Origin of the Lantern Festival
This festival dates back to the Han Dynasty, with a history of more than 2,000 years. Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty ordered big ceremonies (仪式) on the 15th day of the first Chinese lunar month to worship (祭祀) Taiyi, the God of Heaven in ancient times, for good weather and health. When Buddhism (佛教) was introduced into China, the emperors began to worship Buddha by lighting lanterns in the palace and temples to dispel darkness. Until the Tang Dynasty, common people were allowed to light lanterns on this day. Gradually, the Lantern Festival developed as a folk festival.

Stilt-walking (踩高跷), drumming, dragon and lion dancing are all traditional activities of this festival. A typical food on this day is yuanxiao (also known as tangyuan), the sweet-tasting glutinous rice (糯米) balls, which means the reunion of the whole family.
