Although polar bears live in the Arctic, where temperatures hit -40°F, they stay warm thanks to their blubber (fat) and thick fur. The fat and thick fur keep ____45____ in and cold out. But scientists have found that polar bear fur provides more than insulation (隔热). It also contains oil that prevents ice from building up at all. ____46____ the researchers thought the structure of polar bear fur was what kept ice from sticking to it, but when they examined the fur under a microscope (显微镜), they realized that wasn’t the ____47____. They noticed something else, however: The fur was very oily. The team didn’t believe that could be what prevented the fur from freezing. To ____48____ whether their conclusion was right or wrong, they froze blocks of ice onto washed and unwashed polar bear fur, human hair, and ski equipment, which is coated with chemicals that reduce friction. Then they determined how much force was needed to remove the ice from each of these materials. Ice was ____49____ removed from the unwashed, greasy polar bear fur and the ski equipment. However, it was very hard to remove from the human hair and about four times harder to remove from the washed fur. After knowing for sure why the ice wasn’t sticking, the team carefully examined the oil itself. They found that it was full of chemicals that repel (排斥) ice. The study’s authors hope the findings will ____50____ the creation of materials that don’t get icy. At present, some of the chemicals used to keep skis ice-free are harmful to the environment.

Read the passage and fill in the blanks with proper words (在短文的空格内填入适当的词,使其内容通顺,每空格限填一词,首字母已给)
We come across abbreviations (缩写形式) every day, in all kinds of places. In the US, which of course is an abbreviation for the United States, people call the space agency NASA, rather than the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Many abbreviations are so common that we say them without thinking. Some people feel they make talking, reading, and writing c____51____, but others find shortened words or phrases confusing. What do you think Should we use abbreviations
Yes-they simplify life
Language is changing all the time and has been ever since humans began to speak. If it didn’t d____52____, we would still be saying “thine” instead of “yours” and “thou” instead of “you”. Imagine that! Some abbreviations, like “GIF” or “FBI,” are so common and well-known that it would sound s____53____ to say them in full. Abbreviations can be used to make text and speech shorter, quicker, and simpler to understand. That’s u____54____ if you’re in a hurry-for example, typing “BRB” is much faster than writing “I’ll be right back.” Abbreviations are also a kind of common language that can help people feel comfortable and familiar with each other.
No-they’re confusing
Proper use of abbreviations can speed up your reading or writing. However, if abbreviations aren’t used c____55____ they can slow you down rather than speed things up. For example, if a word or phrase isn’t written out in full the first time it’s used in a piece of writing, the r____56____ may have to waste time looking it up in a dictionary. Abbreviations can also cause misunderstandings or make people feel left out or embarrassed. If you don’t know what an abbreviation m____57____, it’s awkward (令人尴尬的) to ask another person to explain it. And sure, language changes over time, but some changes aren’t for the better. Saying “ty” just isn’t as polite as saying “thank you,” is it It just sounds lazy and, frankly, insincere.

Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题)
In Paris, there was a highly regarded (备受推崇的) modern magazine. One day, this magazine published an interesting question. The question was as follows, “If one day the world-famous LouvreMuseum were suddenly caught in a fire, and under the extremely bad situation, only one piece of art could be rescued, which one would you choose ”
After the news spread, tens of thousands of letters from citizens poured into the magazine office. Among the many replies, two stood out. One was from an experienced old professor who was very famous in the art world. For him, every piece of the collection in the Louvre Museum was a perfect mix of history, culture and art. The other was a young man. He was full of life and talent with his unique thoughts and love for art.
The old professor wrote several pages explaining the reasons for his choice of a particular piece. However, when the editors saw the young man’s answer, they were surprised and touched by this simple yet intelligent answer. The young man’s answer was: choose the one closest to the door. This answer was like lightning cutting through the question, making people applaud (称赞).
Every piece of the collection in the Louvre is a unique treasure in the world. In such a moment, instead of wasting time thinking about difficult choices, it was better to take the chance and rescue just one piece if possible.
When a disaster happens, there isn’t enough time to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each choice, even if each choice is extremely important. This idea of taking a chance and taking quick action applies to life and work.

Dear Mr. Zhang,
I’m Lu Yao, a junior 3 student. I hope to get an opportunity to be a volunteer for Community Health Run.
I am a healthy and active boy who likes organizing group activities. In our class, I am in charge of organizing the morning reading every day. And the whole class speaks highly of my job. What’s more, I ever planned a singing contest for our class which turned out to be a great success.
If I got this chance, I’d like to make some preparations. First, I’ll communicate with all the runners to get more detailed information about their needs. Then, I’ll think about how to help them better based on their information. Next, I’ll plan a specific route for the community health run. In order to make sure the community run a complete success, I’ll ask my friends to help with the route and I am sure we’ll do it well.
I believe I am the right person you are looking for. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Lu Yao
