China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) announced an important achievement in deep earth exploration China’s first 10,000-meter scientific exploration well (井), named Shenditake 1, was successfully completed at a depth of 10,910 meters underground in the Tarim Basin, Xinjiang.
Humans have achieved great things by exploring the sky, the sea, and the earth. After the “Chang’e Lunar Mission” explored space and the “Jiaolong Submersible” dived deep into the sea, China has now made big progress in exploring deep into the earth. Shenditake 1, in the middle of the Taklimakan Desert, known as the “Sea of Death”, has set a new Asian record for deep earth drilling (钻探), and the well was drilled using China’s self-developed tools.
The digging process was full of challenges. From the surface to 10,000 meters, it took only 279 days, but the final 910 meters took more than 300 days to complete due to hard conditions under the ground. The well met many difficulties such as tool failures, holes falling down, and heavy loads. However, with the support of new technology and tools, Chinese engineers overcame these challenges and achieved this historic breakthrough.
This success marks an important step forward in China’s deep earth drilling engineering. Shenditake 1 is a proud symbol of China’s scientific and technological progress. It shows that China has the ability to achieve great things, just as it has done in deep space and deep sea exploration. This achievement will inspire more scientists and engineers to continue exploring the mysteries of our planet.

Have you ever experienced hui nan tian, or lasting humid (湿热的) weather
Hui nan tian is a special weather condition in southern China. It normally appears in spring when the temperature begins to rise and the humidity quickly increases. Before it arrives, there are usually a few cold days, with a temperature below 12°C. As the cold air goes away, warmer air quickly comes and the temperature rises, creating a lot of water vapour (蒸汽). Small water drops can be seen on windows and walls. For example, if the temperature is below 12°C from March 7th to 9th but suddenly rises on March 10th, hui nan rian will appear on March 10th.
During hui nan tian, the humid weather makes it easy for bacteria (菌) to grow. Food goes bad easily, clothes stay wet and sofas can get moldy (发霉的). Things like televisions may breakdown when they get wet inside, which can be dangerous for people to turn them on. It can also make people feel tired and sick. Catching a cold is prevalent during this time, as the temperature changes quickly. Although the weather troubles people a lot, for nature, it can be helpful. Thanks to the humid weather, plants can grow better with enough water and warmer air.
To cut down on the trouble caused by the lasting humid weather, scientists suggest that people in the south should close their windows in the morning and evening. At the same time, they should use an air conditioner to take away water from the air. It’s also useful to put newspapers on the floor, on tables and at the door to take in water and wet air.

Do you have a long list of hobbies that light you up but find it hard to balance (平衡) them all You’re not alone! The real challenge isn’t having too many hobbies, but how you manage them. In this passage, we’ll share how to enjoy all your hobbies without tiring yourself.
Focus on what you enjoy now.
It’s not easy to follow every hobby at the same time. The key is to focus on the hobbies that can bring you the most energy right now. For example, this month you’re excited about photography, but next month, you might want to try cooking. By switching hobbies based on what excites you, you’ll stay interested and avoid feeling tired.
Set a flexible schedule (灵活的时间表).
A flexible schedule helps you stay organized without pressure. You can create time blocks, such as one evening for drawing and another for guitar practice. If one hobby catches your attention more than the other, feel free to give it more time.
______
Why not get creative and combine your hobbies when possible For example, if you love being outdoors and photography, take your camera with you when you go out. By doing this, you can enjoy the best of both worlds while keeping things fresh and exciting.
Perfection (完美) is not necessary.
When you have many interests, it’s easy to feel pressure to be good at all of them. However, hobbies are supposed to be enjoyable, not stressful! Focus on the learning process and let go of the need to be perfect. It’s okay to be “just okay” at some things—what matters most is that they bring you joy.

Not all fruits change color, but many do. The color change is one sign fruits give to show animals that they are ready to be eaten. Basically it’s nature’s way of saying, “★” to animals.
Why would fruits show that they are ripe (熟的) Well, when animals eat them, it’s very helpful to the plant. When an animal eats the fruit, the seeds (种子) travel through the animal’s body. Later, the animal drops them in a different place. This allows the fruit plant to grow in a completely new area.
What’s more, fruit seeds may be covered in a soft coating and this makes it harder for them to grow. Going through an animal’s body helps them get out of this coating.
But here’s the thing: it only works if the seeds in the fruits are ripe when an animal eats them. Luckily, fruits have ways of protecting growing seeds from being eaten too soon.
One way is by looking unattractive. Fruits that are not fully grown have chlorophyll (叶绿素), which makes them green. This helps hide them among the leaves of a plant.
Once the seeds are matured, the chlorophyll begins to break down. This shows other colors—yellows, oranges, reds, blues, or purples—that were hidden by the green. When the fruits’ green cover changes to other colors, the fruits become easier for animals to find among the green leaves.
Besides changing color, fruits get softer and sweeter, and many give off a sweet smell. Animals have learned that these signs mean the fruits are good to eat. That’s good for the animals and the plants!
26.Which of the following can be put ★ in Paragraph 1
A.Come and get it! B.Watch out for me! C.Leave it alone! D.Play with me!

Have you ever used a needle (针) and thread (线) to sew (缝纫) What did you think of it
When I was a little boy, my mom, grandmother and I drove to my grandmother’s sister’s house in the next town. It was a warm summer afternoon, so I went outside to play in the yard when they all sat around the kitchen table talking.
After an hour of playing by myself, I got bored and walked inside to see what they were doing. On the kitchen table was a large homemade quilt that was still being sewn together. Pieces of colorful cloth were everywhere. I sat in a chair and watched as my great-aunt sewed a little piece of cloth onto the quilt. I looked over at the quilt and saw a piece of thread sticking out. Without thinking, I reached over to pull it.
“No!” It was my grandmother’s voice. I jumped back. That was the first time I can ever remember her yelling at me. Seeing the scared look on my face, she smiled and showed me why she had yelled. That single piece of thread weaved (迂回穿行) in and out of the different pieces of cloth.
It made its way from one end of the quilt to the other. If I had pulled it, I would have pulled the quilt apart and ruined (毁掉) hours of work.
As I look back on that moment today, I can see that each of our lives is a lot like that thread in the quilt. We are each a single piece of thread, but the other threads around us help hold everything together. That’s our purpose — to help and support the people around us.

C.His grandmother might praise him for doing that. D.The thread would make pieces of cloth together.
35.What does the writer want to tell us
A.Remembering the people around us. B.Helping the people around us.
C.Finding out what our purpose is. D.Learning to work without other people.

2025 Could Be the Hottest Year in History
Data (数据) shows that 2024 was the hottest year since 1961. The average temperature in the country reached 10.92℃ last year, which is 1.03℃ higher than the usual average, according to official records.
Global warming is the main reason for China’s higher-than-normal temperatures. It has caused rising sea levels, melting ice, and more extreme (极端的) weather, including longer heat waves and fewer cold days. The El Ni o phenomenon (厄尔尼诺现象) —the warming of water in the Pacific Ocean—also adds to rising temperatures.
A 1℃ rise in temperature has a strong influence on nature. Sea levels may rise by 2.3 meters over time, putting coastal areas in danger. Higher temperatures also harm wild crops and bring more pests (害虫). Some animals and plants may die out. Higher temperatures may temporarily increase crop production in some places. However, in the long term, farming will face bigger changes and possible decreases.
Illnesses related to heat, like heatstroke (热射病), is becoming more common. Longer heat waves lead to higher death rates, showing the need for better healthcare and ways to prevent harm.
The year 2025 seems to continue with higher-than-normal temperatures. On New Year’s Day, temperatures in areas south of the Yangtze River were over 15℃, far from the cold usually expected in winter. To deal with these problems, experts suggest developing technology to follow and predict extreme weather, like heat waves, to reduce risks.
31.How does the writer introduce the topic
A.By sharing experts’ opinion. B.By showing official data.
C.By giving examples of extreme weather. D.By telling a personal story.
32.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about
A.What global warming is.
B.What extreme weather is.
C.What causes China’s higher-than-normal temperatures.
D.What the El Ni o phenomenon is.
33.What does the word “temporarily” mean
A.In a special period. B.For a short time. C.At the same time. D.For a long time.
34.Which of the following is TRUE according to the last paragraph
A.China will experience a colder-than-usual winter in 2025.
B.On New Year’s Day, temperatures all over China were over 15℃.
C.Global warming has no influence on nature.
D.High-tech products may deal with problems caused by the rising temperatures.
35.What is the main purpose of the passage
A.To guess the exact temperature of 2025.
B.To explain the causes and effects of rising temperatures.
C.To point out that people don’t do enough to fight climate change.
D.To compare the weather in different parts of China.

At 12:46 p. m. on May 4th, 2022, thirteen Chinese scientists reached the top of Mount Qomolangma. They built eight world’s highest weather stations from 5200 to 8800 meters on the mountain and four of them were above 7000 meters.
“The first research began in 2017 and it was an important moment of China’s second scientific travel to Qomolangma. The station at 8800 meters would be the world’s highest weather station,” the leader Yao Tangdong said. To finish the work, Chinese government made up 16 teams with more than 270 scientists. They’ve gotten a training of over three years.
This year researchers will use the newest technologies to these weather stations. They can study the natural environments and human activities on Qomolangma. The newest technologies will also help scientists study different weather, so they can make right decisions about climate(气候)change.
With these technologies, strong help from government and hard work from scientists, China will become a front-runner in fields such as information technology, science, mountain climbing and geography about the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (高原)in the world.

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas. ▲ It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.
The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn’t food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.
Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.
The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens’ feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

A father saw his son crying He asked him,“What’s the matter ”The young boy replied,“My rich classmates laughed at me.They said that my father is just a worker who only lives on the money from watering and feeding plants for people.”
The father was silent for a moment, and then said, “Come with me,my son.Let’s plant some flowers.” He held his son’s hand and walked into the garden. Then, he took out some seeds and said,“Let’s plant two flowers separately. But I use clean water from the lake, and you water yours with dirty water from the pond(池塘).We will see the results in the coming weeks and at that moment you will cheer up.” The son was pleased as he joined his father in planting the flowers right away.
It took them some days to germinate (使发芽) the flower seeds. They cared for them and watched them grow. Later on, they went to the garden. The father said, “Look at the two flowers and tell me your thoughts.” “The boy said unexpectedly, My flower looks healthier than yours. But you used cleaner water. Instead, it serves as organic fertilizer (有机肥料) to help the flower grow. Like dirty water, there are some people who look down upon you in your life. Always remember that there’s nothing wrong with you. So don’t let those bad words influence you. Have you ever seen a bee fly busily Do you think the bee is flying around In fact, the bee is hard at work.
Bees spend much time looking for food. But not all the bees in the hive (蜂巢) do that. Bees can be divided into three kinds — a queen bee, drones (雄蜂) and worker bees. The queen bee is very important. She is the mother of all the bees in the hive. Worker bees do all the other work in the hive. Besides looking for food, they make and clean the hive. They also look after and protect the queen.
Bees make dance-like movements inside the hive to send messages about food. They use different movements to give different information. They tell where food can be found and how far away it is from the hive. Bees can even share how much food there is and how good it is.
And surprisingly, a new study has found that a group of bees could generate an amazing total of electricity by beating their wings more than 200 times per second. And the amount of electricity could reach 100 V to 1,000 V. That’s eight times greater than the electricity a storm cloud can produce.
Scientists found that the thicker a cloud of bees is, the more electricity it generates. Based on these findings, the team recorded that bees — which group together to form a huge, thick cloud of bees — could have an influence similar to that of a storm. Further research is needed to find out how electricity influences the bees and their environment.

They produce less pollution, too. Some new products like computers and TVs are made to save energy in efficient ways. Also, we should turn off the lights, the TV, the computer and so on when we don't use them.

Medals (奖牌) are an important part of the Olympic Games. The medals of Beijing 2022 Olympic Winter Games are named Tongxin, meaning “Together as one” in Chinese. The idea comes from yu bi, a piece of ancient Chinese jade (玉) with circles that have the same center.

The Taklimakan Desert (塔克拉玛干沙漠), which is in the northwest part of China, is the biggest desert in our country. It has been a big worry because it’s really large, about 337,600 square kilometers and there are a lot of sandstorms that come from it. These sandstorms are very bad for the nature and the way people live around it. So, people started a big project to put a green belt (带) around the desert.
By the end of 2023, a large part of a 2,761-kilometer-long green belt had already been made around the desert. In 2024, the last 285 kilometers, mostly in the south of the desert where the sandstorms are super bad, were finished. Now the whole Taklimakan Desert has a green belt all around it. This Project has to do with six counties (县) in three parts of Xinjiang.
The building of this green belt used many different scientific ways. For example, the China Railway Construction Development Group (中铁建发展集团) made a system to stop the sand. This system has three main things. There are tall things to stop the sand, squares made of straw (草方格) and wide lines of trees. These things work together well to stop the desert from getting bigger.
When the green belt around the desert was successfully finished, it brought a lot of good things. First, it made the nature around the desert better. There are fewer and not as strong sandstorms now. Second, it kept the farming near the desert safe. So, farmers can grow food more easily. Also, the places where people live in cities and in the countryside are nicer. Because there are fewer sandstorms, there is less harm to the things like roads and buildings, and more people come to visit. So, the local people can make more money from having visitors. This project shows how much China wants to stop the desert from getting worse and make the nature better.
