Section A
Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank.
In March of 2023, a strange video of Will Smith eating spaghetti was created using an early text-to-video AI tool called ModelScope and released on Reddit, a popular content-sharing platform. The technology, while impressive, was deeply limited in its ability to accurately represent the text hint some users even described the video as “nightmarish”. Little did they know that a year later text-to-video AI would be creating videos so realistic (1)__________ they would blur (模糊)the line between the digital and the real.
If you’ve ever used a text-to-image generative AI tool like DALL-E, you’ll see that text-to-video tools work in a similar way. The user provides a hint, like “cat swimming in a fish tank,” and the tool creates a video (2)__________ (base) on everything it knows about cats, water, fish and the physics of how they might interact. The tool makes use of what are known as “visual patches (补丁)”, building blocks of data (3)__________ help the AI to understand how everything in the scene should interact and progress, frame by frame.
Tools that are based on a spread system, like OpenAI’s Sora, are trained (4)__________ (recognize) objects so they can improve images by deleting the incorrect visual patches. This process could be compared to a worker (5)__________ (melt) raw gold multiple times in order to remove all its useless elements.
One of the remarkable things about OpenAI’s Sora is that it can generate content in a variety of styles. When the project (6)__________ (disclose) last February, OpenAI claimed that “Sora can generate videos up to a minute long while maintaining visual quality and according to the user’s hint.”
But there are limits of Sora’s capabilities. As OpenAI shows in some demo videos, the physics of how objects interact in the videos doesn’t always make sense. Sometimes people or objects (7)__________ (mix) together, transform into other things, disappear or appear out of nowhere. But if the technology can appear suddenly from the strange spaghetti video to (8)__________ it is now in a year, these limitations probably won’t last long.
Besides OpenAI’s Sora, Google has two products called Lumiere and VideoPoet, but like Sora, they (9)__________ not be open for public use yet. These tools are still being seriously tested and improved to ensure that people can’t use them to produce inappropriate content or break laws. In the meantime, you can still experiment with simple text-to-video tools (10)__________ in video AI, a creation and education in mind. It’s perfect for creating online courses, “explainer” videos or providing visuals for a short story.

Reading Comprehension
Section A
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Unemployment is a significant problem in many developing countries. Without steady work, individuals __21__ to rise out of poverty, and the community as a whole also misses out. Many unemployed people could have done much good through their labor if they had been given the opportunity to contribute. __22__, without opportunities for reasonable work, young people sometimes turn to crime and violence in order to provide for themselves. Thus, giving people opportunities to work is essential for the community's well-being.
Unemployment creates many different problems for communities. Encouraging people to start businesses is an effective way to reduce unemployment, and this can be done in several ways.
Education plays a vital role in __23__ people for certain jobs, but many young people find that even if they are __24__, the jobs are just not there. This was the situation that Rwandan entrepreneur Noel Nizeyimana faced. When he graduated from university with a degree in soil and environmental science, he sent out application after application but received no job offers, so he turned to creating his own business. With three of his colleagues, he founded Greencare Rwanda Ltd., a company that transforms waste into products that can be used for various purposes. __25__, one of the company's programs processes waste and turns it into organic fertilizer used by local farmers. The company has also __26__ into plastic recycling and produces paving materials from sand and plastic. Thus, Greencare Rwanda is providing materials for other industries as well.
Greencare Rwanda Ltd was able to __27__ the ground largely due to funds it received from the UN Youth Joint Programme. This program is a(n) __28__ to reach the UN's sustainable development goal of "decent work and economic growth." The assistance __29__ helped Greencare, which now produces 400 tons of fertilizer and 2,560 square meters of paving materials per year. It also employs 25 people, which shows that helping people start businesses provides work for more than just the person who receives the funds.
All this raises the question of what more can be done to __30__ young people to start their own businesses. Providing funds to cover the initial costs, as the UN Youth Joint Programme did for Nizeyimana, is certainly important as the starting costs for businesses can be __31__ high. Governments are sometimes hesitant to provide funds to startups because success is not __32__. Starting a business is risky, and nobody wants to waste money, but experts __33__ that governments should not impose (强加) too many requirements. Different regions will need different __34__, so trying to impose a set of one size fits all requirements can restrict growth rather than promote it.
While there are other ways to address unemployment, __35__ young business owners is one of the most effective — especially when those businesses produce goods that genuinely help local communities.

One hundred and eight years ago, the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank to the bottom of the ocean. It was the most luxurious passenger ship of its time and thought to be unsinkable. Sadly, that proved to be false and more than 1,500 of the approximately 2,200 people onboard lost their lives.
One reason for the tremendous loss of life was the lack of sufficient lifeboats on the ship. The Titanic had 20 of these small boats, which were meant to be used in an emergency. The boats could carry between 40 and 65 people each. All together, they could hold only 1,178 people, far too few to save all of the passengers and crew.
After the Titanic hit the iceberg, an order was given to launch the boats. Many passengers didn’t take the order seriously. Instead of responding to it, they decided to stay indoors rather than go out onto the freezing cold deck. Those passengers who took the order seriously began to get into the boats. Some of the boats were lowered into the ocean before they were full. Two of the boats floated away empty when the ship began to sink.
In 1987, movie producer John Joslyn and a team dove to the site of the Titanic’s wreckage in a $20 million submersible (潜水器). They filmed for hundreds of hours. Some of the film was later used in a documentary about the Titanic.
Joslyn dreamed of a place where visitors could experience much of what those on board the Titanic actually saw, touched and encountered. Joslyn wanted a “living theater” with guests as part of the experience. In 2010, his dream came true with the construction of Titanic Museum Attraction (TMA). Located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, TMA is the world’s largest permanent Titanic museum with over 400 Titanic artifacts (文物).

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Andreas and Finn Schulz,
I am writing this letter to give you notice that we will require you to leave our rental unit at 7 Banelle Drive, Unit 1602 on February 1, 2025. This notice gives you 4.5 months’ notice, which is more than the state’s required 3 months of notice for repairs.
During this time, we will be installing a new kitchen, adding a washer and dryer in the apartment and upgrading the bathrooms. Additionally, we will be changing the floors and painting the entire unit.
We expect the repairs will take at least four months, if not longer. There have been some supply issues recently, so there may be delays because we can’t get some materials.
However, we would like to know if you would like to return to the apartment after the repairs are done. Of course, we know that many things can change between now and next year when everything will hopefully be ready.
If you know for sure that you won’t be renting our place again (and we will have to charge an additional 15%), could you please let us know immediately You can always change your mind when we list the place again for rental.
You have been wonderful renters and we hope that you will want to return and rent our place again. We would love to see you enjoy the new additions and upgrades!

Every day we are surrounded by large amounts of information, much of which is given by people who want to shape our decisions. So, we need to evaluate the information and determine how we should respond.
Evaluating information and arguments requires critical thinking, the ability to think clearly and see how ideas are connected. Like any skill, critical thinking can be learned, and the best way to learn it is by practicing.
You cannot evaluate an argument that you do not understand. Thus, the first step to critical thinking must always be listening. You may need to ask questions to clarify the person’s claims. Ask them to define their key terms, especially words with multiple meanings.
Once you understand what the person is saying, then you can consider whether it is true. The most important question is whether the facts they state are actually true. You can try to figure this out by considering the source of the facts and whether the facts line up with what you already know about the topic. If there is a conflict, you must then discover whether your original understanding was incorrect or whether the new claims are wrong.
It’s also possible to draw incorrect conclusions from correct facts. Often this comes from mistakes in logic, so learning about common logical fallacies (谬论) and how to recognize them can help. Also consider whether there could be another explanation for the facts besides the one you’ve been given.
Critical thinking also involves examining people’s motivations and assumptions. For example, a salesman will present facts that are selected to convince you to buy what he is selling. He will leave out facts that don’t help him reach that goal. Assumptions can likewise affect people’s claims since people want to confirm what they already believe. It is necessary that you recognize these factors to predict when someone else’s statements might not be accurate or complete.
Finally, critical thinking requires examining your own beliefs and assumptions as well. Poking holes in other people’s arguments can be necessary, but you must acknowledge the possibility that your own beliefs are wrong. Your own assumptions and motivations may affect your thinking without you realizing it. By critically examining both your own and other people’s opinions, you can understand the way the world works and make decisions in light of the truth.
According to the passage, which one of the following is TRUE
A. The majority of information given to us is actually to shape our minds.
B. Critical thinking is usually learned by practicing, like any other skills.
C. Only when you fully understand one’s claims, can you make a right evaluation.
D. A conflict between the original understanding and a new one is critical thinking.
What is the purpose of the example of a salesman given in the passage
A. To illustrate the important function of critical thinking
B. To confirm the difference of people’ motivations and assumptions
C. To convince people to buy the product mentioned in the passage
D. To warn people to pay special attention to the facts given
The expression “Poking holes in other people’s arguments” in the last paragraph probably means __________.
A. Finding out others’ faults B. Evaluating others’ opinions
C. Criticizing others’ points of view D. Supporting others’ ideas
What can we conclude from the passage
A. Drawing incorrect decisions from facts depends on its logic.
B. Afact may sometimes guide us to make a wrong decision.
C. Critical thinking is connected with one’s own beliefs and assumptions.
D. Without logic knowledge, critical thinking is impossible to occur.
Section C
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.
A. The point is not to teach anything but simply to provide a study companion. B. The creator becomes a study partner, which reduces the isolation many students feel. C. That is why SWM comes into being, and becomes more and more popular these days. D. That’s where Study with Me (SWM) videos come into play. E. Silent videos can help students overcome the feelings of isolation and loneliness. F. This cuts down on their commute (通勤) to libraries or established study rooms.
In the world of social media, people often create videos to share their knowledge about a series of topics, from piano lessons to computer repair. As a result, when someone is seeking an answer to a question, they often turn to YouTube for an answer. It stands to reason that those who have trouble with studying would also consult YouTube for a solution.
47 In Korea, the popular videos are called “gongbang,” which means Study Broadcast. In Japan, they’re called “benkyoudouga,” and in America and other countries, they’re called Study with Me. No matter what their names are, many viewers have jumped on the SWM bandwagon.
Students create and share videos of themselves studying earnestly, usually for an exam. Many of the videos are shot in a quiet room. The camera often focuses on a clean desk with a tidy display of books, notebooks, a computer and a timer. Throughout most of the videos, no words are spoken; the focus is on the creator as he or she studies. 48
Are SWM videos just “lazy content,” or are they beneficial Financial site Business Insider says this type of video “serves a real purpose, helping people focus.”
The Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology performed research on Study with Me videos and discovered several benefits. First, people can set up quiet study areas in their homes to view the videos. 49 Next, observing the diligence of the creator often motivates viewers, especially those who have trouble studying. Finally, viewer gain emotional support by knowing that they are part of a group with perhaps thousands others, all working toward the same goal. Some viewers have said that Study with Me “satisfies the need for belonging and social contact” by providing a sense of companionship. 50
Some SWM livestreams, where viewers can chat with each other in real time, feel like online study groups. This helps create a satisfactory study environment where students — even those who struggle — can find the inspiration they need to stay on task.
Summary Writing
Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.
51.
As soon as they walk into a room, tall people command attention. They also enjoy some advantages, such as being considered attractive (especially for men). Tall people also tend to have higher status jobs and consequently earn more money than others. It’s no wonder that many young people are concerned about growing as tall as possible. There are many myths (迷思) about growth and height in circulation (流通), though, so let’s examine them and find out the truth.
Myth: People stop growing during puberty (青春期).
Fact: Boys can still grow even in their early 20s though both girls and boys grow more during childhood and
puberty. Girls tend to grow more at younger ages than boys. But boys catch up and usually pass girls by the
time they reach adulthood.
Myth: A person’s height is completely determined by genes.
Fact: Genes do play a role, determining about 60 to 80 percent of a person’s height. But the rest is influenced by
environmental factors. Nutrition during childhood is the most important. Without enough vitamins, minerals,
and protein, children do not become as tall as their genes would allow.
Myth: Caffeine stops children from growing.
Fact: In moderation, caffeine does not restrict growth. A child or teenager can have a cup of coffee or tea with no
ill effects on height. However, too much caffeine use might restrict growth because it prevents sleep, which
is when most growth happens.
Myth: Stretching or hanging upside down can make you taller.
Fact: It’s not clear whether this is true or not. Some evidence indicates that stretching can increase height while
one is growing. But this doesn’t work once one is fully grown. Hanging upside down makes one taller
temporarily, but this may not make a lasting difference. Understanding how growth happens can help people
make decisions. For young people who are still growing, a healthy diet is the best way for them to maximize
their height.
