I was coming home from school on the bus when I got a text message from Mike. It was very short: Mkt X7. UGNT. I knew it meant he wanted to meet me at the Market Cross at 7 o’clock that evening and it was something urgent (紧急的). It was a bit unusual. We’d planned to meet after school on Friday to prepare for our birdwatching as usual.
Let me give you some background. My name’s Don. I’m fifteen and I go to Blueway Comprehensive School. Mike is the same age and goes to the local grammar school, but we’ve been friends since junior school. We’ve been birdwatching together since we were 11. We do it every week, read about it and use the Internet to learn about birds, and we’re members of a club for birdwatchers, too.
At 6.45 I walked to Market Cross. Soon I saw him standing on the side of the road.
“Hi, Mike. What’s this about ” I asked at once.
“Just wait a moment until we’re away from the crowd and I’ll tell you,” he answered mysteriously. We walked over to the yard and sat on a bench.
“After this week of good weather followed by last night’s storm, I thought there might be some good birds about,” he said.
“And were there ” I asked. A smile played over Mike’s face. “Yes, osprey (鱼鹰)” he said very quietly. “What! ” I shouted. “Osprey, and we’d better keep it secret.” he said again. I sat looking at him with my mouth open.
I should explain. An osprey is a big hunting bird, which catches fish. There weren’t any in Britain because they’d been hunted too much. In 1954 a pair nested (筑巢) in Scotland. They were protected by a society because lots of people wanted osprey eggs for their collections. We’ve never seen one in our village.
Mike continued, “So, shall we go birdwatching tomorrow morning ”
“But do you think it’ll be there ” I asked.
“Birdwatcher!” he said. By which he meant that if I was a birdwatcher, I should know that nobody could say what a bird would or wouldn’t do at a particular (特定的) time.
“So, are you coming ”
“Oh... oh... alright,” I said, knowing my parents would be very angry. They thought I spent too much time birdwatching.
29. Which of the following is true about Mike and Don

C. They go to the same school. D. They began birdwatching 1 year ago.
30. Which is the right order of what happened in the story

②Don received a message from Mike on his way home.
③Mike invited Don to watch ospreys the next morning.
④Don and Mike planned to meet after school on Friday.
⑤Mike discovered an unusual kind of bird called osprey.
A. ②④①③⑤ B. ②⑤④③① C. ④②⑤③① D. ④⑤②①③
31. How did Don feel when he heard that Mike saw an asprey
A. Worried B. Scared. C. Surprised. D. Proud.
32. What would the two boys probably do next
A. They would collect birds’ eggs for their collections.

C. They would share their finding of an osprey with others.

Imagine a city built as a line across the desert. It can run on 100% clean energy and 100% renewable water. That sounds impossible, but it’s becoming a reality.
Saudi Arabia is building such a city called The Line. It starts from the mountains of Northwest Saudi Arabia and pushes its way to the Red Sea. With an area of just 34 square kilometres, it can be home to 9 million people. The Line is 500 metres tall, 200 metres wide and 170 kilometres long, with two huge mirror walls standing on its both sides.
To put living experiences and the natural environment first, The Line is designed to have three layers. The top layer has no roads or cars, keeping over 95% of the nature around. Carefully designed environment makes the best balance of sunshine, trees and other natural sights. The middle layer is for services. All of them are operated by AI. Robots and a huge man-made moon make the city a technology paradise. From shopping malls to sports areas, wherever you go, you will be amazed at how convenient life can be. The lowest layer is the most important part which shows how fast the city runs. The Line’s high-speed railway powered by electricity makes it possible to travel end to end in 20 minutes.
The plan started in early 2021 and is expected to finish its first stage in 2030. However, not everyone shows enough confidence in the plan. Environmentalists argue that mirror walls of The Line will bring danger to animals. For example, birds may hit onto the glass or even die when they migrate every spring and autumn. Besides, some commentators also question whether the city will be built successfully. But Tarek Qaddumi, the director of the plan, seems sure, “We hope to get faster, better and greener results, with less environmental influence. It will set a new standard for future city life.”
33. What is the most special feature of The Line according to the passage
A. It is a city that will be built under the Red Sea.
B. It is a city that will have mirror-like walls on both sides.
C. It is a city that will have no natural environment within its borders.
D. It is a city that will be built in a narrow and long shape across the desert.
34. Which picture shows the three layerss of The Line
A. B. C. D.
35. Which best explains the underlined word “migrate” in Paragraph 4
A. To begin using a new computer system.
B. To move information from one computer to another.
C. To move from one place to another according to the seasons.
D. To travel to a new place or country usually to find work and live there.
36. Why does the writer write the passage
A. To tell who will build The Line.
B. To advise people to visit The Line.
C. To introduce a future city called The Line.
D. To show the difficulties of building The Line.
(D)
We are getting used to having robots in our homes, stores, and factories. What about on stage In fact, the word robot comes from a 1920 science-fiction play. In Rossum’s Universal Robots, people performed as the machine-like creatures. Recently, some directors and artists have invited actual robots to share the stage in dances and other performances. Catie Cuan is one of them. “Robots are for everyone,” she says.
Cuan began her career as a dancer and choreographer—a person who maps out the movements of dancers. But she fell in love with robots and has pioneered a new field called robot choreography. Today she’s studying robotics at Stanford University in Northern California.
You might imagine robots would dance like machines. After all, that’s how the popular dance “the robot” looks. Most robots today, however, can move in a more life-like manner. It takes time and effort to program robots to do the movements Cuan wants. But the results, she says, “will surprise you.”
At first, Cuan knew little about robot choreography. In 2022, she wrote, choreographed and performed the stage show In Her Prime. She danced with two other women and two Boston Dynamics spot robots. In the dance, the robots stayed behind a screen so the audience only saw their shadows. Cuan says that cave paintings inspired her.
In the media, Cuan says, “Robots are often described negatively.” They may seem alien, cold, or scary. Seeing a robot dance may make the technology seem fun, attractive, or friendly instead. Sometimes after her performances, the audience tell her that the dance changes the way they think about robots.
Robots may seem like they’re all about maths and engineering. But, as Cuan suggests, they belong in art, too. “We as humans have been making art a lot longer than we’ve been doing maths,” she says. She points out that we use art and dance to make sense of the world. Cuan thinks that performances like hers will help people feel more at home with robots. “We need to dance with robots to make sense of them.” she says.
37. Why did Catie Cuan use a screen in her dance In Her Prime with robots
A. To show the robots’ shadows. B. To display cave paintings.
C. To hide the robots’ movements. D. To catch the attention of the audience.
38. According to Catie Cuan, what is one way robots can be connected to art
A. Robots can replace human artists.
B. Robots can teach people about art.
C. Robots can only be used in engineering.
D. Robots can help people understand the world through art.
39. The following sentences “This is only one of many dances Cuan has performed with robots. Her goal is to show people new ways to relate to these machines.” would best be placed at the beginning of ________.
A. Paragraph 2 B. Paragraph 4 C. Paragraph 5 D. Paragraph 6
40. What can we learn from the article
A. The word robot comes from In Her Prime.
B. Dancing with robots can help us understand them better.
C. The audience will develop an interest in robotics engineering.
D. Some students at Stanford University enjoy studying robotics.
