The importance of biodiversity (生物多样性)
What is biodiversity You can think of it as a big family album (相册) that has photos of all the living things on Earth, from plants to animals, from fungi to humans. Every year on May 22, the United Nations (UN) celebrates International Day for Biological Diversity.
Scientists said that the number of species (物种) on Earth is between 5.3 million and 1 trillion. The UN said that the biodiversity we see today is the result of 4.5 billion years of evolution (进化).
Biodiversity is a web of life in which all species have their role. It is important because we depend on nature for so many things. According to the UN, more than 1 billion people depend on forests for their living. And land and oceans take in more than half of all carbon emissions (碳排放).
The loss of biodiversity influences us directly. For example, if there are fewer animals that eat harmful insects, the insects will grow in number. This can harm our crops and make it hard for us to get enough food.
Biodiversity usually grows slowly but it can drop fast. According to a 2016 report of the World Wildlife Fund, the number of vertebrate animals (脊椎动物) went down by 58 percent between 1970 and 2012. Freshwater species had an 81 percent drop in the same time. Some scientists said that by the end of the 21st century, 5 percent of species will die out.

While extinction (灭绝) is natural, human activities like pollution have made it worse. Human use of land, mainly for growing food, has already changed over 70 percent of all ice-free land. About 85 percent of wetlands have gone away, according to the UN.
To help with the problem, the UN has asked the whole world to work together. In China, more than 300 endangered wildlife animals, including Asian elephants, have seen their numbers rise in 2022, said Xinhua.
“Ecological civilization (生态文明) plays a big part in Chinese direction,” Inger Andersen with the UNEP (联合国环境规划署) told Xinhua. “And we look forward to that direction forming a part of the global direction for an ecological balance (平衡) with our planet.”
29. Why is biodiversity important according to the passage
A. Because it grows slowly but it can drop fast.
B. Because it is a big family album with photos of all the living things on Earth.
C. Because it plays an important role in protecting nature and supporting human life.
30. What does the example in Paragraph 4 show
A. We should keep more animals to eat harmful insects.
B. The loss of biodiversity can lead to food problems.
C. Biodiversity has nothing to do with food production.
31. Which of the following can be put in ▲ .
A. Calling the world to work together B. Protecting biodiversity in China C. Keeping the balance of nature
32. What can we learn from the text
A. Biodiversity grows and drops at a similar speed.
B. Human activities like pollution have a bad influence on biodiversity.
C. The number of vertebrate animals has increased by 58% from 1970 to 2012.

Pickleball (匹克球), a relaxing sport that has been around since the 1960s, is becoming popular in China. Young people are growing especially interested in the game.
“Pickleball has been played not only in big cities, such as Beijing and Shanghai, but also in smaller cities as well,” said Zeng Guobiao, director of the China Liaison Office of the International Pickleball Federation. Young people in Anhui, Shandong, Zhejiang, Sichuan, Hubei, Guizhou and Yunnan provinces are also interested in the sport and setting up clubs, he added.
The sport of pickleball, invented in 1965 in the US, is a game in which two or four players hit a wiffle ball over a net. It looks like tennis but is played on a badminton court (羽毛球场) with a paddle (球拍). The rules of the game are simple with little running needed, making it easy to start for players of all ages and skill levels.
Zhou Minghao, who works for a fintech company in Chongqing, started to play pickleball in May.
“As a sports lover, I have tried many sports and got several major injuries (重伤), so I decided to play pickleball, which is safe,” he said.
Apart from safety, Zhang Xin, who started the Chengdu PANG Pickleball Club, said that, like badminton, the sport of pickleball is fun and competitive. “It’s a sport for anyone, anywhere and anytime,” he said.
Wu Xiaomeng from Chongqing agrees. He happened to learn about pickleball and tried it out with some friends in September 2022. “It is an equal game for both men and women, as it requires more skill than physical power,” he said. “It is a good social activity as anyone can easily take up this sport and play it for fun. “Roses given, fragrance in hand. This saying tells us that when we help others, we also benefit ourselves. I truly understood its meaning through a special volunteer experience.
Last summer vacation I joined a volunteer group to help the old people at the old people’s home. We helped them clean their rooms, sweep the floors, and make their beds. Then, we talked with them and played games with them. I got such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I saw the look of joy on their faces.
This experience has taught me to be more patient and understanding. What’s more, I realized that helping others brings happiness. I will keep volunteering and helping those in need.
