11、 The Parks Conservancy’s community science programs combine landscape-scale science with community engagement and education. Community members participate in large-scale studies to list and monitor species and ecosystems in the parks, helping to fill gaps in our knowledge about our local environment. These volunteer programs are an opportunity to learn new skills and to connect to our local public lands through participation in science. We couldn’t build this knowledge without our volunteers!
Programs include: Marin Wildlife Watch — a mountain-wide study using motion-activated cameras to monitor mammal populations. California Giant Salamander Inventor — documenting this rare species’ population through crowd-sourced data. BioBlitzes — these are one-day events where community members and scientists conduct a survey of a specific area to contribute to our knowledge of an area’s biodiversity typically using the iNaturalist platform and/ or making collections. Bioquests — multi-day campaigns to document when and where specific species show up, typically using the iNaturalist platform.
This work is done in partnership with our agency partners, academic institutions, and nonprofit conservation organizations. When you participate in one of our programs, you get to learn new skills and contribute to these important bodies of knowledge about the world. Please note each program has its own structure and availability and level of commitment required can vary by season and program size. Some programs also require training, which is provided free to volunteers.
Emailcommunityscience@onetam.orgfor questions about our programs. You can also learn more about our approach to community science on One Tam’s website.

12、 Georgia, who works for a popular fashion store in the UK named Bows Boutique, left her purse at a gas station after her company party in early December. She was heartbroken, but thinking someone must have taken it away, she gave up the idea of going back to look for it and didn’t phone the station to ask about it. But her tears quickly dried when an off-duty firefighter named Nyma showed up at her door.
A ring camera caught Georgia and Nyma’s exchange, and the owner of Bows Boutique posted the video on the store’s Instagram page. In it, Nyma rings her doorbell and Georgia answers it using a phone app. Nyma explained where he found the lost purse and said he decided to drive straight to her house, so she wouldn’t have to experience an extra moment of panic.
Georgia was moved to tears and kept offering to send Nyma money for his good deed, but he refused. He simply asked her to pay it forward, and explained that it was no trouble for him though Georgia knew he needed to drive hours to her house. Because she wasn’t home at the time, he left the purse in an empty garbage bag and left.
The owner and Georgia were so touched by the gesture, and they started a search for the mystery man so they could give him a proper “thank you”. Georgia uploaded the video. It didn’t take long to find him. They invited him to the store for an official meet — and he went.
“He is such a kind man,” reads another post. “It was an absolute pleasure to meet him. The video has got millions of views and we hope he will be a positive influence on many. ”
24. How did Georgia respond when realizing she lost her purse
25. Which can best describe Nyma
26. What did Nyma advise Georgia to do
27. What can be the best title for the text
13、 A student stands before a shopkeeper on a Chinese market street. The shopkeeper announces that he has many things to sell, from cakes to postcards. The student is pondering (思索) the selection. Like many people learning a new language, he must consider grammar, pronunciation and tenses before answering. When it comes to Mandarin (普通话), that is especially difficult.
This scene is not actually playing out in China, but at an American university where a classroom has been equipped with a learning game, enhanced by AI.
The project is the result of collaboration between IBM Research and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI). The class, called AI-assisted Immersive Chinese, aims to create the kind of interactions a student could normally only get in a study-abroad program.
The class is built like a video game. Students enter a classroom with a 360-degree display to face a huge screen. They can bargain with digitized shopkeepers selling fruit or order Peking duck from a waiter at a restaurant. The conversational skills these avatars (虚拟化身) have make it possible for them to respond in real time to the students, with a degree of unpredictability that makes it similar to communicating with real humans. Unlike the real world, where people may make embarrassing public mistakes in the service of learning a new language, here students can pause the scene after messing up a pronunciation and replay it again to fix mistakes as needed.
“We’ve enabled the class to be like a game,” said Hui Su, the project’s lead researcher. “And like any game, there are multiple levels with growing difficulty. The students who signed up for this course are at varying levels of Mandarin proficiency. They can set the level of dialogue difficulty individually and progress at the best speed for them.”
Thegermof this idea appeared in 2013, when some language teachers and some game development teachers at RPI wondered if they could band together to create a language learning game. But the language interaction capability of the technology available was limited. In 2016, after RPI had teamed up with IBM, they finally had all the tech they needed to create what they wanted. It was a perfect marriage of RPI’s immersive technology and IBM’s speech recognition software.
The system could have taught any language, but Su chose Mandarin. “Mandarin is one of the most difficult languages to learn,” said Su. “It’s a tonal language, with four different tones. Each character can have four different meanings when pronounced with different syllabic (音节的) emphasis.”
8. What is the student mentioned in paragraph 1 doing
9. What does AI-assisted Immersive Chinese offer
10. What is stressed in Hui Su’s words in paragraph 5
11. What does the underlined word “germ” in paragraph 6 mean
14、 “Are we alone in the universe That’s the key question we’ re trying to answer here,” Meenakshi Wadhwa, a planetary scientist, tells her class. As she explains, one student takes notes while another holds up an iPhone to take a photo of the slides. In many ways this lecture hall at Arizona State University is like any other. A group of enthusiastic women sit attentively in the front row; the men are spread out in the back. But the hearing aids suggest how unusual this class is.
Mirabella, a 20- storey“ university retirement community” on ASU’s campus, is home to over 300 retired people. When it was opened in 2020, the senior- living facility was nearly fully subscribed. Most residents are having a ball. They can attend the same classes and cultural events as students, but with the distinct benefit of not having to take exams. In their dorms, facilities include an art studio, a pool and gym, and a games room. Only the second floor feels institutional, with a memory- care centre and rooms for residents who need round- the- clock attention.
This is part of a wider trend. An estimated 85 colleges in America are now connected to senior living communities. With more than 10,000 baby boomers(生育高峰期出生的人) in America turning 65 every day, the opportunity for alternative forms of retirement is pared with previous generations, boomers are wealthy, educated and picky. They want to remain active and not locked away. These wishes can all be met on a university campus.
For universities, welcoming pensioners(领退休金者) can make sense too. Nationally, undergraduate enrolment(入学) dropped from over 18m in 2010 to below 16m in 2022. As for what to do with the extra space, the smartest ones, Andrew Carle at Georgetown University says, provide a continuum of care— including for the very last stage of life.“ The charity is the icing on the cake,” he says of the potential that residents will include universities in their wills.
【小题1】How does the writer introduce the topic
【小题2】Why are university retirement communities well- received

15、 Every year at this harvest time, you are likely to read articles about the promise that the average family can save money by growing their own fruit and vegetables. 【
So can your average home gardener really compete on price against the economies of scale of industrial agriculture 【小题2】 Say you want to start with potatoes in a household container. In the UK, these cost around 75. Given potatoes in my supermarket are 0.90 per kilogram, you would have to produce at least 83 kg to break even. Assuming you get similar output as the professionals, a 60×60 cm container would only give you around 2 to 3 kg per year. So at best, you would only get your money back after around 27 years.
【小题3】 Well, given that everything goes well, you will still need to start by buying seed potatoes. In my garden centre these don’t come cheap. For easy-to-transport produce with long shelf lives, like potatoes, carrots and onions, it really is almost impossible to get the maths to work in your favour on a domestic scale, as efficiencies resulting from agricultural mechanisation make these so inexpensive to buy.
However, when it comes to more delicate offerings, the opposite is often true. The plants harvested only by hand can be costly to buy. 【小题4】 Many herbs like mint, dill and fennel are so tough that much of the gardening advice is how to prevent them from taking over your pot. This is also true for pricey salad crops like wild rocket, or arugula, which live a secret double life as a common garden weed.

Denise decided to treat herself and a close friend to an exciting vacation in the Bahamas. The two teenagers, coming from the quiet suburbs of Illinois, had never seen the vast ocean. So they were eagerly waiting for their first swimming experience in the vast, open ocean.
When they got to the beach, they noticed that no one else was in the water, and that the waves were huge. The sight of the big waves might have frightened others, but that didn’t bother Denise. She had seen in the movies people body surfing and having fun in big waves. She thought it looked amazing and she believed that she could do the same.
At that moment, the only soul in sight was a local fisherman who was cleaning his fishing net on the sand. As Denise and her friend began taking off their shoes, the fisherman stopped, his eyes widening in astonishment as he stared at the two girls preparing to brave the waves. He could not believe that someone would dare to swim in such waves.
Denise thought it was a bit rude of this strange fisherman to just stand there staring, but she said nothing since she couldn’t help but to jump into the vast ocean. Seeing the waves, Denise’s friend felt a bit scared, so she refused to go swimming with Denise. With a heart jumping and spirits high, Denise alone rushed into the water without a second thought.
But as soon as she got into the ocean, she was struck by a huge, powerful wave. Denise was completely helpless. She was swirling (旋转) around in that powerful water, choking on a mixture of salt, water, and sand. Every breath was a struggle.
As the wave finally released its hold, Denise found herself struggling to stay afloat (漂浮的). All she could hear was her friend’s scream. Her mind was racing with thoughts of survival and the distant hope that somehow, somehow, she would make it back to shore.

可知,上文讨论了使用容器种植土豆可能需要很长时间才能回本,再由后文“Well, given that everything goes well, you will still need to start by buying seed potatoes. In my garden centre these don’t come cheap. 可知,后文是在讨论在花园土壤中种植土豆,E选项中“the container”和上文相呼应,“in garden soil”引出下文种植方式,所以,E选项“What if you abandon the container and just grow some potatoes in garden soil (如果你放弃容器,在花园的土壤里种一些土豆呢?)” 【小题4】由上文“However, when it comes to more delicate offerings, the opposite is often true. The plants harvested only by hand can be costly to buy. 和下文“Many herbs like mint, dill and fennel are so tough that much of the gardening advice is how to prevent them from taking over your pot. F选项“The three most expensive items in my supermarket happen to be the easiest to grow. 【小题5】由上文“However, when it comes to more delicate offerings, the opposite is often true. The plants harvested only by hand can be costly to buy. 和“Many herbs like mint, dill and fennel are so tough that much of the gardening advice is how to prevent them from taking over your pot. This is also true for pricey salad crops like wild rocket, or arugula, which live a secret double life as a common garden weed. 故C选项“These turn out to be the exception to the general economic reality.

Frightened and worried, Denise’s friend ran quickly towards Denise. Once Denise was safe and sound, the fisherman, breathing heavily, stood there for a minute to ensure she was in good condition.
Making sure Denise was safe, the fisherman simply turned around and was about to leave. Overwhelmed with gratitude, Denise thanked the fisherman from the bottom of her heart for his courageous rescue. This life-threatening experience served as a tough lesson, teaching her the significance of honoring nature’s strength and cherishing life.
