Shortly after Gustav Klimt, a renowned Austrian symbolist painter, died in 1918, a photograph was taken in the artist’s studio. It shows two paintings, each displayed on an easel: Lady with Fan and the unfinished work The Bride.
Lady with Fan was the last painting Klimt worked on during the year 1917. While most of his portraits paint society ladies, Klimt probably chose an unknown model here. In the appealing presentation of this unidentified woman, probably a dancer, she appears self-confident and assured. With her head held high, her shoulders exposed, and her bare breast covered by a fan, she gazes out beyond the viewer.
Klimt began studying East-Asian art as early as the 1890s. Initially, he was primarily interested in Japanese art, but in later years turned to Chinese, Korean, Persian, or Indian creative styles. Klimt adopted not only decorative elements from the art of these countries but also compositional aspects. He studied typical color schemes, for example, and transferred them into his paintings.
Lady with Fan was especially influenced by Chinese and Japanese art. Wrapped in a Chinese robe, the lady hides behind a decorated fan. The yellow wallpaper in the background features several characteristic patterns that are symbols of good fortune in East-Asian art: the Chinese phoenix(fenghuang), a crane, and the lotus flower. Another reference to Japanese painting is the lady with a fan herself: bijin-ga, Japanese woodblock portraits of beautiful celebrities.
Like Schiele, Kokoschka, and other artists from his circle, Klimt was a member of the Vienna Institute for Cultural Research. Founded in 1915, the institution advocated a peaceful, equal world culture and rejected the idea of the cultural superiority of the West, a concept widespread at the time. Klimt’s paintings convey his belief: European and Asian pictorial traditions are brought together in equal measure to form a harmonious symbiosis(共生).

Nearly a year ago, NASA announced that a rock spotted on Mars by its Perseverance rover contained some of the best signs yet that ancient microbial (微生物的) life may have once existed on the Red Planet. The rock provides clear evidence for water, organic matter, and chemical reactions that could provide an energy source, Laurie Leshin, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which operates Perseverance, posted on the social media platform X. “This is the kind of discovery you hope for — where mind-bending observations make your heart beat just a little faster,” she added.
Catch your breath, everyone. There are a lot of maybes that won’t be resolved anytime soon, if ever. And there’s a long history of Martian rocks getting some of the life on our planet a little too excited.
Perhaps the most famous Martian rock is Allan Hills 84001, a meteorite (陨石) discovered in Antarctica. In a 1996 Science paper, researchers suggested it held nannofossils (纳米化石) of bacteria. The news spread far and wide and even led to a congratulatory speech by then-President Bill Clinton. The debate continues, but most researchers today believe the fossil like features arose without life. Similar news has followed rocks found by earlier Mars rovers, including Curiosity, which, with its onboard chemical lab, has detected all sorts of organic molecules during its long trip in Gale crater.
Perseverance lacks such an onboard lab. Its job is to drill rocks and put them in capsules that could eventually be returned to Earth for detailed study. Compared with Curiosity’s, its instruments are more limited. Still, they provided enough information to be excited about the Cheyava Falls rock it just drilled.
Running through the rock are white veins of calcium sulfate — minerals that spark out of water. Scans by a rover instrument also indicate the rock contains organic compounds. Such carbon-bearing molecules are essential building blocks of life, but they can also be formed by nonbiological processes. Of most scientific significance were mineral “leopard spots” in the rock, millimeter-size whitish spots ringed by black material, which seem to contain iron and phosphate (磷酸盐). On Earth, such spotting can form when organic molecules react with hematite, or rusted iron. These reactions, in turn, can fuel microbial life.
Although there is no doubt about the scientific value of the new discovery, the immediate announcement about the rock by JPL has raised some eyebrows.

Shortly after Gustav Klimt, a renowned Austrian symbolist painter, died in 1918, a photograph was taken in the artist’s studio. It shows two paintings, each displayed on an easel: Lady with Fan and the unfinished work The Bride.
Lady with Fan was the last painting Klimt worked on during the year 1917. While most of his portraits paint society ladies, Klimt probably chose an unknown model here. Nearly a year ago, NASA announced that a rock spotted on Mars by its Perseverance rover contained some of the best signs yet that ancient microbial (微生物的) life may have once existed on the Red Planet. The rock provides clear evidence for water, organic matter, and chemical reactions that could provide an energy source, Laurie Leshin, director of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), which operates Perseverance, posted on the social media platform X. “This is the kind of discovery you hope for — where mind-bending observations make your heart beat just a little faster,” she added.

The news spread far and wide and even led to a congratulatory speech by then-President Bill Clinton. The debate continues, but most researchers today believe the fossil like features arose without life. Similar news has followed rocks found by earlier Mars rovers, including Curiosity, which, with its onboard chemical lab, has detected all sorts of organic molecules during its long trip in Gale crater.
Perseverance lacks such an onboard lab. Its job is to drill rocks and put them in capsules that could eventually be returned to Earth for detailed study. Compared with Curiosity’s, its instruments are more limited. Still, they provided enough information to be excited about the Cheyava Falls rock it just drilled.
Running through the rock are white veins of calcium sulfate — minerals that spark out of water. Scans by a rover instrument also indicate the rock contains organic compounds. Such carbon-bearing molecules are essential building blocks of life, but they can also be formed by nonbiological processes. Of most scientific significance were mineral “leopard spots” in the rock, millimeter-size whitish spots ringed by black material, which seem to contain iron and phosphate (磷酸盐). On Earth, such spotting can form when organic molecules react with hematite, or rusted iron. These reactions, in turn, can fuel microbial life.
Although there is no doubt about the scientific value of the new discovery, the immediate announcement about the rock by JPL has raised some eyebrows.
