To:Mike
From:Li Hua
Dear Mike,
I'm truly sorry to hear that you had a quarrel with your parents. I
understand how you feel, as it's natural to want to relax after graduation.
However, as the saying goes, “Every coin has two sides.” Your parents’
request also comes from their love and concern. Here are a few
suggestions that might help.
First, try to have a calm conversation with your parents. Explain your
feelings and listen to their reasons. You could say, “I understand you
want me to spend time with my grandparents, but I also need some time
to relax.” Second, you can find a way to balance both. For example, you
could spend part of the vacation with your grandparents first and the
rest of the time enjoying yourself. Lastly, plan some enjoyable activities
to share with your grandparents. This way, you can enjoy your time with
them while also having a break.
Remember, family is important. Balancing your needs with family time
can be challenging, but it's also an opportunity to strengthen your
relationships.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,

The film Ne Zha 2 released(上映) on January 29th, 2025, has
become a huge success in the film industry. Directed by Jiaozi(Yang Yu),
it continued the exciting story of Ne Zha and Ao Bing from the first movie.
By February 3rd, it had taken over 4 billion yuan (about $550 million) at

People show emotional support through encouragement, such as
kind words. Emotional support can also come from spiritual(精神的)
beliefs or community activities. Some people are naturally good at giving
emotional support, but it doesn't come easily for everyone.

When you want to support someone emotionally, asking questions is a
good start. However, simply asking “How can I support you ” may not
always be the best. People may not know what they need in a difficult
situation. Instead, ask questions based on the situation or their state of
mind, like “You seem a little upset. Would you like to talk about it ” You
can also use phrases like “I'm sorry you're dealing with that situation. It
sounds so painful.”
Avoiding Judgement(评价)
Nobody likes to be judged. When people face difficulties because of
their actions, they may have already judged themselves. They don't want
criticism(批评)when they look for support. Avoid questions that sound
blaming(责怪), like “So what made them become so mad at you ” Even
without direct criticism, your words may sound like that.
Not Giving Advice Without Being Asked
You may think giving advice helps, but usually, people don't want it
unless they ask. If they start to talk about solutions, you can use
reflective(反思性的) questions like “Have you been in a similar situation
before What helped then ”
Supporting Their Solutions
When a friend or partner has a solution to their problem, don't
doubt it immediately. Even if you don't think it will work, avoid telling
them what to do. If there's no risk or danger, just support them. If they
ask for your opinion, give gentle guidance instead of strong criticism.
( )11. How many pieces of tips about giving emotional support does
the writer mention
A. 3. B. 4. C. 5. D. 6.
( )12. Which of the following can be put into the “ ▲ ”
A. Talking Directly B. Asking Properly
C. Caring for Their Mind D. Finding Out the Situation
( )13. Which of the following questions shows your emotional
support best
A. Why can't you change yourself
B. Is there anything I can do for you
C. I told you that it can't work. How could you forget it
D. I know you're disappointed. Would you like to tell me about it
( )14. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to
A. An opinion. B. A question.
C. A suggestion. D. A problem.
( )15. What does the writer want to tell us from the passage
A. How do people seek support
B. How can we give helpful advice
C. How can we be supportive persons
D. How should friends help each other

Humans have been using plants for medicine since very early
times. These plants are still widely used in traditional medicine all over
the world. Lately, scientists found out for the first time that
chimpanzees(黑猩猩) also look for forest fruits to heal themselves when
sick.
Researchers from Oxford University in the UK studied how
chimpanzees act at the Budongo Central Forest Reserve in Uganda. They
watched a male chimpanzee with an injured hand searching for the
leaves of a fern(蕨类植物). The fern might have made the swelling(肿块)
in the chimpanzee's hand go down. Another chimpanzee with a parasite(
寄 生 虫 ) problem looked for the part of a certain tree which might
alleviate(减 轻 ) the animal's problem and make the chimpanzee feel
better.
The research team said there was a strong link between the
chimpanzees’ illnesses and injuries and the good - for - healing things in
the plants they ate. The researchers tested parts from plants that
chimpanzees don't usually eat. They found that 88% of these extracts
could fight bacteria(细菌), and 33% of them could reduce swelling.
Researcher Dr Elodie Freymann said, “The results about the
medicine - like effects show that the chimpanzees in Budongo eat
several plants that are really good for healing some illnesses.” She also
said that maybe in the future, these animals’ behaviors could help us use
more natural cures in our lives.
Maybe it's study of we can learn from chimpanzees and use more
plants from nature to treat our own illnesses. This could be a great way
to stay healthy while also being kind to the environment.
( )16. What does the underlined word “heal” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Treat. B. Heat.
C. Comfort. D. Lift.
( )17. Which of the following is TRUE according to Paragraph 2
A. A female chimpanzee with an injured hand searched for fern leaves.
B. Researchers from Cambridge University studied chimpanzees in
Uganda.
C. The cat - thorn tree part was used by a chimpanzee to make its
swelling go down.
D. Chimpanzees in the study seemed to look for plants to help with their
health problems.
( )18. How did the researchers find the relation between the
chimpanzees’ illnesses and the good - for - healing things
A. By doing some tests.
B. By reading some reports.
C. By watching some videos.
D. By making some predictions.
( )19. According to Dr Elodie Freymann, what’s the purpose of the
study on chimpanzees

C. It could help humans use more natural cures in daily life.
D. It reflects that chimpanzees have a different social system.

Tanghulu, a beloved traditional Chinese snack, has a fascinating
origin. It's said that during the Song Dynasty, a wife of Emperor
Guangzong of Song was seriously ill. A doctor asked her to eat
hawthorns(山楂) on bamboo sticks boiled in syrup(糖浆). Surprisingly,
the wife got better. This method then spread among the people, giving
birth to the tanghulu we know today.
Making tanghulu is an art. First, pick fresh, big and round fruits like
hawthorns, strawberries, oranges or grapes. Wash and dry them, then
thread(穿成串) them onto bamboo sticks. Next, make the syrup. Finally,
dip the fruit - strung sticks into the syrup, and put them on a plate to
cool.
The taste of tanghulu is truly special. The outer sugar coating is
really crispy while the inner fruit is juicy, offering a blend of sweet - and -
sour flavor.
In modern times, tanghulu production has seen some changes.
Machine - made production makes it easier to make tanghulu in large
numbers. Vacuum - packing(真空包装) can make it stay fresh longer.
Also, there are a lot of new ideas. New tastes like chocolate - covered
tanghulu or ones with nuts on top have appeared. They are also made
into lovely shapes to draw in young buyers.
Let's look forward to more wonderful creations of this traditional
snack in the future.
