What type of shark is the slowest The slowest shark in the world is the Greenland shark. It lives in very cold waters near the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋) and the North Atlantic Ocean (北大西洋). In these icy waters, the Greenland shark swims only about one mile per hour. That is slower than many human swimmers! The fastest shark, the short fin mako shark, can swim up to 45 miles per hour.
Why is the Greenland shark so slow Scientists think that it all has to do with their cold water home. When fish are in cold water, their bodies slow down. Their bodies become cold and their muscles (肌肉) cannot work as well. They cannot move as fast as they can in warm water. Human beings do not experience this because our bodies stay warm even in cold weather.
The Greenland shark is also the one that lives the longest. In fact, Greenland sharks don’t even become full adults until they are about 150 years old! Scientists have learned that they live about 500 years.
How can Greenland sharks live so long These sharks eat small amounts (数量) of food for their size. A Greenland shark weighing 500 pounds would need less than 7 ounces (盎司) every day! That is less than half a pound of food. They need small amounts of food because they use up energy very slowly. The way we use up energy from food is called metabolism (新陈代谢) . Greenland sharks have a very slow metabolism. Animals with slow metabolisms usually live longer.

第二节、阅读表达(共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
Have you ever heard of a “shorekeeper (海岸卫士) ” Actually, it’s a job for a special kind of forest—mangrove forest. In China, we call it “hongshulin” or “red forest”. Let’s go into a mangrove forest to have a look.
Where are mangrove forests
They grow near shorelines (海岸线) . They separate the land from the sea. This way, they protect the land from strong winds and waves.
Smart trees
Trees stand like soldiers, with shorter ones standing at the front and taller ones at the back. When typhoons come, they protect the villages. Like other trees, mangrove trees take in CO2 to make oxygen. They are helping to slow down climate change on Earth.
Birds’ home
Many wild birds live here. Migratory (迁徙的) birds stop there, and mangrove forests provide food for them during their journeys.
Are the trees red
No, mangrove trees don’t have red leaves or flowers. They are green. But they have special bark (树皮) . Their bark can be used to make red dyes (染料) . Their leaves can store water. Some also store salt. When these leaves fall, they take the salt with them. Some parts of the roots grow out of the water. They need more oxygen to live.
Why are mangroves important
Mangroves are not just trees—they are life-savers for both people and animals. Unluckily, mangroves are disappearing in many parts of the world because of pollution and human activities. Let’s take actions to protect these amazing forests so they can continue to be the “shorekeepers” of our planet.
