One of my earliest memories is playing “shops” with my grandpa when I was 5 years old. After 36 school at 15, I worked in a fruit shop, but I had no idea of how to run my own shop back then.

Eric passed away 16 years ago, but I am 41 getting rid of (处理掉) the shop. I love it all—talking to the customers and getting 42 they want. Triathlon is a race in which each person swims, rides a bicycle and runs over very long distances. It has been held ten times in Hope Town. Sam, aged 20, finished nine races with his younger brother Luke. Every race was a victory for them. Luke can’t walk, talk or feed himself because of a rare brain illness since birth. But Sam wants his brother to know what it feels like to be part of a sport instead of having to sit and watch. A local TV journalist interviewed Sam after he received the Town Hero Award.

Oliver spent the first nine years of his life with Mrs. Mann. The government paid Mrs. Mann to look after children like Oliver. She looked after about twenty or thirty children like him. She knew exactly what the children needed, but she also knew exactly what she needed. As a result, she spent most of the money on herself. The children were always hungry, and sometimes they starved to death. Sometimes one would fall in the fire while Mrs. Mann was not looking or die of cold in the winter. Somehow, Oliver stayed alive.
On his ninth birthday, Oliver was small, thin, and pale. He and two other boys told Mrs. Mann that they were hungry. Mrs. Mann said they were not hungry. She hit them and locked all three of them in the cellar (地下室). This was their punishment for complaining.
When Mrs. Mann looked out of the window, she was surprised to see the beadle (小官吏) at the gate, trying to get in. The beadle was an officer from the government. He thought he was an important officer. He was very fat, but he had a beautiful uniform, which made him feel even more important. When Mrs. Mann saw him, she quickly told her helper to get the three boys out of the cellar and clean their faces and hands. She pretended she was very pleased to see the beadle, whose name was Mr. Bumble, and gave him a glass of gin to drink. Mr. Bumble told Mrs. Mann that he was going to take Oliver away because he was now nine years old.
“We have never been able to find out anything about his father or mother,” he said. “We don’t even know their names. Oliver will work in the workhouse and earn his gruel (稀粥).”
Mrs Mann was surprised nobody knew who Oliver’s parents were and wondered how he got a name.
“I gave it to him,” said the beadle. “I made it up myself.”

Life circle of monarch butterfly
In the last 25 years, the population(总数）of monarch butterflies has reduced by hundreds of millions, according to
(根据) the Wildlife Service Species report. The black and orange butterflies face insecticides (杀虫剂), loss of milkweed—the plant monarchs lay eggs on and the caterpillars’ only food, and habitat (栖息地) loss.
City people making a difference
The smaller population led Field Museum researchers in Chicago to ask: what makes a successful monarch garden Hasle, an ecologist (生态学家) at the Field Museum, and Karen Klinger, a geographer, are working to answer that question. Many stops along the monarchs migratory route (迁徙路线) are trying to help out the butterfly, looking for more places where milkweed might grow. “We think, in one way, cities are giving an important place for a lot of insects (昆虫),” Hasle said. Although the project is still very new, there are already some findings. Unlike some other field work derailed by the environment, the monarch project worked well with more people staying home to watch over their gardens.
According to the weekly reports participants (参与者) sent, more successful gardens had more milkweed and flowering plants or much larger fields. But Klinger said one participant with only one plant watched eggs change all the way to a chrysalis. “So,” she said, “you just need one plant.”

In 2020, during the second season of the study, the number of caterpillars dropped, even though there were more participants.
Chicago saw a hot, dry summer in 2020, which may have affected (影响) the health of the milkweed plants. In 2021, the reports out of Mexico noted illegal logging (非法砍伐), as well as trees hit by wind and drought (干旱). But they also said spring and summer weather were hard for milkweed flowers and egg development in the southern U.S., which affected the growth of butterflies.
Not giving up
Now is the perfect time to start planning to plant some milkweed, Hasle and Klinger said.
“The best thing to do is what you can do,” Hasle said. “One milkweed plant in a pot (花盆) on your window board is doing something. Probably it gives you something to look forward to during the boring winter in Chicago.”

In a little fishing village in Southern Thailand, there are some boys who like to play football. They play with a lot of excitement and interest, running, shouting, jumping and kicking. The story of the Panyee Football Club began in 1986 when some young boys from the village were watching the World Cup Football Championships on TV. But the villagers laughed at them. They asked, “Are you crazy Have you ever played football before You’ve already formed a team, but have you found a football field yet How can you practise ”
The boys made up their mind to make their dream come true. They used old fishing boats and pieces of wood to make a floating (漂浮的) football field. They practised for hours every day, even when it was very wet and smooth after a heavy rain. In their first year, they made it to the semifinals of the local football competition.
The story reminds us that anything is possible only if we set our mind to chase our dreams. The boys never gave up their dream, even when they faced many difficulties. Their hard work paid off, and they became champions.

How to spend May Day
May Day is coming. This week we will have a class meeting. In the meeting, we will talk about how to spend May Day meaningfully.
In the past, people did some boring things, such as chatting online, playing games, watching short videos and so on. Nowadays, people usually do something meaningful they like. Some like to travel around, some like to read online, others often exercise to keep healthy in the open air. In my opinion, I like reading most because good books are good friends and they also open up a whole new world to me. Moreover, I also like to travel, because I want to enjoy the beauty of nature.
I think it is meaningful to spend holiday wisely.
