That night, Chandra told her family about the situation at the bookstore. Her brother Pete said,
5
“The bookstore needs more people. How about starting a book club People could meet in the
store to discuss a book they’ve all read. If they buy it at the store, they'll receive a discount (折扣).”
That’s great!”Chandra said excitedly. “How about having some writers come and do a book

even the school headmaster.

introduce tonight’s writer, I must thank a young lady named Chandra Phillips. This exciting
evening was mostly managed by her. If she were a little older, I would have her as my
advertising director,” said Mrs. Lee. The crowd laughed and clapped (鼓掌). As Mr. Fletcher
began to read from his latest book, Mrs. Lee took a seat next to Chandra.

There are some very good inventions which, for one reason or another, don’t become
popular. These inventions should be better known, even though I think that some of them are
crazy. Let’s have a look at some of these inventions and see if you agree that they should be
more successful.
The Australians had a great idea to stop people from drinking and driving. The idea was
that if a driver wanted to start the car, she or he would have to blow into a bag first. If there
was too much alcohol (酒精) in their breath, the car wouldn't start. It sounded like a great idea
to me, but people said that they might need to drive the car in an emergency even if they had
drunk too much alcohol. Another idea I liked was an invention by a scientist who thought his
children watched too much TV. He linked the TV to an exercise bike so that the electricity to
power the TV was generated (产出) by the bike. If the children wanted to watch a lot of TV,
they had to pedal (踩踏板) very hard. I found another invention on the Internet which was
intended (倾向于) to encourage good habits. Believe it or not, this invention was an ashtray
(烟灰缸) which spoke to you when you lit a cigarette! The “voice” of the ashtray was
activated(启动) by the heat from the cigarette and reminded you how dangerous it is to smoke.
One of the strangest inventions I have come across is a bicycle which can cross rivers!
The idea was that when you came to a river, you could inflate a huge plastic ball all around
the bike. You would then get into the ball which would float on the river while you pedaled
the bike inside the ball! Why not use a bridge instead A friend of mine at school once bought
a strange pair of football shoes. On the bottom of the shoes there was a rotating pad of studs
(转动钉垫). The idea was that you would change direction more quickly if the studs rotated
with you. The problem was that every time you stopped you changed direction whether you
wanted to or not! I think he wore those shoes twice! One thing I would like is a baseball cap
with a built-in radio so you can listen to sport all day with your hands free. While we are on
the subject of sport, the Americans invented a kind of robot for sports fans. If you were
watching your team on TV on your own, you could press a button and the robot would do
“high fives” with you! Fantastic! I wonder if you have any good ideas for inventions like these.
40. What’s the writer’s attitude towards the inventions mentioned in Paragraph 2
A.The writer regrets he knew nothing about the inventions.
B.The writer doubts if the inventions will be popular soon.
C.The writer thinks people will benefit from the inventions.
D.The writer finds these inventions are the strangest of all.
41. What can we know from the passage
A.It was very bad for the drivers to blow into a bag before their driving.
B.The father used his invention to stop children watching too much TV.
7
C.The bike crossing rivers was considered one of the best inventions.
D.The invention of new shoes would make players run much faster.
42. What’s the best title for the passage
A.Popular Inventions Today. B.Technology and Invention.
C.The History of Invention. D.Inventions with a Difference.
D
It’s certainly good to be nice. Whether it’s helping a friend with homework, watching their
favorite shows even if they’re not your thing or giving up a little time and energy to do
something for a friend is a praiseworthy decision. Or, one might be the bigger person and agree
to take the short end of the stick in an argument, all to satisfy others and avoid further
problems. Still, we need to control our niceness: niceness is valuable, but it’s definitely not
without downsides.
To be clear. I’m not advocating(倡导)for selfishness. In fact, I’d encourage everyone to
do small favors for the people they care about. Helping others makes us happy. It also gives us
a greater sense of purpose and belonging, as we feel more connected to those we do favors for.
The same goes for sacrificing (牺牲)a little on our part to end a disagreement, which might
feel uncomfortable in the short term, but is in the end for the greater good.
Yet, we need to be careful about where our niceness comes from. When our desire(渴望)
to help others comes from a need to be seen as a good or friendly person, our motivations
(动机)become increasingly dangerous. For example, we might want others to relate to us, so we say th at we like their favorite songs when we don’t. Being agreeable all the time makes us
become a product of the people around us instead of having our own special personality.
Additionally, avoiding unreasonable agreeability is even more important. We can’t help
offering to do too many favors because our desire to be seen as selfless and kind outweighs
our worries for our own well-being. If you always support others emotionally, or help them
with their studies, that habit might become part of how you view yourself. In other words, you
see yourself as someone willing to lend a hand to others when they are in need.
Agreeability crosses the experiences of all kinds of people, and it can be especially true
within communities where selflessness is important. From my experience at Harvey Mudd
College, students are known for caring for others-offering to help their classmates with their
studies. This common view of people’s willingness to help can put stress on Mudders to sacrifice
their energy, even if they don’t have the skills to do so. Instead, they should remind themselves
of their responsibilities, and then decide if they have the ability to lend a hand.
Finally, making kindness a habit is an honorable goal. But as with all things, moderation
(适度)is key, and sometimes, sacrificing a little too much can cause more harm than good.
8
43. What does the underlined part “take the short end of the stick” in Paragraph 1 probably
mean
A.Make up for mistakes. B.Hit the other person.
C.Suffer bad results. D.Say sorry first.
44. Unreasonable agreeability may stop us from ________.
A.viewing ourselves properly B.having a sense of belonging
C.developing social relationships D.caring about our own happiness
45. Why is “Harvey Mudd College” mentioned in the passage
A.To spread the spirit of selflessness within communities.
B.To show an effect of widespread niceness in communities.
C.To criticize the students who sacrifice too much for others.
D.To explain responsibilities people should take within communities.
46. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A.being nice can make people easily understood by others
B.being selfless helps people improve their social skills
C.people should think twice before saying “yes”
D.people who help others are more popular
第四部分 书面表达(共 20 分)
七、阅读与表达(共 10 分,第 47-49 题各 2 分,第 50 题 4 分)
Parents and children often face the challenges of money. Common topics include setting the
pocket money, learning to save, and deciding on expensive purchases. The goal of most parents
is to teach their kids how to manage money wisely. The goal of most kids is getting money
to spend. How can families balance these goals
"All parents hope they'll raise a money-savvy (善于理财的) kid, who'll grow up to be an
adult wise in their money use." says financial (金融的) planner Peg Eddy. The key is letting
kids learn by having a little money of their own.
The Tidler family in Denver found the best way to teach about money was to let their kids
earn some. Their son, Ryan has made $7,800 by helping with his parents’ garden. Besides, he
bought a bike and a wonderful sound system. And he is going to buy a car next year. Ryan
has come to see the value in making his own money even when other kids are given money by
their parents.
Learn Now, Save Later
Money skills are an important part of becoming a successful adult. David Brady, another
financial planner, says, "Young people today will have much more responsibility for their
9
financial future than their parents or grandparents." Experts say, knowing how to manage money
is the best way for kids to get what they really want. That means long-term planning and
saving for big expenses like college or a car. It also means thinking of others, by making
donations to charity (慈善).
Brady does remind kids. “They shouldn't be thinking about money all the time,” he says.
However, they should understand basic rules for earning, saving and investing (投资).
That knowledge is greatly needed. Over the past years, the average credit card debt (债务)
of Americans ages 18 to 24 doubled, to nearly $3,000. Among high school students, four out of
five have never taken a personal finance class.
Talking About It
Many kids want to learn how to manage their money. But parents think only about what
kids shouldn’t do. They argue that kids are young and inexperienced, they may easily get in
debt if they manage their own money. Giselle Lopez, 17, of New York City, learned the hard
way.She was over $2,000 in debt on her first credit card. Her parents refused to pay, so Giselle
got a job. Then she paid the debt off slowly herself. "Now every time I use it, I know that it
comes from my own pocket," Giselle says. "That gives me a sense of responsibility for my
actions."
Different kids will have different styles when it comes to money. Teaching them how to use
money doesn’t have to mean setting strict rules. When children like Ryan and Giselle have their
own money to consider, they can learn to set those rules themselves.
47. What is the goal of most kids about money
____________________________________________________________________________
48. How has Ryan made $7,800
____________________________________________________________________________
49. How much was Giselle Lopez in debt on her first credit card

50. Is it a good idea for kids to learn to manage their money Why or why not (Please give at least 2 rea
sons)

题目 ○2
Housework Makes Me Better
Labor is a great virtue. I believe doing chores is necessary for everyone. It not only
keeps our home clean but also teaches us responsibility. As teenagers, learning life skills
through housework helps us grow into independent adults.
In my daily life, I often sweep the floor to keep rooms tidy and take out the rubbish
every evening. On weekends, I sometimes wash dishes or fold clothes for my family.
By doing chores, I’ve gained a strong sense of independence. I’ve learned time
management by balancing schoolwork and house duties. Most importantly, I feel proud to
contribute to my family, which strengthens our bond. Let’s embrace housework—it shapes
us into capable and caring individuals!
