On March 15, 2022, Francis Kéré was awarded the Pritzker Prize, otherwise known as the Nobel Prize for architecture, becoming the first African architect ever to obtain this prize.
His path to success was not smooth. When he was 7 years old, Francis Kéré left his family home to attend school because his village, Gando in Burkina Faso, did not have one of its own. Thirteen years later, he moved to Germany on a carpentry scholarship, with a dream of returning home one day to build the classrooms that didn’t exist then. Kéré achieved just that, becoming an architect and completing his first building, Gando Primary School, in 2001.
Casting mud like concrete and using local materials over imported ones, Kéré proposed a particular vision of structure that both strengthens communities and responds to the climate crisis. As such, Tuesday’s Pritzker Prize announcement is not only a nod of approval for him, but for “vernacular” architecture — a term used to describe designs that directly respond to local climates, materials and building traditions — itself. He also let the whole village participate in the design, encouraging them to construct the school, using local wood to press the stone floors and local clay to make bricks. The result was a welcoming structure with a “floating” roof that allows natural winds in a hot climate, and wall openings that bring light for students to learn even without electricity. Mr. Kéré showed the villagers that ideas to deal with climate or other challenges are always at hand.
Though, Kéré has since designed bigger projects, including many national-scale projects differing in size, his approach remains grounded in Gando. “That’s how I’m trying to translate the work I have started in Gando to structures that present national pride,” says the newly-awarded architect.
Kéré will officially be named Pritzker winner at a ceremony in London later this year. As with previous winner, he will be awarded a $ 100,000 grant and a bronze medal.
4. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2
A. Speak highly of Kéré’s efforts.
B. Introduce Kéré’ s childhood dream.
C. Bring a new topic for discussion.
D. Add some background information.
5. What’s Kéré’s architectural concept
A. Economizing labour force.
B. Having a fancy appearance.
C. Highlighting sustainability.
D. Using imported building materials.
6. Which can best describe Francis Kéré
A. Creative and caring.
B. Optimistic and humorous.
C. Humble and ambitious.
D. Stubborn and adventurous.
7. What kind of writing is the text
A. An award speech. B. A news report. C. A novel. D. A review.

A new study shows that getting half of American 8-to 11-year-olds into 25 minutes of physical activity three times a week would save $21.9 billion in medical costs over their lifetimes.
The increase from the current 32 percent to 50 percent of kids taking part in exercise, active play, or sports would also result in 340,000 fewer overweight teenagers.
“Physical activity not only makes kids feel better and helps them develop healthy habits, it’s also good for the nation’s bottom line,” says Bruce Y. Lee, executive director of the Global Obesity Prevention Center at Johns Hopkins University. “Our findings show that encouraging exercise and investing in physical activity when kids are young pays big dividends as they grow up.”
The study, published in the journal Health Affairs, suggests an even bigger advantage if every 8 to 11-year-old in the United States exercised 75 minutes over three times in a week. In that case, the researchers estimate (估计), $62.3 billion in medical costs over the course of their lifetimes could be avoided and 1.2 million fewer youths would be overweight. And the money would increase if not just current 8-to-11 year olds, but every future elementary school child joined their game.
Exercise at least 25 minutes a day, three days a week, is a guideline developed for kids by the Sports and Fitness Industry Association. An overweight person’s lifetime medical costs average $62,331. For the overweight person, these amounts are great.
“Even a little increase in physical activity could cause billions of dollars in savings,” Lee says. He also says there are other benefits of physical activity that don’t affect weight, such as improving bone density, improving mood, and building muscle.
Lee says “We need to be adding physical education programs and not cutting them. We need to encourage kids to be active, to reduce screen time and get them running around again. It’s important for their physical health and the nation’s financial (经济的) health.”
8. Which of the following is the best title of the passage
A. Getting kids to run would save money.
B. Physical activity is important for kids.
C. Physical education programs: adding or cutting
D. Overweight person’s lifetime medical costs are increasing.
9. What’s the underlined words’ meaning in paragraph 3
A. Pays much money. B. Pays little money.
C. Plays an important part. D. Is a serious question.
10. What can we infer from the passage
A. The number of American kids from 8 to 11 who take part in physical activity is increasing.
B. Physical education programs should be cut to encourage the nation’s financial health.
C. 25 minutes of physical activity three times a week may result in fewer overweight teenagers.
D. Physical activity can only make kids feel better but can’t help them develop healthy habits.

第四部分 书面表达(满分25分)
【71题答案】
【答案】As we know, most people have a national hero or heroes in their hearts. For me, Yuan Longping, a Chinese great agricultural scientist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is actually my national hero.
He was born on September 7th, 1930. In the 1960s, China experienced famine and he came up with an idea for hybridizing rice. In 1973, he developed a new way of growing rice and hence new rice was developed. In 1979, his technique for hybrid rice was introduced into the United States, which was the first case of intellectual property rights transfer in the history of China. With the development of new rice, gone are the days when Chinese people suffer from terrible starvation, and more countries of the world are able to grow more rice to feed the growing world population.
We should learn from him the spirit of striving for the well-being of mankind. His perseverance, indifference to personal fame and fortune, his devotion to research work and profound insight are also great merits we should follow!
