likes it. Chito Shedden was a simple fisherman and tour guide from Siquirres, Limon Province, Costa Rica. He had a broad range of interesting facts about nature, which helped his business quite a bit.
The year was 1989 and Chito was walking along the banks of the Reventazón River when he happened upon something very strange. There was a dying male crocodile (鳄鱼). When he stepped up to carefully examine the skinny reptile, he realized it had been shot through the head and then left eyes.
He knew, dangerous as it was, he couldn't leave the poor animal there, alone and helpless. Chito acted quickly, calling for the help of several brave friends to load the heavy reptile into his boat. He knew if he could heal it, he would then send it back into the wild. He named the huge reptile “Pocho”, which means strength and began to care for him in his own backyard.
The kind and helpful fisherman started to heal Pocho with medicine, food, and more importantly, lots of care and attention. Chito fed the crocodile a steady diet of chicken and fish. He bought medicine to prevent infection (感染) and even slept by his side at night.
Affection was one of the most important factors. Chito gave him kisses and hugs. He talked to him and petted him. “The crocodile needed my love to regain the will to live,” he said. In time, Pocho improved enough to returned to normal health. It was time for him to return to his own river in the wild. Chito and his friends loaded the crocodile back into his boat and set him free in a nearby river. The two parted ways and Chito returned home alone.

【答案】“Got you!” I reached out my hand to sweep the nest away but I saw the baby bird, so lovely and so gentle. It was pink and helpless, flopping about in the nest. I thought of Goldie in her babyhood. How could I hurt that baby chick! So I started climbing again up back when I felt a soft, feathery bundle in a tiny crack next to me. “It’s Goldie!” I forgot about being scared. I carefully stuffed her inside my shirt and managed to drag myself up to the top. I found her legs almost broken and eyes dull. Luckily, in the following weeks she grew stronger and stronger.
Then, this morning, Mum said to both me and Goldie, “Grandad’s coming home.” Well, I was really pleased but worried too. With Goldie in my hands, I could feel her heart going pit-a-pit-a-pat. Soon, I heard Grandad coming down the garden. “My Champion racer!” cried grandad. “Let her fly,” said Grandad, stroking Goldie’s feathers. My stomach’s doing back flips.

The following Monday John arrived at school on time, and Miss Smith gave a quiz on the weekend homework as usual. John hurried through the test, and was the first to hand in his paper. With a look of surprise, Miss Smith took his paper. Obviously puzzled, she began to look it over. John walked back to his desk, his heart pounding within his chest. As he sat down, he couldn’t resist another look at the lovely woman. Miss Smith’s face was in total shock! She glanced up at John, then down, then up. Suddenly, her face broke into a radiant smile. The smartest boy in the seventh grade had just passed his first test!
From that moment nothing was the same for John. Life at home remained the same, but life still changed. He discovered that not only could he learn, but he was good at it! He discovered that he could understand and retain knowledge, and that he could translate the things he learned into his own life. John began to excel! And he continued this course throughout his school life. After high-school John enlisted in the Navy, and he had a successful military career.

Reuben murmured a thank you and ran home. Then, holding the tin can in his hand, he headed for the shop. “I have the money.” he told the owner proudly. The man went to the window and fetched Reuben’s treasure. He wiped the dust off and gently wrapped it in brown paper.
Then he placed the parcel(包裹)in Reuben’s hands. Racing home, Reuben burst through the front door. “Here, Mum! Here!” Reuben exclaimed as he ran to her excitedly. Then he placed a small box in her work roughened hand. Mum unwrapped it carefully. A blue-velvet jewel box appeared. Mum gently lifted the lid, with tears welling up in her eyes. She had never received such a precious gift. A smile flashing across her face, she held Reuben tightly in her arms.

【答案】One possible version:
When Sunday finally arrived, Steven still had no idea what he was going to do. Grandpa came over as expected and warmly greeted all the family one by one. Steven could have told him right then, but he froze. After dinner, when Grandpa suggested Steven's playing some music, Steven scratched his head, searching high and low for Joseph. Oh no! Mom was giving Joseph a bath. Lips bitten, forehead wrinkled, Steven dragged his saxophone from the case and began to play. Grandpa was pleasantly surprised, “You’re better than I was at your age!”
Grandpa praised Steven, but he was not happy. With misty eyes, Steven told the whole story frankly. Surprisingly, Grandpa just beamed with arms wrapping around Steven’s shoulders and shared tales about other dents. Hearing tales like trips on stage or accidental bumps with other instruments, Steven burst out giggling now and then. He was not the only clumsy one in tie family and he could tell his own stories with music. Lifting the saxophone like a shot, Steven filled the room with happy noise.

It was a trophy (奖杯) with some words — First Place in Poetry. Rachel Strawbridge. 1937. Aly stared at the silver cup belonging to Rachel Strawbridge. Slowly, a smile spread across her face.

She was also unwilling to buy a new one any more. So she decided to patch the umbrella.
Half an hour later, she mended it with a piece cut out of the old umbrella. It was not the same material and looked awkward. Mrs. Oreille didn’t tell his husband. The next day, Mr. Oreille went off with the patched umbrella. Upon unfolding his umbrella, he found the big patch. But he had no choice.

One night, they decided to go dancing. At the club, two strangers came up to them and were very friendly. Anderson and Franklin danced with them for hours. When the strangers said that they had to leave, the brothers told them where they were staying, and asked to meet them at the hotel later in the week. They agreed and the brothers were very happy.
She carries it around, and...” Everyone was impressed by Catherine’s story of her lovely chicken, laughter spreading around the classroom.

【答案】Then Catherine saw Landy alone in a corner. She felt a pang of guilt as she remembered the chicken on the farm, bullied by its peers just like Landy was bullied by her classmates. The chant “Landy, Landy, long as spaghetti” echoed in her mind, but this time it felt like a cruel reminder of her own silence and inaction. Determined to make a change, Catherine made up her mind to reach out to Landy. She walked over, ignoring the whispers and curious glances from the other kids.
But Catherine walked toward Landy, no matter what they said. With a warm smile, she greeted Landy who was invited to join her and the cool kids during lunch. Landy looked surprised but gradually a smile spread across her face. The other kids watched in astonishment as Catherine chatted animatedly with Landy, including her in their conversations and activities. Slowly but surely, Landy began to feel included and valued. Catherine’s bravery and kindness inspired others to be more accepting and inclusive, breaking down the barriers of bullying and creating a more welcoming environment for everyone.
