Gyeongyun Lily Min spent the last seven months in a makeshift laboratory she set up in her parent’s garage, working hard to turn vibrations produced by sound waves in sports arenas into electrical energy.
The 17-year-old rising senior’s idea began to take shape when watching Disney’s Monsters, Inc. In the 2001 film, energy is generated from children’s screams. Without the cruelty, Gyeongyun thought, the concept could help meet the global demand for sustainable energy.
“I began to wonder if, in reality, with the help of piezoelectric effect (压电效应), we could use the abundant noise in environments like sports arenas to generate electricity.” explains Gyeongyun. Certain materials in the environment produce large amounts of mechanical energy as vibrations or shocks. This energy is largely wasted. However, with the piezoelectric effect, it is possible to change this energy into electric energy. Mixing her curiosity with her passion for science and innovation, the young student set out to explore a new way to meet global energy demands and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels.
Today, with over 60 percent of global electricity generated by fossil fuels, the world continues to be heavily dependent on non-renewable energy sources. According to a recent report by the World Nuclear Association, which promotes the global nuclear energy industry, over 40 percent of energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year are due to the burning of fossil fuels for electricity generation.
With her eco-friendly technology, Gyeongyun secured a spot as a finalist in this year’s Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest global science competition for high school students.
According to Gyeongyun, a sports arena is the suitable location for her project because it represents a unique environment with lots of noise of the cheering crowds, announcements and music.
“Although this technology is not yet realistically applicable due to the current limitations in the sensitivity and efficiency of piezoelectric materials, by advancing the quality of piezoelectric devices, we can unlock a new way of sustainable energy production, contributing to a cleaner and more sustainable future.” she says.
24. Gyeongyun thought of turning noise into electricity because of _________.
A. the encounter in the garage B. her curiosity about science
C. the inspiration from a Disney film D. her concern about the global problem
25. What’s the function of Para. 4
A. To highlight the profits of Gyeongyun’s project.
B. To illustrate the necessity of Gyeongyun’s project.
C. To indicate the importance of using less fossil fuels.
D. To demonstrate the influence of a worsening problem.
26. What can we imply from the last paragraph
A. The development should be sped up.
B. The technology has been widely applied.
C. Gyeongyun has overcome technology barriers.
D. Gyeongyun remains hopeful about his project.
27. What is the best title for the passage
A. Traffic Noise to Fuel: a New Discovery
B. A New Type of Global Energy Demand
C. We Can’t Use the Noise in Our Surroundings
D. Stadium Noise to Electricity: a Greener Future

In my last recent job, I taught academic writing to doctoral students at a technical college. My graduate students, many of whom were computer scientists, understood the mechanisms of generative AI better than I do. They recognized large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT as unreliable research tools. They knew that models are trained on existing data and therefore cannot produce novel research. However, that knowledge did not stop my students from relying heavily on generative AI. Several students admitted to drafting their research in note form and asking ChatGPT to write their articles.
As an experienced teacher, I reminded students that ChatGPT may change the meaning of a text when asked to revise, that it can produce biased and inaccurate information, that it does not generate stylistically strong writing and, for those grade-oriented students, that it does not result in A-level work. It did not matter. The students still used it.
Students who outsource their writing to AI lose an opportunity to think more deeply about their research. Using ChatGPT to complete assignments is bringing a forklift (叉车) into the weight room.
Generative AI is, in some ways, a democratizing (民主化的) tool. Many of my students were non-native speakers of English. Their writing frequently contained grammatical errors. Generative AI is effective at correcting grammar. However, the technology often changes vocabulary and changes meaning even when the only prompt is “fix the grammar.” As a result, I found myself spending many hours grading writing that I knew was generated by AI. That is, I found myself spending more time giving feedback to AI than to my students. So I quit.
The best educators will adapt to AI. Teachers will find ways to encourage students to think critically and know what is writing. However, those lessons require that students be willing to leave their comfort zone. Students must learn to move forward with faith in their own cognitive abilities as they write and revise their way into clarity. With few exceptions, my students were not willing to enter those uncomfortable spaces or remain there long enough to discover the power of writing.
28. What’s the problem with the writer’s students
A. Unfamiliarity with LLMs.
B. Heavy dependence on ChatGPT.
C. Failure to use existing novel research.
D. Unawareness of the technology drawbacks.
29. What does the underlined sentence mean
A. The students should refuse to use ChatGPT.
B. The students can use a forklift to improve their writing.
C. The students balance the development of body and mind.
D. The students will never improve their cognitive fitness that way.
30. What do we know about the author’s experience with grading AI-generated writing
A. The author enjoyed it as it was error-free.
B. The author found it a quick and easy task.
C. The author spent more time responding to AI.
D. The author preferred it over students’ original work.
31. What is a best solution according to the writer
A. Students learn to push through the discomfort.
B. Educators find ways to adapt to the technology.
C. Teachers move away from mechanical activities.
D. Students regain their faith in the technology change.
D
A puzzling primate (灵长类动物) might be the offspring (后代) of two distantly related species. And this monkey business is worrying scientists. Six years ago, tour guide Brenden Miles was traveling down the Kinabatangan River. He was on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo. Suddenly, he spotted an odd-looking primate, so he snapped a few photos. At first, he thought it could be a silvered leaf monkey with rare coloring. But then he noticed other details: The monkey’s tail was thicker than it should be, and its nose was long like that of a proboscis monkey.
Scientists have now studied those photos. They suspect that this mystery monkey is a hybrid (杂交物种). Sometimes closely related species hybridize. This happens only occasionally in the wild. But what was especially surprising in this case is that the monkey’s suspected parents a male proboscis monkey and a female silvered leaf monkey — are distant relatives. Scientists are concerned that this might signal that the creature’s parent species are in trouble.
“Changes to the parent monkeys’ habitat might explain a hybrid,” said Nadine Ruppert, a primatologist who studied the mystery monkey. Oil palm plantations have been expanding along the Kinabatangan River. As forests turn to farmland, wildlife habitats can be harmed or lost. “In some spots, the suspected parent monkey species have been squeezed into small patches of forest along that river,” Ruppert said. “Monkeys there could have to compete more for mates. In close quarters, the male of the bigger species can dominate. In this case, the proboscis male might easily displace males of the silvered leaf monkey.”
The mystery monkey has made people living in the area very excited. “The hybrid is gorgeous, but we don’t want to see more of them,” Ruppert said. “Both proboscis monkeys and silvered leaf monkeys may lack enough food and space to behave as they would naturally.” In Borneo and around the world, human activities and climate change are hurting animal habitats.
As natural habitats are lost, mating between different species might increase.
32. What is the second paragraph mainly about
A. The discovery of a rare species.
B. A photographer’s unusual adventure.
C. The new features of a strange primate.
D. Differences between two monkey species.
33. What can be inferred about the two suspected parent monkey species
A. They have to fight for oil palm fruit.
B. They were previously close relatives.
C. Proboscis monkeys are smaller in size.
D. Shared habitats influence their interaction.
34. What may cause hybridization according to the text
A. Natural disasters. B. Unsustainable farming.
C. Extensive deforestation. D. Competitions within the species.
35. How does Nadine Ruppert feel about the appearance of the “mystery monkey”
A. Puzzled. B. Concerned. C. Excited. D. Relieved.

On a gray Monday morning. Sarah hurried along the crowded sidewalk. She’d overslept and was already running late for work. The sky was overcast, and the air carried a damp chill, making her wish she’d worn a heavier coat. As she rushed toward her office building, she could feel the weight of the day pressing down on her-meetings, deadlines, and the usual chaos of a busy workweek.
Inside the office lobby (大堂), colleagues rushed past, their footsteps echoing against the marble floors, each one lost in their own world of deadlines and to-do lists. Some were busy typing on the keyboard. Some were talking to clients on the phones, gesturing wildly trying to explain a campaign strategy.
After swiping her ID card at the entrance, Sarah rushed toward the elevator. She pressed the button, impatiently tapping her foot as she waited. When the elevator arrived, she stepped inside, pressing the button for the 10th floor without a second thought. The doors closed, and she sighed, leaning against the wall as she took a sip of her coffee. The other passengers in the elevator were mostly strangers, their faces wearing the same tiredness that Sarah felt. A man in a suit stood nearby, checking his watch for the tenth time, while a woman in a business casual outfit carried a stack of papers, her eyes turning from one page to the next.
But then, the lights started to flash, and a strange noise replaced the usual hum (嘈杂声). Sarah’s stomach dropped as the elevator suddenly came to a stop, trapping her between floors. Panic surged through her, but she managed to stay calm. She pressed the emergency button and spoke into the intercom, her voice trembling as she explained her situation. The operator assured her that help was on the way but warned it might take time due to the malfunction (故障). As the minutes ticked by, Sarah’s phone signal began to fade.

Last week, in response to the national call for ecological civilization construction, our school organized student representatives to join a community-wide voluntary tree-planting activity.
At the site, the students were all fired up. With the help of community staff, they learned tree-planting skills and planted saplings carefully. Though tired, everyone was in high spirits. By day’s end, over a hundred saplings stood tall, turning the once bare land into a green area.
This activity is far more than just planting trees. It’s a lesson in environmental management. We now understand the vital role we play in safeguarding our planet and the immense power of unity. As young citizens, we’re ready to shoulder more responsibility and contribute to a greener, more beautiful world.
第二节(满分25分)
Several minutes passed, but no help came. Panic began to set in. Sarah tried to ring the emergency alarm again. Every second that passed was painful. “Help!!!” She screamed at the top of her lungs, trying to get someone’s attention but in vain. A wave of despair crept over her. Other passengers in the elevator also started to show signs of distress. The man in the suit began to pace back and forth. The woman with the stack of papers let out a small cry of frustration and fear, clutching her papers tightly to her chest. Time passed slowly as they waited for a miracle.
Bang! They were filled with renewed hope when they heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift. Relief flooded through them as they realized help was finally here. Moments later, the door was pulled open and fresh air rushed in. Letting out a sigh of relief, Sarah stepped out, her legs shaky as she took her first steps onto solid ground. Other passengers all exchanged brief, reassuring glances, as if sharing a silent acknowledgment that rescue was at hand. They thanked the firefighters before Sarah headed to her office, smiling. She knew her day would have its share of ups and downs, but she was ready to face them with hope and gratitude.

M: Hello, you’ve got through to Radio Wonders, (11) how may I help
W: Hi, I’m looking to buy my son a radio-controlled vehicle for his birthday and a friend of mine said your company came highly recommended. (12) I’ve looked on your website and it said to call for the latest offers. (11)
M: Okay, what kind of vehicle are you looking for (12)
W: I think he’d like a plane. (12)
M: I take it that your son has never flown one before
W: His uncle has one, (12) but I don’t think my son’s ever taken hold of the controls.
M: In that case, he’d probably be better off with one of our “beginner” models. ④They are strong and designed to not fall apart on the first flight if things go wrong!
W: How much are they
M: We’ve got a Spitfire on offer for $360 at the minute, or if you prefer something a little faster, there’s the Carbon Cub for $600. If you buy today, both models have a further fifty percent discount. (13)
④本句中first flight之间存在“不完全爆破”现象:first最后一个音为爆破音,flight第一个音为摩擦音/f/,两者遇到一起,前面的爆破音只做部分爆破,立即过渡到后面的摩擦音上去。

M: Please welcome Jade Green to the studio, (16) everybody. Jade is a writer and model who recently had her first book published called Anyone Can. (15) Jade, tell us a bit about your book.
W: Thanks for having me. Anyone Can is simply a book about my life as a fashion model, and its basic message is that anyone can do anything and achieve any dream.
M: Yes, it really shines a light on the modeling business. (15) Could you tell our listeners why your journey was slightly different to other models
W: Sure. If I ask you to picture a model in your head, you will probably see someone who is thin, good-looking with great skin, and all that stuff. Well, I’m not like that. I’m a size 16, which is typically associated with a person who is overweight.
M: And yet you have been very successful as a fashion model. (15) Why is that
W: Society has a very idealized vision of what we should all look like. There is always pressure for us all to look beautiful, especially on social media. But, in reality, we come in a variety of different shapes, sizes, and looks. I’m just a regular girl and I think that’s why people can relate to me. (16)
M: After the advertisement break, Jade will be reading a chapter from her book and answering your calls. (17)

Hi, my name’s Tim Peake. Back in 2015, I made history by becoming the first official British astronaut to go into space when I visited the International Space Station.
It all started with the breathtaking launch! (18) After six years of training, I’ve dealt with all the fear! The power of the rockets was incredible! Space starts at 100 km above Earth, and in just eight minutes and 48 seconds, we’d reached 200 km! From there, we went into an orbit (轨道) around Earth. Everything went quiet, and that’s when I first experienced weightlessness! It took another six hours to reach the ISS, which is 400 km above Earth.
Looking down on Earth, (19) there were lots of blues and greens of land and oceans, but also the oranges and yellows of the deserts. (19) I could make out glaciers (冰川), mountain ranges, and even volcanoes! When it’s daytime on Earth, there’s no sign of humans, but at night the planet glows with the lights of all the cities.
The ISS moves around the Earth every 92 minutes! At one point during the mission, I wanted to take some photos of the UK with the camera. We were over Brazil at the time, so I went for my lunch. When I came back, I’d missed Europe completely and was over China! (20)
It was an incredible experience.
