Running for a Dream
I will never forget that November day. It was hotter than normal. This was the day my father and I had waited so long for, because we had been working towards this race for three years. Dozens of familiar faces flashed across my view. They had come for me. I saw worry and excitement on my father’s face. Then the race began!
For the first two and a half miles, I felt great. I had never before been so ___13___ for something. The weeks leading up to the race were filled with controlled practices and a strict diet. My friends hadn’t seen me in weeks, but they understood the sacrifice (牺牲) required to make my dream a reality. As in all of my races, I didn’t ___14___ out in the front. I loved the pleasure of passing people as my strength overtook (超过) their speed.
Then without warning, my strength began to decrease. Neck and neck with one of my greatest competitors, I could see the finish line. I had begun the final dash (冲刺) into success when my knees became weak and my legs gave way. Nothing I could do would make them ___15___ my weight.
I watched as runners rushed by me. Although I knew my dreams of victory were destroyed, I had to finish the race. However, my legs hurt badly. With all of the ___16___ left in me, I got on my hands and knees and crawled (爬), inch by inch, across the finish line. Voices, both ___17___ and familiar, cheered me on. They gave me the courage to keep going until the very end.
The doctors were there in seconds, but my eyes searched the crowd for him. There was only one person I wanted to talk to. I whispered, “I’m so sorry, Dad. I’m so sorry I ___18___ you.” He looked at me, saying, “You could a never disappoint me. Sometimes these things just happen. All that matters is that you did your best.”
“But we worked so ___19___. What about our dream ” He reached over for my hand and said, “Don’t you know that you are my dream and it has come true ”
It wasn’t long before my running shoes were back on, marking a new path for my journey. I learned that all of the miles, the tears, the sweat, and the pain my dad and I experienced together were not for a (an) ___20___. What I realized, though, was that to him, I was the greatest prize he had ever won.

14. A. look B. move C. come D. start

“See you at Open House tonight, Amy,” Evelyn shouted from the school bus window. “Don’t forget to ask your mom if I can come over tomorrow!”
“OK!” I called back. I wished I could feel excited about my first Open House at my new school, but I was worried. What would other kids say when they found out my parents can’t hear
And I wanted Evelyn to visit but then she’d see how different my house was. My parents use a video phone so they can use sign language to communicate with callers. We also have a light on the wall that flashes when the phone or doorbell rings. Would Evelyn think my house was strange
That night, when Dad drove us to the brightly lit school, it looked different. As we walked down the hallway to my classroom, we stopped in front of the bulletin board in the hall. “Look at Amy’s picture!” Mom said, too loud. She does that when she’s excited because she can’t hear herself. Some older kids turned to stare (凝视) at us and I wanted to hide.
I led my family into my classroom and looked around. Other kids and parents were there, but I didn’t see Evelyn. Ms. Jennings walked over to us. I introduced my teacher to my family and let her know about my parents’ deafness.
“Oh,” she said. “Well, how do you say ‘Welcome!’ in sign language ”
“Like this,” I swept my open right hand in toward my body, palm up.
She repeated the gesture.
“Thank you” Mom said, smiling. “It’s nice to meet you.”
Ms. Jennings looked surprised, “You speak very well,” she said. Mom nodded, “I lost my hearing as a child after I’d learned to talk. Amy’s father was born deaf. He can talk too, but he’s shy about his voice.” Dad smiled in agreement.
Some of my classmates were watching us and whispering (低语). Then I noticed Evelyn and her mom standing by the door.
“I sit over there,” I told my family and quickly walked toward my desk.
“Hi, Amy,” Evelyn said suddenly. “I didn’t know your parents are deaf.”
“Yeah,” I couldn’t think of anything else to say.
“And you can talk to them with your hands That’s so cool.”
“You think so ” I said with relief (宽慰).
Evelyn nodded, “It’s like a secret code. Would you teach me some words sometime ”
I smiled, “Of course. If you come over tomorrow, we can practise some sign language then.”
24. How is Amy’s house different
A. It is brightly lit with many lights. B. It is fixed up in a fun way.
C. It has special tools for deaf people. D. It has strange furniture.
25. Why did Amy want to hide at the Open House
A. She couldn’t find Evelyn.
B. Some older kids were unkind.
C. Her picture was on the board for all to see.
D. Her mom’s loud voice attracted unwanted attention.
26. What made Amy feel relieved
A. Evelyn finally promised to visit her house.
B. Her teacher learned sign language successfully.
C. Evelyn didn’t mind she was from a special family.
D. Her classmates changed their attitude toward her mom.

Have you ever bought a new car and started noticing the exact color and model of car everywhere Has that type of car just become popular in your city Were they there before Or are you just going crazy
You’re not going crazy. The reason you are now just noticing them is what psychologists call “priming”. Basically, the cars were always there. You just didn’t recognize them consciously (有意识地). However, when that certain model of car becomes part of your conscious thinking, you start “automatically” (自动地) recognizing all of the other cars that are the same, because you are already “primed” to do so.
The priming effect takes many forms. In one study, students were asked to walk around a room for 5 minutes very slowly—about three times slower than how they normally walk. After this brief experience, the participants were much quicker to recognize words related to old age, such as forgetful, old, and lonely. Reciprocal priming effects tend to produce a coherent (连贯的) reaction: if you are primed to think of old age, you would be likely to act old, and acting old would strengthen the thought of old age. This research shows that the way we think influences the way we act, and the way we act influences the way we think.
A similar conclusion was reached by the American psychologist William James a century ago, but he stressed the effect on feeling. “Actions seem to follow feeling, but in fact actions and feeling go together; and by controlling the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly control the feeling, which is not. Thus, the path to cheerfulness, should our cheerfulness be lost, is to sit up cheerfully and to act and speak as if cheerfulness were already there.”
So, that’s it. If you want to be happy, just sit up and act happy. Based on these scientific findings, we can use certain priming effects to help make ourselves consistently (持续地) happier.
One thing we have in common is our ability to think, and thus feel. Pleasant thoughts, particularly thoughts and feelings of gratitude (感激), have been proven to produce the chemicals that make us feel happy. When we purposefully go through and think about the things, we’re grateful for and try hard to feel as much gratitude as we can, we are flooding our mind with the “happy chemicals”. Furthermore, by consciously thinking, feeling and expressing gratitude, we will not only be happier in the moment, we will be “primed” to recognize the things in our life to value. Each time this happens, the “happy chemicals” will be produced. Do this every day and we will become consistently happier. This makes up for the momentary happiness we gain from eating chocolate or buying new clothes. More than that, combining thoughts of gratitude with happy acts like smiling and laughing will have an additional positive effect on our state of mind.
27. Which of the following is an example of the priming effect
A. Walking much faster after attending a lecture about old age.
B. Raising money for the poor after seeing pictures of cute cats.
C. Learning about various types of cars after buying the first private car.
D. Completing SO P as SOUP rather than SOAP after seeing the word EAT.
28. What does the underlined word “reciprocal” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Related. B. Two-way. C. Well-rounded. D. Opposite.
29 What will the writer probably agree with
A. Eating or shopping leads to consistent feelings of happiness.
B. Our will has greater control over emotions than over actions.
C. Practicing gratitude often prepares us for long-term happiness.
D. Happy chemicals make us think about the things we’re grateful for.
D
Envy (忌妒) isn’t always a sin (罪恶). Often, it’s a sign.
The feeling of envy hits at many moments these days: When a friend buys a car while you can’t because of expensive costs or when a neighbor shares good news about a successful job while your career (事业) stays the same.
Envy is universal, but we don’t have to feel ashamed of it. In fact, analyzing our envy to understand what we really want can help us figure out next steps in our careers and personal lives.
There are two types of envy. Malicious envy arrives with anger, frustration and a desire to take an advantage away from another person. Benign envy, on the other hand, is when you wish you were in someone else’s position but don’t feel the need to harm their success. That envy can spark self-reflection and the motivation to set new goals. Research showed that marathon runners who experience benign envy also set higher goals for themselves, and tend to run faster in their races.
Instead of hiding your envy, start by asking who makes you feel admiration and jealousy (嫉妒). Changing your perspective (视角) helps you view someone as a model to follow rather than a competitor to beat, and helps you focus on what you can control, says Sara Protasi, a philosophy professor. This shift in perspective is particularly important because research shows that feelings of being less successful usually appear when the other person is similar to us, which is why envy toward a classmate or a neighbor feels stronger than toward a celebrity (名人).
Get curious about facts, rather than opinions. Research their path or ask them for advice. Dig into their experience, you may find methods to learn new skills. For example, Gill Le Fevre, a 51-year-old marketing professional, felt envious when her relative landed a new job. It wasn’t the job itself she wanted but the sense of direction and achievement her cousin had. This realization encouraged her to complete a master’s degree while continuing her career. “Envy was the elbow in the ribs,” says Le Fevre.
If you cannot stop thinking about comparisons and they’re not helping you move forward, try writing them down. “Spend 20 minutes thinking about envy and write down your thoughts.” said Robert L. Leahy, a cognitive therapy expert. Look for hidden clues in your writing. If you’re envious of someone at the gym, is it their hard work, positive attitude or stylish workout clothes sparking that emotion
If you still feel jealous of others’ achievements, consider broadening your goals beyond work or study. Spending more time with family or pets, taking walks and improving your fitness can all be worthwhile goals. “The envious person thinks about life as a race or a ladder, but that’s not what life is,” said Leahy.
30. According to the passage, which of the following is true
A. People are more likely to envy others when sharing similarities.
B. Malicious envy can encourage people to set higher goals in races.
C. Research into your envy and competitors ensure your achievement.
D. Hiding envy is considered to be a good way to avoid feelings of shame.
31. Why is the example of Gill Le Fevre mentioned in the passage
A. To tell how envy can lead to positive personal and career growth.
B. To stress the importance of finding some methods to learn new skills.
C. To highlight the value of taking higher degrees for career development.
D. To show how changing careers can help one find greater meaning in life.
32. What does Leahy mean by saying “The envious person thinks about life as a race or a ladder, but that’s not what life is’’
A. People caught by envy will fall from the ladder of life.
B. What matters in life are not comparisons with others.
C. Life is more important than taking part in a race.
D. Envy can be a ladder towards a successful life.
33. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. Broaden Your Goals with the Help of Envy B. Stop Damaging Relationships over Envy
C. Run Away from Envy and Be Yourself D. Turn Envy from Sin to Superpower
第二部分
四、阅读表达(共10分,34-36题每题2分,37题4分)
Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing faster than anyone expected. For tech enthusiasts (爱好者), the possibilities are endlessly exciting, but some people feel worried about the new technology. The NSPCC, a charity that works to keep children safe, has called on the government to do more to protect children from AI software. A report by the charity has found that children who use AI can be exposed to (容易接触) content that makes them feel upset. There were also examples of young people using it to be unkind to others. According to a survey, 78% of the UK public think the government should conduct (实施) more safety checks on generative AI software and include rules protecting children in AI-related laws.
Supporters think AI is important technology and children need to understand how it works so that they can use it when they’re older. In ICT lessons at school, pupils learn how to operate other types of software, so they should know how to use AI too. Some adults use AI at work to make certain tasks easier, such as writing an email or planning a meeting. If children were allowed to use AI, they could try using it for their schoolwork. The AI software might inspire an idea to help them get started on a piece of homework or school project. It doesn’t just have to be used for school or work-related reasons. In a 2024 report by Ofcom, a group overseeing the UK’ s communication services, about Internet usage, 63% of eight to 15-year-olds reported using generative AI tools “for fun”.
While there are some problems that should be considered, generative AI is still quite a new technology and it’s being updated all the time. It’s better to keep children away from it for now. This will give adults the chance to prove that it’s safe to use and for the government to put tighter rules in place. Besides, AI can expose children to content that makes them or another child upset or worried. It’s a very powerful tool and they shouldn’t be allowed to use it. The software isn’t perfect and it can give users wrong information. A study last year by Purdue University in the US found that ChatGPT gave wrong information 52% of the time when answering computer programming questions. The programmers involved in the study didn’t notice the wrong answers 39% of the time.
So, considering the benefits AI can bring to children’s learning and creativity, as well as the potential risks such as exposure to harmful content and misinformation, what do you think Should children be allowed to use AI
34. How may AI make children feel, according to the NSPCC report

I’m Li Hua from Class 1, Grade 9. For the foreign students visiting our school, I’d suggest a workshop on paper cutting. A teacher can first introduce its history and artistic value. Then we can help them to make paper cuttings. This activity will give them an opportunity to have a try at a traditional Chinese art form. What’s more, when they take these paper cuttings back to their home country and give them to their families as gifts, more people there may enjoy the beauty of Chinese culture.

【答案】例文
How I Go Green
Environmental issues like air pollution caused by vehicles and plastic waste that harms oceans worry me deeply. To reduce my impact, I’ve adopted daily habits that combine simplicity and effectiveness.
For example, I always carry a reusable bottle to avoid buying plastic ones, and I recycle paper rigorously. Additionally, I persuade my family to walk or cycle for short trips instead of driving, which cuts carbon emissions. What’s more, turning off unused lights has become my routine because saving energy matters.
Though these acts seem small, they collectively make a difference. I’ve learned that protecting Earth starts with individual actions, no matter how minor they appear.
