Like many American teenagers, Dick wanted to be a professional (职业) sportsman but he had a problem he wasn’t very good at any sport! He didn’t play football very well and although he was very tall he wasn’t a very good basketball player either. He tried running, throwing and jumping, and of all these events, he found that he wasn’t too bad at the high jump.
At that time there were two popular styles of jumping over the bar. There was the scissors (剪刀). The jumper jumped over using his legs like a pair of scissors. However, in the other style, jumpers jumped over face first. The best height he could jump was 1.63 m. It wasn’t bad but it was a long way from the world record of 2.23 m.
One afternoon, Dick decided to do something totally different. Instead of jumping over face first, he turned around and jumped over back first. The results were amazing. In a few hours he improved his personal best by 21 cm. Over the next months he spent all his time practising, getting better and better. The last time you went to buy a coffee or a Coke, what kind of cup did it come in
In Petaluma, California, US, to-go drinks are now served in a type of purple cup. Each cup has a QR code (二维码). More than 60 special bins (桶) have been set up around the city to collect these cups. Workers will come later to clean them and send them back to shops for reuse.
The city-wide project is the first of its kind in the US. It aims to stop the use of disposable (一次性的) cups, which have been around since the early 1900s. Before the invention of disposable cups, people shared wooden or metal (金属的) cups for drinking. Lawrence Luellen, a lawyer in Boston, US, was worried about the spread (传播) of germs (细菌). So he invented a disposable “Health Cup” made of paper in 1907. It became popular quickly, especially after the serious Spanish flu in 1918.
Disposable cups are common. Today’s disposable cups also have polystyrene (聚苯乙烯) in them. This type of plastic helps keep the drinks warm. However, it takes about 500 years to completely break up. Every year, people in the US throw away 50 billion single-use cups, according to The Guardian. This is bad for our planet. For example, polystyrene turns into small pieces with time. Animals may eat them.
Since its start on Aug.1, the purple cup project in Petaluma has received wide attention. More than 30 businesses have joined in, including Starbucks and Coca-Cola. They try to see how many of them are being reused with the QR codes on the cups. The project will end in November. What comes next depends on how it goes.

Sports and I
As students, we can do different kinds of sports after class.
As for me, I often walk on the playground for half an hour or play football with my friends after school. My favorite sport is running. I run for an hour every morning. I only need to buy a pair of comfortable sports shoes for it. It costs very little. There is no doubt that doing sports is helpful for me. It can help me keep healthy and strong. What’s more, when I feel stressed, some sports can relax myself. The most important is that I can make friends when we do sports.
Let’s do more sports. In this way, we can be healthy and happy every day.
