Blake Miller is a well-known and busy businessman. One day, he managed to spare some time and went with his father to a fancy (高档的) restaurant for a meal.
When they walked into the restaurant, they heard beautiful violin music. A violinist was standing in a corner of the restaurant, playing with all her heart. The customers in the restaurant were all lost in the wonderful music.
While enjoying the music, Miller’s memories came back like a tide (潮水). He remembered that he had once been crazy about the violin. Back then, he would spend a lot of time practicing the violin every day. Every time he played, he could feel the joy and satisfaction deep in his heart. However, as time went by, he gradually devoted (投入) his energy to business and had to give up his beloved violin in order to work on his career (事业).
At this moment, he couldn’t help but say to his father, “If I had kept up with the violin, maybe I would be playing here now.” “Yes, my child,” his father nodded, his eyes were full of love and understanding. Then his father continued slowly, “But in that case, you wouldn’t be dining here now.”
Life is full of different choices. People can take completely different paths and live quite different lives. But everyone should keep this in mind: There is no “if” in life and every choice has its meaning. The best thing to do is to value what we have in the present moment.

A. School time. B. News report. C. Art show. D. Life experience.

People often think of the North Pole (北极) and the South Pole as similar frozen (冰冻的) wastelands. They are both places with very cold temperatures and few people live there. However, the North and South Poles are not much alike as people may imagine.
The North Pole has no land only thick ice. Temperatures seldom go above 32°F (华氏度), at which water turns into ice. Most of the time, it stays below zero. In winter temperatures are usually as low as -30°F.
Although conditions were very poor, people tried for many centuries to reach the North Pole. More than 100 years ago, two men, Robert Peary and Mathew Henson, were able to get to this environment full of troubles and difficulties. They reached the North Pole on March 8th, 1909. It was really a hard trip for them.
There are few things more dangerous than crossing the Arctic (北极圈) on foot. People who stayed there may face many problems: very cold temperatures, sudden storms, and even hunger. Most of the area is uninhabited. Few people can live in such a difficult place.
People might think that with such low temperatures for most of the year, the ice would be thick and hard. However, this is not true in the Arctic. The movement of the ocean water under the ice may often cause many different changes on the surface. Sometimes the ice breaks into two opening lanes of water (水道) called “leads”. Anyone who falls into a lead can be frozen to death in a few minutes.
24. This passage is probably from__________.
A. a novel B. a science book
C. a story book D. a computer magazine
25. What does the underlined word “uninhabited” probably mean in Chinese
A. 环境优美的 B. 充满危险的
C. 适合居住的 D. 无人居住的
26. What is the reason for the ice to break into two opening lanes of water
A. The temperature suddenly drops. B. The water under the ice is frozen.
C The ocean water under the ice moves. D. The surface is covered with lots of ice.
27. What does this passage mainly talk about
A The thick ice in the North Pole. B. The water under the ice is frozen.
C. The real situation in the North Pole. D. The surface is covered with lots of ice.

① “Practice makes perfect” is a very popular expression. But can we take this saying literally
②One popular view is that if a person practises for at least 10, 000 hours, he will reach “perfection”, or in other words, become an expert in a field. It was given by Malcolm Gladwell in his best-selling book, Outliers: The Story of Success. He gave the examples of the music group The Beatles and Microsoft co-creator Bill Gates, who clearly put in over 10, 000 hours of practice before they became successful.
③However, Gladwell’s book has been said by many to be too simplistic and generalizing (概括). Anders Ericsson argued that 10, 000 hours was just an average figure. Some people may need fewer than 10, 000 hours and others may need more. He also said that practising a lot was not enough, the type and quality of practice also made a difference. Most importantly, he mentioned the importance of “deliberate (刻意) practice”. When a person practises a specific part of a skill in depth rather than as a whole, it’ll be much more effective, though it’s tiring.
④ Many other studies argue that practice alone is far from enough. In fact, a more recent study from Princeton University stated that practice only accounted for up to 26% of reaching an expert level. Many other factors (因素) such as IQ, personality, attitude, and starting age can also counted. Natural talent is an important factor, especially in sports. For instance, many baseball players in America with amazing vision can see the ball much sooner than others do. Success also depends on social factors, environmental factors, and even just being in the right place at the right time!
⑤ In conclusion, practice may not make perfect, but deliberate practice has been shown to lead us to improvement.
28. What does the underlined word “it” in Para. 2 refer to (指代)
A. The view. B. The word. C. The book. D. The field.
29. What is Anders Ericsson’s attitude (态度) to Gladwell’s view on practice
A. Amazed. B. Worried. C. Hopeful. D. Doubtful.
30. Which of the following is especially important in sports according to Princeton University’s study
A. IQ. B. Personality. C. Natural talent. D. Starting age.
31 Which of the following will the author most probably agree with
A. Practice makes better. B. Rome was not built in a day.
C. Every man has his price. D. A good beginning is half done.

What subject do you worry about the most at school Many students worry about math. Some students can’t sleep well the day before a math exam. Others may feel very nervous during the exam itself. But there might be a way to make the subject less stressful (压力大的).
“For people who are worried about math, posture (姿势) makes a big difference,” Erik Paper from San Francisco State University told the Daily Mail. That’s right—sitting up straight can help you do better on math exams.
Scientists tested 125 college students. They asked them to do a simple math exam while sitting in a slumped—over (趴倒的) posture, or sitting up straight. After the test, 56 percent of students said the exam was easier to do if they were sitting up straight.
Slumping over is a defensive (戒备的) posture. It can bring about bad memories in the body and brain. This can stop you from thinking clearly, Paper said.
Students who were not nervous about taking the math exam did not necessarily benefit (受益) from better posture. But they did find that doing math while slumped over was more difficult, Science Daily reported.
Good posture isn’t just helpful for taking math exams. Sports people, musicians and public speakers can all benefit from better posture. When you feel stressed out, you can also try to sit up straight or stand tall. It can help you feel more certain and focus better.

A Good Learning Habit
Good habits benefit a person’s whole life. Let me tell you something about my learning habit.
One of my good habits is taking notes in class. I take down what my teachers write on the blackboard and other important points about my lessons. I keep my notes well-organized and tidy so that I can find information easily later. After class I read the notes and try to remember the information as much as possible. Before I do my homework and take exams, I review my notes carefully.
The habit of taking notes helps me become a successful student. It not only improves my learning abilities, but also helps me get good grades.
