Time: Until December 23 Decades ago, my friend Caetlin received a special assignment from the poet Robert L. Hass,
第 2 页 共 7 页
who instructed each student to memorize three poems of their choosing from The Norton Anthology of American Literature—not for any urgent exam reason, he claimed, but instead to prepare them for their unavoidable future occasions when you’re going to be alone, and poetry is going to be all you have.
If the task was as a strange one, it’s because the act of memorizing a poem feels curiously old-fashioned in an era when few of us encounter poetry at all. When I was in graduate school, working toward a degree in English literature, I mostly limited myself to essays. It was only in my 40s that I began to change my ways. It happened in a flight to Seattle. For hours, I read nothing else but a poem. Sometimes I spoke its lines aloud, my voice masked by the airplane’s thrum. Sometimes I went through the whole poem at once, and sometimes I repeated a single stanza (诗节) over and over, and by the time my plane landed on the West Coast, I had the whole thing, all 40 lines of it, in my head. Because the process is as simple as it is very boring, memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime. The boredom of repetition reduces the great charm it has. But as you run your hands through the rock, the lines at last come together again, and the scattered text transforms back into a treasure.
In other words, poetry survives continuously by becoming a part of those who read it. It can do so only because it is so specific, so entirely different from us, that taking it in expands our own sense of what we are.
Some of the poems I’ve memorized are already fading, and that’s fine. I know that if I spend a little time with them, they’ll sing in me again. Others keep beating in me like a new pulse. I won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your life better, but it will make you more: more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what you might yet become.
24 .Why did Robert L. Hass advise students to read poems
A .To become literature professors. B .To prepare for the coming exams.
C .To compose more original poems. D .To relieve their future loneliness.
25 .Why does the author say that memorizing a poem begins as a crime
A .It’s out of date to recite poems. B .Repetition wastes a lot of time.
C .Repetition ruins the poem’s beauty. D .It’s a shame to read poems on plane.
26 .How does understanding poetry influence us
A .By broadening self-understanding. B .By refreshing our good memories.
C .By helping us survive the hard life. D .By reminding us to forget the past.
27 .What is the author’s attitude towards memorizing poetry in the last paragraph
A .Doubtful. B .Reserved. C .Appreciative. D .Critical.
Engineers usually build devices using solids like metal or plastic. However, a team in China has created a new type of device using drops of water. These devices help study and management of tiny amounts of liquid (液体), and the best part is that they are easy to build, adjust, and refashion.
The idea for this project came from blocks. Xin Du, a researcher at Southeast University in Nanjing, China, was inspired when a student brought in a set of blocks. Du realized that just like blocks that can be amalgamated together and can be rearranged, water droplets (水 滴 ) could do something similar. This could be a great way to build systems that control the flow of liquids in tiny tubes, a field known as microfluidics, which studies how liquids move in small spaces, such as in batteries or to model blood flow in the body.
In their research, Du’s team designed a system where water droplets could stick together to form a liquid path. They created a grid with tiny plastic columns that held the droplets in place. When the droplets touched, they joined together but did not spill (溢 出 ) out. This allowed the scientists to control the direction of the liquid path. If they needed to change the direction, they could easily move the droplets around, much like changing the setup of blocks.
The system was reconfigurable, meaning it could be quickly adjusted without starting over. This flexibility is important in microfluidics, where experiments often need to be changed as new
discoveries are made.
Du’s team is also working to improve the system by making even smaller channels. Their final goal is to use this technology to improve organoid research, where artificial organs (人造器官) made from living cells are studied. This new system could provide better ways to supply nutrients or blood to these growing cells, making the study of living tissues more accurate and efficient.
28 .How does the device created by the team in China differ from others
A .It is made from plastic. B .It is designed by a student.
C .It employs water drops. D .It features metal structures.
29 .What does the underlined word “amalgamated” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A .Enlarged. B .Combined. C .Distinguished. D .Shown.
30 .What does Du’s team expect of the system
A .It will have wide application in medical treatment.
B .It will bring a heavy profit to the team.
C .It will enable students to be fond of blocks.
D .It will decrease the cost of artificial organs.
31 .Which is the most suitable title for the text
A .Exposure to Various Blocks Sharpens the Brain.
B .Blocks Inspired a New Way to Study Liquids.
C .There Is a Growing Trend Toward Playing Blocks. D .Engineers Unlocked the Secret of Water Droplets.
In the rich countries of the West, the electric vehicle revolution is well underway. Climate-conscious consumers drive Teslas or Polestars for reasons of morality and fashion. Poorer countries are also experiencing a wave of electrified trend. In Bangladesh, electric three-wheeler taxis, known as tuk-tuks, are rapidly replacing gas-powered ones on the streets. Such electric
vehicles are climate friendly, cost-effective, and help reduce air pollution.
Yet a glance under the hood (引 擎 盖 ) of these vehicles reveals a poisonous secret: each tuk-tuk runs on five massive lead-acid batteries (铅酸电池),containing almost 300 pounds of lead in total. Every year and a half or so, when those batteries need to be replaced and recycled, about 60 pounds of lead leak into the environment. Battery recycling, often at small-scale unregulated factories, is a highly profitable but deadly business.
Lead is dangerous, and any exposure to it is harmful to human health. Lead that has entered the environment hurts people on an extraordinary scale. The numerous ways lead enters air, water, soil, and homes across the developing world — and the enormous damage it does to human health, wealth, and welfare — causes one of the biggest environmental crises in the world yet receives little attention.
The World Bank estimates that lead kills 5.5 million people per year, which would make it a bigger global killer than AIDS, malaria, diabetes, and road traffic deaths combined. On top of the shocking deaths, the social burden of lead poisoning is extraordinary, as is its contribution to global inequality — our research on the cognitive (认知的) effects of lead poisoning suggests that it may explain about one-fifth of the educational achievement gap between rich and poor countries.
But unlike many challenges faced by developing countries, lead poisoning is a problem that is fixable with some attention and a relatively modest financial investment. Better monitoring, research, and rules can help protect children all over the world from the dreadful effects of lead poisoning and reduce the massive global costs it brings.
32 .How does the author describe the lead problem in paragraph 2
A .By making a comparison. B .By analyzing hidden causes.
C .By listing convincing numbers. D .By explaining its working principle.
33 .What can we learn from the text
A .Lead enters rich countries in various ways.
第 4 页 共 7 页
B .Lead poisoning may make poor societies poorer.
C .Exposure to lead doesn’t necessarily harm someone.
D .Lead leaking has caused great fear in rich and poor countries.
34 .What can be done to solve lead poisoning in developing countries
A .Fixing these used batteries. B .Putting certain effort and money.
C .Prohibiting the illegal use of lead. D .Reducing the cost of recycling lead.
35 .What’s the text mainly about
A .The global lead poisoning crisis. B .The ways to solve lead problems.
C .The outcomes of using electric vehicles. D .The impacts of lead poisoning on human health.
Although many people still like to have three main meals a day, others are choosing a lighter way of eating rather than rich meals. 36 . The important thing is to make sure you choose healthy foods. 37
The demands of modern life mean that we don’t always have the opportunity to sit down and eat
three meals a day. For some people, the pressures of combining work and family leave little time for food preparation. Others regularly eat on their own and don’t want to bother cooking a full
meal.Focus on nutrients
There is no “right” way of eating, as long as you take in all the nutrients your body requires. 38 .
Boredom or stress can drive us to the fridge, or corner shop. If you make sure all your snacks are nutritious ones, as well as lower in fat and sugar, you are less likely to eat beyond your body’s
needs.Choose healthy snacks
Starchy carbohydrates (淀粉类碳水化合物) have a lot to offer nutritionally and make excellent
choices as the basis both for snacks and for lunch. 39 . Fresh fruits or vegetables are both excellent choices for a light snack. Although not as filling as starchy carbohydrate foods, some of
them are high in disease-fighting vitamins.Making time for lunch
40 , most of us try to make time for lunch, even if it is just a “light bite” — a sandwich in the office, or a simple hot dish in the canteen, Lunch is an essential pause in the middle of the day, a chance to relax and recharge our batteries a little.
A .As we are familiar with our habits
B .Either option is equally acceptable
C .Eat in a way that suits your lifestyle
D .We don’t just eat because we’re hungry
E .Change your lifestyle through eating properly
F .No matter what our eating pattern is for the rest of the day
G .They are filling and help you stay filled with energy for a while

As a single mother, I’ve never doubted my daughter Jane’s dream to be a singer on the stage. At an early age, she was crazy about singing. Whenever she had a chance, she would sing to her heart’s content. Her sweet and charming voice tended to get people around attracted to her songs.
Living in a small city, I took several odd jobs, determined to do everything in my power to support her. Soon after Jane attended school, her music teacher Mary noticed her talent by chance and volunteered to give her some guidance on how to sing. Jane practiced so hard that before long she made great progress in singing.
Unfortunately, one noon a year later, Jane was crossing the street when a careless driver knocked her down. She was rushed to hospital. When I hurried there, the doctor told me that my daughter would probably not stand on her own feet. I froze with shock, feeling as if I had been thrown into a dark world. Weak and dizzy, I was about to fall to the ground when someone took hold of me.
It was Mary, who got the news and raced here. She comforted me, saying firmly, “Grace, Jane needs you. You must stay calm and strong.” I nodded. Having calmed down, I entered the ward with
Mary.
That night, Jane recovered her consciousness (知觉) and opened her eyes. Holding her hand, I said, “My dear, everything would be fine.” Mary comforted her gently, “I know you are a strong girl, Jane. Don’t worry. We’ll be standing by you.” I was heartbroken to see tears streaming down Jane’s cheeks.
After two months, we returned home from hospital. Her teachers and friends frequently visited her. Jane eventually accepted the fact that she would have to get around in a wheelchair. Never did she refer to the subject of singing again. I knew she was a nice and understanding girl, who was afraid that talking about her original dream would upset the two of us.
