Gift-giving in different countries
From birthdays and anniversaries to going-away presents, or perhaps just when visiting someone’s home, there are many ____1____ to buy gifts for people during the year.
However, the etiquette of gift-giving isn’t the same in all places around the world. So if you’re buying for someone ____2____ another culture, it might be useful to know what to do—or what not to do.
In fact, buying a gift might not always be appropriate (恰当的) in every situation. In many parts of the Middle East, giving gifts is an important part of business and personal life —____3____ it’s not a good idea for a man to buy a gift for a woman they don’t know well, or for a woman to buy one for a man. And in Yemen and Saudi Arabia, gifts are only given between people who are already quite ____4____.
You’ll also ____5____ to think about how you wrap (包) the gift. In Egypt, gifts are often wrapped twice in two different types of paper, while in other countries some ____6____ of wrapping shouldn’t be used at all. For example, you shouldn’t use white in China, or black or purple in South America, because these colors are related to ____7____.
____8____ you give or receive the present is also different. In Ghana, gifts should be given with the right hand, and the same is true in India and the Middle East. In some Asian countries, including China and Japan, the person getting the gift might refuse it two or three times ____9____ finally accepting it. This is thought to be a polite way of receiving a gift in some situations.
But perhaps the most important thing, ____10____ you are in the world, is the purpose of your gift: You want to show you care!

Huang Xuhua, the chief designer of China’s first-generation nuclear submarines (核潜艇), passed away in Wuhan at the age of 99 on February 6th, 2025. He was widely regarded as the “father of China’s nuclear submarines”.
Born in March 1926 to a family of doctors in Guangdong, Huang was the third child of his parents. After spending his boyhood in wartime, he went to Shanghai Jiao Tong University to study shipbuilding. Upon graduation in 1949, Huang began his lifelong career in the shipbuilding industry.
In 1958, Huang was secretly called to Beijing to join the research team tasked with designing (设计) China’s first nuclear-powered submarine. From that point on, for the next 30 years, he hardly ever went home. At that time, China lacked (缺乏) the basic conditions to develop nuclear submarines. Not only did none of the researchers have any knowledge in this field, but other countries were highly protective of such technologies, offering few technical references (技术参考).
So Huang and other researchers started by searching newspapers and magazines for information. After carefully analysing that information and studying two US submarine models, they finally came up with five plans.
The team members didn’t have computers or digital calculators, so they used abacuses (算盘) to solve problems. To ensure the results were correct, they were divided into three groups to do the math at the same time and would do the math again if the three values (数值) were different.
After years of hard work, China finally built its first nuclear-powered submarine in 1970, becoming the fifth nation to have nuclear submarines.
Huang’s name remained secret until 1987, when a magazine in Shanghai was allowed to publish a report revealing (展示) only his family name.
Even in his 90s Huang visited his office every weekday morning to review materials of his know-how and experience. He also provided advice for young researchers on solving technical problems. In recognition of his great contributions, Huang was given the Medal of the Republic, China’s highest honour, in 2019.

Fridge magnets
Fridge magnets are a new business in the cultural tourism. They are popular among young people because they are usually not too expensive, easy to carry and show local cultural characters.
Shen Ji, a girl from Deqing, Zhejiang, is doing this new business. She gave up her job in Hangzhou, and returned to her hometown to design fridge magnets. “My mother didn’t agree with me on my decision to give up my job for a new business,” Shen Ji says, who graduated from the University of Manchester in the UK with a Master’s degree (硕士学位) and worked in Hangzhou for 8 years. Her mother is running a homestay (民宿). If Shen Ji likes, she can take over the homestay. But Shen Ji started her fridge magnet business instead.
In fact, Shen Ji is a fridge magnet lover herself. Wherever she travels, she will buy local fridge magnets. The double-door fridge at her home has been covered with fridge magnets of different sizes and shapes, leaving nearly no more space.
Shen Ji’s hometown, Moganshan, is a well-known travel spotlight in China. “Cultural and creative products are needed in Moganshan, and fridge magnets are one of the products,” she says, “but there are few people making fridge magnets of Moganshan. As a local, I have a deep understanding of my hometown culture.” Therefore, designing fridge magnets for her hometown has become Shen Ji’s life goal.
So far, Shen Ji has designed 7 fridge magnets with Moganshan characters. About 3,200 magnets have been sold. Shen Ji plans to spread local culture through her design and offer more creative cultural products.

B. To keep on selling 7 magnets.
C. To spread local culture and make more products.

On holiday, many will find themselves in foreign lands. Things are often different and new to them, including the language. ____31____ But nowadays more and more of them are using free translation apps not only to understand a passage but also to talk. With the conversation section on these apps, you can speak into the phone and hear a spoken translation moments later.
____32____ Take one of the best-known translation apps as an example. If we say “I’m peanut butter-free” to it, in French or Italian, the app translates it as “I’m without peanut butter.” It’s true to the words, while the meaning is totally wrong. The best tool may not be a translation app at all.
____33____ Let’s try ChatGPT. Tell it “Write a message in Spanish to a waiter. I’m peanut butter-free, so I’d like some sandwiches without peanut.” It produces a perfect passage. The AI system does more than just translate. It’s more like a native dinner guide.
____34____ Douglas Hobstadter, a polyglot (a man who speaks or understands many languages) disagrees. He describes giving a difficult speech in Chinese. It takes a lot of work without the help of AI, but in the end, you feel a sense of achievement. Which would you be proud of, climbing to the top of Qomolangma or taking a helicopter there
____35____ Some go on learning languages. They want to exercise their brains, learn a lot about other cultures and directly chat with foreign friends. Others show their respect to the language learners. “Good for you, but that’s a bit painful for me,” they might say.
What’s your opinion on this debate Is it still necessary to learn languages
根据短文内容,从下列选项中选出能填入文中空白处的最佳选项,选项中有一项为多余选项。
A. Then how about an AI system
B. We find out how it can help you to enjoy life more.
C. In the past, they might have carried a dictionary with them.
D. As AI becomes more popular, people divide into two groups.
E. Though that would always be helpful, some translation might surprise you.
F. Some say that in this age of AI, people no longer need to learn a foreign language.

Spring seen in different eyes
Spring is coming! The warmer weather and beautiful flowers make people happy, but also miss their loved ones. Let’s see how Chinese poet Meng Haoran (689—740) and the British poet Thomas Nashe (1567—1601) talk about spring!
Spring Morning (By Meng Haoran) Spring morning in bed I was lying, Not to awake till birds were crying. At night it rained hard the wind rustling, How many fallen flowers are there lying.
Spring, The Sweet Spring (excerpt) (By Thomas Nashe) Spring, the sweet spring, is the year’s pleasant king, Then blooms (开花) each thing, then maids (少女) dance in a ring, Cold doth not sting (使刺痛), the pretty birds do sing: Cuckoo, jug-jug, pu-we, to-witta-woo!
Meng Haoran’s short, lovely poem paints a quiet spring morning scene—Imagine waking up late on a spring day. You hear birds singing happily outside. The birds’ songs and the soft morning light make the poet happy. Spring is full of life! But then you remember: last night, there was wind and rain. The storm reminds us that beautiful flowers can’t stay on trees forever. So this poem isn’t just about spring—it’s about learning to love the world’s beauty, even when it doesn’t last.
While Meng Haoran gently asks us to think about how quickly time passes, Thomas Nashe celebrates the season with joy and warmth. He paints a lively scene where both animals and people enjoy nature’s beauty. The weather is warm, birds sing happily and maids dance in a ring. Everything feels peaceful and full of life. The poem’s happy tone (口吻) and musical rhythm (节奏) express the poet’s excitement for the coming of spring, which he calls “sweet”.
46. What are the different feelings about spring in the two poems

47. If you were to write a poem about spring, what emotions (情感) would you express

Many of us have considered adding some plants or trees to our homes to make the place look just a little bit prettier. So, what about a bonsai
According to gardening expert Jessica Damiano, growing a bonsai is more than just caring for a small tree — it’s an art and a. way to develop patience.
Growing a bonsai might seem challenging at first. However, once you learn the basics, you can grow one—as long as you have some patience and pay attention to detail.
bonsai
When choosing a tree, you need to consider both the weather and your experience level. Different trees grow better in different temperatures and locations. After bringing your bonsai home, place it somewhere that meets its sunlight and temperature requirements.
Growing a young bonsai takes time. Regularly check the tree and plan your next cut.
Growers often train branches (树枝) to grow into expected shapes by wrapping (缠绕) them first with protective material and then with bonsai wire. This must be done carefully. In addition, the wrappings should be regularly loosened (松开) to protect the branches from damage (破坏) as they grow bigger.
Check the soil’s moisture (土壤水分) level daily by putting your finger into the top two centimeters. When the soil feels dry at that depth, you need to water it slowly until the water comes out from the hole in the bottom of the pot. In general, your bonsai should be fertilized (施肥) from spring through fall. Educate yourself on the requirements of your particular species and its stage of growth, as plants’ requirements are different and will change as they age.
Here’s where the patience comes: the beauty of bonsai lies not in the final product but in the journey.
The tree, which can live for years or even centuries, will grow over time, as will you. And by putting your personal touches on every branch, you will mark your bonsai with your own style.

Lucky Li Hua
Last Friday, Li Hua went to the night market of Laixi, where she had a special experience.
As she strolled around the bustling market aimlessly, she suddenly came across a game stand. The stand offered a dart-throwing game, and the grand prize was a lovely teddy bear. Instantly drawn to the fluffy toy, Li Hua couldn’t resist giving the game a try and paid ten yuan for a chance.
Li Hua held the darts firmly and looked at the target carefully. Then she threw the darts one by one. Because the game wasn’t too hard for her, she hit the target dead-center with all three darts. The people watching couldn’t help crying out in surprise, and the owner of the game stand looked really shocked. Li Hua had won the teddy bear!
Hugging the teddy bear tightly, Li Hua made her way home with a big smile on her face. How lucky she was!
