英语试题 第 3 页 共 12 页
your first time entering our contest Don't fret ! We' re here to help.
The basics
Students can make a podcast about any topic they' re interested in, as long as they keep it between three to eight minutes. The entries should be purely original work by students. Please keep it clean! No offensive language will be allowed. And students do need to work with an adult to fill out the submission form to enter the contest.
Where to get started
Choosing a good story is just as important as your audio production or editing skills. For example, a favorite entry from last year was a personal story, reporting on a young person's experience learning to read with dyslexia(阅读障碍) and discussions on everyday topics like school lunch and teen fashion. Again, you can choose any topic you wish to explore.
The selection
Our judges will select a middle school and high school grand prize winner. The grand prize includes a certificate, a trophy, and an interview from NPR. For fourth graders—a new category we created last year— we’ ll select the best entries and air some or all of those podcasts on NPRprograms. In previous years, our winners also received additional recognition from their schools, and many were interviewed by local media.
Resources
Before you hit the record button, check out our podcasting resources. We cover everything from how to tell a good story, how to sound like yourself on a microphone to how to use music in your podcast.
For more tips and the latest updates on this year's contest, don't hesitate to reach out to us at studentpodcastchallenge@npr.org.Students, we can't wait to hear your stories.Good luck!

Chineses architecture has long been thought to put style above function. A series of quiet but remarkable buildings in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, have slowly changed that impression.Behind them is Chinese architect Liu Jiakun, the winner of the 2025 Pritzker Architecture Prize. He is the second architect from China to receive this highest honor for the profession, followingWang Shu in 2012.
Since 1999, Liu has been working in the Yulin area, one of Chengdu's most native and lively neighborhoods. In his spare time, the architect often goes grocery shopping or eats noodles at a tiny restaurant near his office. These experiences have given Liu an understanding of what the locals truly need in terms of architecture. For example, inspired by Chengdu's basin geographical feature, his West Village(西村大院) project is a five-story building surrounded by elevated running tracks. The building provides large, mixed-use spaces for residents nearby. It has also become a lifestyle landmark, attracting social media users.
Liu's passion for regional cultures is not limited to Chengdu, and he applies his design principles to various projects. The Suzhou Museum of Imperial Kiln Brick (苏州御窑金砖博物馆) is Liu's project in Jiangsu Province. To protect the local imperial kiln heritage, the architect made changes as small as possible to the original ruins. Like many of his works, the museum seems humble at first sight. But when you look closely at its main structure, you' ll notice an aesthetic(美学的) combination of kiln and palace architectural features. The design shows a deep respect for both the environment and local culture.
Liu, in addition to being an architect, also wrote novels. By the end of the last century, he had published several of them. His talent and passion for literature have inspired him to explore architectural practices that use books as a tool to advance rural revitalization(乡村振兴). Avillage bookstore designed by Liu in Qujing, Yunnan Province, is set to open in May. Covering800 square meters, the bookstore taps into the potential of cultural spaces in rural settings.
Liu's respect for the local environment and people is shared by many Chinese architects.China's rich and diverse regional cultures have provided them with the foundation to carve their own paths.
24. How is Liu's approach toward architecture different from traditional views
A. He focuses on traditional aesthetics.
B. He prioritizes function over design.
C. He balances both design and function.
D. He draws inspiration from western design.
25. What helps Liu understand the locals' architecture needs
A. Experiencing local life. B. Observ ng foreign designs.

At first glance, a dead tree might just look like a lifeless, fallen log. But look closer: beneath the rotting bark(树皮), the wood is full of life. Upon its death, the tree's tightly sealed tube system, previously used to transport nutrients and water, becomes empty and allows some creatures to pass through, according to Matteo Garbelotto, a professor at the University ofCalifornia, Berkeley.
These empty trunks, still standing upright, are also called snags or wildlife trees. Because of their verticality, they can host a high diversity of species that varies from top to bottom. Fallen trees, often called logs, are also valuable habitats, though for smaller species, Garbelotto says. Both types attract all sorts of life, starting with fungi (真菌) .
Fungi do much of the hard work of speeding up the decomposition process, softening the hard trunk into something with many small holes. This allows in a whole host of species seeking food and shelter: beetles get in to lay egg, amphibians nestle under the bark, and birds feeding on insects build nests within the trunk itself.
The collection of wildlife changes over the course of the tree's decay(腐烂), with each new species contributing to and profiting from the process. Logs generally increase opportunities for insects, amphibians, and reptiles and make a good combination with snags, Garbelotto says.
While some species like bark beetles and woodpeckers strongly prefer dead or rotting wood for nesting, others, including wood-decaying fungi, can only survive in deadwood.
And it's not just the animals that benefit from decaying trees. They provide natural protection and support for young seedlings to grow. As trees decompose, carbon and nitrogen stores are slowly reabsorbed into the soil, a critical step in nutrient recycling, both for young trees and for the larger ecosystem.
From a climate perspective, letting trees rot is critical. Large trees in particular act as significant carbon
英语试题 第 6 页 共 12 页
sinks, which can absorb the carbon dioxide from burning fossil fuels, and allowing them to decompose naturally reduces the amount of carbon dioxide— and, thus, heat— in the atmosphere.
Whenever possible, forestry experts prefer to leave dead trees untouched.
28. What is the main function of dead trees according to paragraph 1
A. They block the growth of young seedlings.
B. They provide food and shelter for large animals.
C. They support species and maintain biodiversity.
D. They have little ecological impact when decaying.

30. Which of the following about fungi is true
A. They prefer wildlife trees to fallen logs.

31. What is the best title of the passage
A. The Afterlife of a Dead Tree. B. The Silent Power of Nature.
C. The Quite Decay of Fallen Leaves. D. The Battle Against a Tree's Decay.

Recently, Earth grabbed itself a second moon in the form of a newly discovered asteroid(小行星) named 2024 PT5. Unlike the moon, Earth's primary companion which has accompanied our planet for around 4.5 billion years, this“new mini-moon” will stick around for just two months before it heads back to its home in an asteroid belt following our planet and orbiting the sun.
A team of scientists spotted 2024 PT5 as they routinely monitored newly discovered objects around Earth. “The asteroid paying us a visit belongs to the Arjuna asteroid belt, a secondary asteroid belt made of space rocks that follow the orbit very similar to that of Earth at an average distance to the sun of about 150 million kilometers,” said research lead author Carlos de laFuente Marcos.
Marcos explained that some of these asteroids in the Arjuna asteroid belt can approach Earth at a close range of around 4.5 million kilometers and at low speeds of around 3,540 kilometers per hour. “Under these conditions, one of these asteroids may be captured by Earth's gravity and become a temporary moon of Earth. The asteroid 2024 PT5 will undergo this process for about
英语试题 第 7 页 共 12 页
two months,” Marcos added. “It will not follow a full orbit around Earth.”
Mini-moon events come in two flavors. The first is about long episodes during which the asteroid completes one or more revolutions about our planet, with these gravitational engagements (引力作用) lasting one or more years. The second type of episodes is short engagements in which the small body does not complete one full revolution. These temporary captures can last just days, weeks or even a few months. Short mini-moon events are relatively frequent, with several events happening per decade. Long mini-moon events, on the other hand, are rare with Earth experiencing one around every ten or twenty years.
Unfortunately, during its occupation around Earth, 2024 PT5 won't be visible to the vast majority of skywatchers. “The asteroid is too small and dark for typical amateur telescopes. However, it is well within the brightness range of typical telescopes by professional astronomers,”Marcos said.
32. How long will the asteroid 2024 PT5 stay near Earth
A. Over a decade. B. About two months.
C. Less than a week. D. Around 4.5 billion years.
33. What makes 2024 PT5 a“mini moon” rather than a true moon
A. It lacks a stable orbit around Earth. B. It is smaller than other asteroids.
C. It moves faster than Earth's moon. D. It reflects too little light to be seen.
34. What writing technique is used to explain mini-moon events
A. Definition. B. Classification.
C. Comparison. D. Illustration.
35. What can we infer from Marcos’ words from the last paragraph
A. The asteroid 2024 PT5 is unusually bright.
B. Skywatchers should purchase advanced telescopes.
C. Professional knowledge is needed for asteroid observation.
D. Amateur telescopes are not powerful to observe 2024 PT5.

Almost everyone procrastinates(拖延). Whether it's avoiding an assignment, delaying house chores; or putting off a visit to the dentist, we' ve all been there. The tasks you avoid aren't always hard or time-consuming, but they may trigger discomfort, leading to stress and guilt. 36
Begin with bite-sized tasks.
英语试题 第 8 页 共 12 页
One of the biggest reasons we procrastinate is that tasks seem too big or overwhelming. 37 When you break a task into smaller steps, it becomes much more manageable. For example, if you' re avoiding cleaning your room, don't aim to finish it in one day. Instead, focus on sorting just one corner or organizing a single shelf.
38
We often procrastinate on the tasks we find most unpleasant. Whether it's an awkward conversation you need to have or a particularly tough assignment, putting off these tasks only increases anxiety. However, if you do them first in the morning, you' ll free up mental space to handle the rest of your day more smoothly.
Use rewards to stay motivated.
39 One way to encourage yourself to tackle uncomfortable tasks is by using rewards.Pair an unpleasant task with a desirable activity, or promise yourself a treat once the task is done. This method transforms the task into a stepping stone to something you enjoy.
Apply the two-minute rule.
The two-minute rule suggests that if a task can be done in two minutes or less, do it immediately. 40 For example, if you need to send a quick email, respond to a text, or wash a few dishes, handle it immediately. These small actions might seem insignificant, but they can clear your mental burden and create momentum (动力) towards larger tasks.
A. Cut down on decisions.
B. Tackle your toughest task first.
C. It helps stop small tasks from piling up.
D. Sometimes, we need a little external push.
E. The trick is to begin with something simple.
F. Below are some strategies to help you conquer procrastination.
G. It encourages you to take action when you' re 70 percent ready.

could handle myself. But my dad, who had always been overprotective, wasn't convinced. He said the world wasn't as safe as I thought, that there were dangers I wasn't ready for. Maybe it was because I was his only child, or may be it was because of the time I got lost at the county fair when I was seven, sending him into a full-blown panic. I had only been missing for twenty minutes, but to him, it felt like hours. He never let me out of his sight after that.
But I was older now. I needed my independence.
This morning, after weeks of pleading, he had finally relented. With a sigh, he pulled a crisp twenty-dollar bill from his wallet and handed it to me.
“Call me if you need anything,” he had said, his brow furrowed in concern.
“I' ll be fine, Dad,” I had replied, rolling my eyes but secretly thrilled.
Now, as I wandered through the aisles(过道) of Walmart,I felt a rush of independence. Ilingered(逗留) in the beauty section, picking up different bottles of shampoo, comparing labels, and enjoying the simple pleasure of making my own choices. No one was there to hurry me along or tell me what to buy. I was free, and it felt amazing.
Then, out of nowhere, a woman hurried toward me. She looked to be in her forties, with short, dark hair and a worried expression.
“I don't mean to scare you,” she said in a hushed voice, “but there's a man following you. He's been peeking(偷窥) at you from the next aisle.”

Hello everyone, it is an honor to represent our group in summarizing our discussion. We believe that while technology brings convenience and comfort, it's also taking away some valuable things from us.
First, we are losing real face-to-face communication. Many people now prefer texting to talking, which weakens personal connections. Second, our critical thinking and problem-solving skills may decline since we often rely on quick online answers instead of thinking deeply. Finally, technology encourages a more inactive lifestyle, leading to health issues like obesity and poor fitness. In short, technology undoubtedly enhances our lives, but we must balance its use with real-life experiences and personal effort.
Thanks for your listening.

Paral. My heart stopped. What This was exactly what my dad had warned me about. The dangers of being alone, of wandering through stores without someone watching out for me. For a moment, panic gripped me, my mind racing through every possibility. I swallowed hard. “Who is it ” The woman gave a small nod toward the cleanser aisle. “That’ s him.” I turned my head cautiously, my pulse racing. And then I caught a glimpse of the familiar gray jacket. It was my dad.
Para2. I signed, shaking my head with a knowing smile. “That's my father,” I told the woman. She laughed softly and then walked away. I turned and made my way toward him. Iraised an eyebrow and asked, “Dad, were you following me ” He hesitated, then let out a small sigh. “I just wanted to make sure you were okay.” I should have been annoyed. But as I looked at him— the concern in his eyes—I realized something. This wasn't about him not trusting me. This was about love.
