Many scientists believe that animals have feelings similar to humans. Even though there are different opinions about how animals have feelings, their actions show that they can feel pleasure, sadness, and excitement.
Whales are very smart and can show sadness. In 2018, a whale mother was seen carrying her dead baby through the water for several weeks. There are also stories that show whales can feel sympathy (同情) for different kinds of animals. For example, they sometimes help other animals by lifting them on their backs to keep them safe from danger.
When an old elephant dies, its family often stays with the body for a long time, touching it gently. This behavior suggests that elephants can feel sadness. Elephants also show sympathy by protecting other animals, such as monkeys.
Octopuses seem to experience joy. There are many examples where an octopus gets excited when it sees people it knows well, coming close to them and touching them.
The way animals show their feelings is very interesting. Even with all our knowledge, there is still much we do not understand about what goes on inside the minds of animals.
56. Why do whales lift some animals on their backs according to the passage
A. To play with them. B. To get more pleasure.
C. To kill them for some food. D. To keep them safe from danger.
57. Which animals feel happy when they see people they know well
A. Whales. B. Monkeys. C. Octopuses. D. Elephants.
58. What is the writer’s purpose of writing the last paragraph
A. To explain why scientists study animal behavior.
B. To compare the feelings of different kinds of animals.
C. To show there is still something unknown about animal minds.

Maggie, Travis and Lucy’s science teacher set a special test for them. They had to work out different kinds of problems within limited (有限的) time to get out of a locked room.
For the past hour, Maggie, Travis and Lucy had been locked inside a room that seemed like a mad scientist’s laboratory. Together they decoded (破译) a secret language and solved a difficult maths problem.
The last challenge, however, stopped them. The key to the door was trapped in a block of ice.
“We have to melt the ice,” Lucy said.
“But there’s nothing hot here!” Maggie complained.
Travis pulled off his sweatshirt and covered the ice. “This keeps me warm,” he reasoned.
A few minutes passed by, but the ice didn’t melt.
“Isn’t cloth an insulator (隔热材料) ” Lucy asked. She tried to remember what she had learned in science class. “Heat always flows from warm objects to cold ones. The heat in the air will finally melt the ice, but we need to find something that will help heat move from the air to the ice more quickly.”
“What about glass ” Maggie asked.
“Glass is also an insulator. It keeps heat from moving,” Lucy said. Then she noticed a large metal tray (金属托盘) across the room. “This might work!”
Lucy put the block of ice onto the tray. Everybody’s eyes moved between the clock and the ice. Would they be able to free the key in time
At last, the key lay in the water on the tray. The three friends rushed out of the room in the last minute.
“We made it!” Travis cheered. “Good thing you paid attention in science class!”

There are different traditions in different places, when naming a child.
In many European cultures, parents choose their child’s name according to the names of relatives within their families. For example, in Italy, children are traditionally named after their grandparents. The parents generally use the father’s parents’ names first. If they have more children, then they will use the mother’s parents’ names.
Traditionally in some Asian countries, a child’s grandfather chooses the child’s name. The child’s name is chosen to affect (影响) the child’s character. For example, names may be based on (基于) a connection to certain things such as fire, water, earth, wood, or metal.
In certain African cultures, when a child is born plays a large part in choosing the child’s name. In Ghana’s Akan culture, the day a child is born decides the child’s name. But each day has different names for boys and girls. For example, a boy born on Friday is named Kofi, while a girl born on the same day is named Afua.
No matter where the name comes from, it is the child’s first gift in life. The name reflects (反映) something about a child’s culture. For that reason, all names should be valued and respected.
