Throughout my struggles, music remained my true escape, the only safe space where a girl could really be herself. And I think this is what kept me going. Although I didn’t know it at the time, music and more specifically dancing were the answer, serving as the way I was going to finally overcome my shyness.
One day in 2016 I was at a party and I saw a couple dancing Cuban Salsa, it looked inviting. I wanted to be able to do those moves. I am not sure what had gotten into me. Perhaps the magic of Cuban music engaged me. But it wasn’t easy to join dance classes. However, deep inside, I knew that I had to become comfortable being uncomfortable if I wanted to grow as a person. It took time but eventually I reached a stage where I finally overcame my shyness.
Dancing with strangers became as natural as walking in the street, although I didn’t start dancing with strangers in the street. I am not sure if other types of dance would have had the same impact, but for some reason Cuban Salsa liberated me. It showed me that I could dance with anybody, no matter who they were, and be confidently myself. Dancing taught me that there are no strangers, only interesting new people we haven’t met yet.
It made me realise how exciting and fulfilling life could be when we connect with others. It helped me discover myself through others. Even more interestingly, what I experienced in Salsa started transforming my behaviour across all areas of my life. At work, I started networking and interacting with more people than ever before, I started being more authentic and somehow people sensed it and became more open around me. I became a better manager and a better leader. It created a spiral of optimism and connection.

The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, presents a critical portrait (画像) of the American dream through its description of the 1920s New York elite (精英).
The Great Gatsby’s characters represent the wealthiest members of 1920s New York society. Despite their money, however, they are not portrayed as particularly ambitious. Instead, the rich characters’ negative qualities are put on display: wastefulness, hedonism (享乐主义), and carelessness.
In The Great Gatsby, love is tied to class. As a young military officer, Gatsby fell quickly for Daisy, who promised to wait for him after the war. However, any chance at a real relationship was impossible due to Gatsby’s lower social status. Instead of waiting for Gatsby, Daisy married Tom Buchanan, an old-money East Coast elite. It is an unhappy marriage of convenience: Tom has affairs and seems just as romantically uninterested in Daisy as she is in him.
Tom Buchanan comes from the old money elite, while Jay Gatsby is a self-made millionaire. Gatsby, self-conscious about his “new money” social status, throws unbelievably numerous parties in hopes of catching Daisy Buchanan’s attention. However, at the novel’s conclusion, Daisy chooses to stay with Tom despite the fact that she genuinely loves Gatsby; her reasoning is that she could not bear to lose the social status that her marriage to Tom affords her.
Jay Gatsby is perhaps one of the most idealistic characters in literature. Nothing can stop him from his belief in the possibility of dreams and romance. In fact, his entire pursuit of wealth and influence is carried out in hopes of making his dreams come true. However, Gatsby’s single-minded pursuit of those dreams — particularly his pursuit of the idealized Daisy—is the quality that finally destroys him. After Gatsby’s death, his funeral is attended by just three guests; the “real world” moves on as though he’d never lived at all.

Flowering plants are very important to Earth’s ecosystems. They are necessary for life on Earth. Flowering plants are also called angiosperms (被子植物). Flowering plants include corn, wheat, rice and potatoes to maple, oak, apple and cherry trees.
New research based on genome (基因组) data for 9,506 species of flowering plants provides the deepest understanding yet of their evolutionary history. The research explains how angiosperms appeared and became widespread during the age of dinosaurs. It also offers explanations for how such plants have changed over time.
The team of scientists created a new tree of life for angiosperms. A tree of life is a tool that biologists use to see the evolutionary relationships among plants, animals and other life forms. Their new tree of life covers 15 times more kinds of flowering plants than the closest comparable study.
The study identified two periods of diversification among angiosperms. The first one occurred around 150 million to 140 million years ago during the Mesozoic era (时代) when 80 percent of major angiosperm species arose. The next one happened about 100 million years later during the Cenozoic era, after the extinction of the dinosaurs and the rise of mammals. That period saw decreasing world temperatures.
Researchers said angiosperms are more successful at reproducing than gymnosperms (裸子植物). Gymnosperms and angiosperms both have seeds. But the flowering plants have enclosed seeds that protect them from loss of water. This permits them to survive in a wider range of environments, from deserts to Antarctica.
They also evolved the flower, a structure that permitted them to form relationships with animal pollinators (授粉者), especially insects. Gymnosperms usually depend upon the wind for pollination. Angiosperms evolved a high diversity of fruit types, permitting effective seed spread.
Flowering plants provide most of the calories humans eat, from grains to fruits to vegetables. “They’re sources of many of our medicines and hold potential solutions to global challenges like climate change, biodiversity loss, food security and renewable energy,” researchers said.
