As my teacher called the students’ names, I was sitting there. The students went to receive their report cards
happily. I watched their faces with envy and remembered my poor result last year. Since then, I have worked hard,
but I wasn’t sure if I had made any progress.
I was too worried to hear my teacher call my name, and my classmate pushed me heavily. I tried my best to
keep my cool and walked towards the teacher’s desk. The desk was only two meters away, but it seemed to be a
long way for me to go.
Time seemed to stop. My heart was beating fast and my hands were shaking badly when I received my report
card. My teacher was saying something, but I was so nervous that I couldn’t hear her. Soon, thunderous applause
(雷鸣般的掌声) brought me out of the darkness, and I heard my teacher say, “Wonderful job!”
When I opened my report card, I discovered an “A” on it. I couldn’t believe my eyes until I gave it a second
look. Then all my fears disappeared. I felt like I was flying in the air. I heard birds singing.

English teacher, Ms. Zhang, decided to test AI-assisted learning by inputting 20 new words from Unit 3 into
DeepSeek with clear instructions: “Create a 300-word story about space exploration for eighth graders, using all
target vocabulary (目标词汇) naturally.” Within seconds, DeepSeek created The Mars Adventure—a thrilling tale
where words like “atmosphere”, “experiment”, and “technical” were bolded (粗体的) in context.
The story followed astronaut Emma, who collected rock samples on Mars while solving unexpected problems.
When her oxygen tank alarm rang, she calmly checked its “pressure”, showing quick thinking. Students later did
some exercises based on the story.
Wang Yue, who used to score lowest in vocabulary tests, became enthusiastic: “Remembering ‘gravity’ is
easier when it’s part of Emma’ s struggle to walk on Mars! The AI-made comics (漫画) explaining ‘experiment’
steps are cooler than textbooks.” DeepSeek’s tracking (追 踪 ) system also helped. If students confused similar
words like “effect” and “affect”, it sent customized (定制的) practice sentences through the school app.
However, Ms. Zhang reminded the class: “AI stories are just starters. Real improvement comes when you use
these words in speeches or diaries.” She shared progress data—80% of students improved their quiz scores by 20%
after two weeks. “Next month,” she announced, “we’ll use DeepSeek to create our own sci-fi stories!” The
classroom erupted in cheers, proving that with smart tech support, even vocabulary drills (训练) could spark joy.
13. What was Ms. Zhang’s main purpose in using DeepSeek
A. To reduce teachers’ teaching work. B. To prepare for a space experiment.
C. To ask students to use DeepSeek freely. D. To make vocabulary learning interesting.
14. The underlined word “enthusiastic” in the story probably means ______.
A. happy B. worried C. stressed D. nervous
15. How did the story help students understand “gravity”
A. By using examples of problem-solving. B. Through Emma’ s quick thinking to the alarm.
C. By showing Emma’s walking difficulty on Mars. D. Through grammar exercises produced by DeepSeek.
16. What does Ms. Zhang think of AI tools
A. They make exams unnecessary. B. They work best for English learning.
C. They must be used with active practice. D. They should help students do homework.

China has made great progress in controlling deserts over the past 30 years. Through hard work and smart
plans, large areas of deserts have been turned into green lands.
One famous example is the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia. This success story shows how deserts can
become useful lands. By planting special grasses and trees, people have fixed moving sand and increased forest
coverage from 5% to 53% since 1988. Local farmers now grow fruits like grapes in this “green wall”, which also
helps their income.
Science and technology play key roles in this fight. The government has used both traditional and modern
methods. In Ningxia, workers lay wheat straw (稻草) in checkerboard patterns (棋盘格) to hold sand. This
low-cost sand-fixing technology is now used in 13 countries. Satellites and drones (无人机) help monitor plant
growth across 176 million hectares of protected land.
More than 200 million people have joined tree-planting activities. Since 2000, China has reduced desert areas
by over 2,000 square kilometers yearly—the fastest rate in the world. The “Great Green Wall” project aims to plant
35 billion trees by 2050.
China’s experience brings hope to other countries. These efforts not only improve the environment but also
share knowledge globally. China has trained over 2,000 experts (专家) from Africa and the Middle East, showing
that deserts can be changed into rich land with determination.

Before the big exam, schools will have revision classes. I think my English revision classes were useful but
tiring.
In class, we usually had different kinds of activities. Sometimes my English teacher explained how to use the
key words and sentences and we took notes. With the teacher’s help, we practiced listening, reading and writing in
class. But we often did exercises and had exams, which made me stressed out.
I hope my English teacher will try to say something to make us relaxed in class. Although she wants to make
us better, it’s also important to reduce our stress.
