Nigeria is a hot and dry country in Africa where electricity is not available to many families. Most people grow and sell their own fruit and vegetables. Keeping them fresh in the hot place is a real challenge. Without a fridge, most fresh food goes bad in a couple of days. Throwing away the food means losing money for poor families. Eating the bad food causes serious health problems.
A local teacher, Mohammed Bah Abba, was worried about this problem and decided to solve it. As a boy born into a family of clay pot makers, Mohammed knew that these traditional clay pots could keep water even when the weather was dry. In the 1990s, he used this traditional knowledge to invent a cooling system. It worked as a “desert fridge”.
Mohammed's cooling system is made up of two pots--a small pot inside a big pot. In the space between the two clay pots, there is wet sand. People put the fruit and vegetables in the small pot, and cover it with a piece of wet cloth. Then they leave the big pot in a dry place. When water in the sand evaporates(蒸发), the temperature in the pots will go down.In this way,the food in the small pot is cool.
Mohammed's “desert fridge” has improved the lives of thousands of people. So in 2001, he won the Rolex Award for Enterprise.

Friendship can't be measured(测量)nor can it be weighed. We stopped a few people on the street to find out what part friendship played in their lives. Here is what they said.

“The importance of friendship in my life is more than what I can put into words. My childhood friends recently pulled me through hard times when I went through a divorce(离婚).” said Gemina.
Jane, 21, a student, was in a hurry when we stopped her to ask her the question. She left us with just one line which makes a lot of sense. Jane said. “We all should wake up and realize the true importance of friendship because friends accept you for what you are, not for what you can be.” We think Jane has hit the nail(钉子)on the head.
Tom, 42, said, “I didn't realize the importance of friendship until it was too late. I didn't keep in touch with friends, but now I have realized that life is much better with friends around.” Are we all learning from Tom's lesson in life
We also met a policeman on duty at the corner of the street. “My friends and I love sharing a beer each weekend. For centuries, the power of Chinese emperors fell with their control of the Grand Canal.Today, this waterway is shorter than it once was, but it is still the longest man-made river in the world.
The first canal system began around the year 605. China's Emperor Yang realized that he needed a better way to feed his army and move food quickly from China's southern rice-growing area to the north. So, he ordered to build the first part of the Grand Canal, connecting other canals, lakes and rivers. Over the next 500 years, the canal's importance grew. However, by 1127, many parts had got worse. In 1279, Kublai Khan began to repair and build new parts of the canal.
That created a more direct north-south way to and from Beijing. Future rulers continued to improve the waterway, and it became more and more important.
Besides moving rice around China, the Grand Canal also connected the south and the north in other ways. Soldiers, businessmen and artists transported ideas, local foods, and cultures from one part of China to another. It's said that is how Peking duck, a dish from Shandong Province, and the Peking Opera, from Anhui and Hubei, were both brought north through the canal.
Even today, the country's watery highway plays an important role in China. Boats carry tons of coal, food, and other goods to points between Hangzhou and Jining —now the northernmost city the canal reaches.
This development comes at a price, though. “Traditionally we talk about 18 main cities on the Grand Canal, and each had something special about it.” said Zhou Xinhua, the former director of the Grand Canal Museum in Hangzhou. “But now many of these cities are all the same: a thousand people with one face.”
66.Why was the first part of the Grand Canal built
A. To help the army move quickly from the north to the south.
B. To make people from the north be able to visit South China.
C. To transport food from the southern part of China to the north.
D. To improve the communication between the north and the south.
67.Why is the example of Peking Opera used in Paragraph 4
A. To explain why the Grand Canal was improved.
B. To introduce the development of the Grand Canal.
C. To tell the change of the Grand Canal's role nowadays.
D. To show how the Grand Canal helped with cultural exchange.
68.Which of the following can best describe the Grand Canal in history
A. A transport tool. B. A national lifeline.
C. A place of interest. D. A great gift of nature.
69.What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. People in the cities on the canal live the same life.
B. Each city needs to find its special way to develop.
C. The development of the canal also brings a problem.
D. Protecting the canal is not so important as it was before.

Scientists have discovered the world's largest known field of seagrass with the aid of some unusual helpers: tiger sharks.
Seagrass usually grows in shallow waters. It grows in thick fields, known as meadows (草地). These seagrass meadows help clean the ocean's water, and provide shelter for lots of sea life. They are also a big help in the fight against climate change. That's because they store huge amounts of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). This harmful pollution is making global warming worse. Damaging these seagrass meadows will only further release (释放) this pollution back into the atmosphere.
Though they're very important, scientists don't have a good idea of the size and number of the world's seagrass meadows. Trying to find these meadows from above the sea waters can be quite difficult. The world's oceans are so large in size that it's simply not possible to make a deep study of them by diving. So a team of scientists decided to have tiger sharks help with the research. These animals were chosen as research helpers because they spend a lot of their time in and around seagrass meadows.
Researchers attached cameras to the fins of seven tiger sharks. The sharks then carried the cameras and travelled for miles over the sea floor. The cameras were designed to fall off after a few hours and then float back up to the surface. Tracking signals helped the scientists find the floating cameras and to collect the videos the sharks had taken.
The scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest seagrass meadow ever discovered, which could be as large as 92,000 square kilometres. The discovery means that the world has about 40 per cent more seagrass meadows than scientists had thought.
The project demonstrates (示范) a powerful new way to explore the ocean. In other words, underwater animals can help us learn more about life under the sea. Animals like tiger sharks are going to take us to new places that we didn't even know.
70.What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. The importance of seagrass to the world.
B. The situation that scientists know about seagrass.
C. The possibility that scientists study the meadows further.
D. The reason why scientists need tiger sharks to help with the research.
71.Which best shows the structure of the whole passage
A. ①/②③④⑤/⑥ B. ①②③④⑤/⑥ C. ①/②③④⑤⑥ D. ①②③/④/⑤⑥
72.What's the best title of the article
A. The Seagrass Meadows of the Ocean
B. Research Helpers of the Seagrass
C. The New Way of Protecting the Ocean
D. The Man's New Helpers of the Ocean
