A new study says that if you can’t stand on one leg for 10 seconds when you’re older， you might have a higher chance of dying in the next 10 years.This simple balance test could be used during regular health checks for middle-aged and older people.
As we get older， our fitness， strength and flexibility decrease， but our balance is usually okay until our 50s.Then it starts to get worse quickly.Other studies have shown that people who can’t stand on one leg are more likely to fall and have memory problems.
In this study， 1，702 people aged 51 to 75 in Brazil were asked to stand on one leg without help.They had to place the front of the free foot behind the standing leg， keep their arms by their sides and eyes fixed straight ahead.They could try up to three times.“Being able to do this is important for older people and shows how fit and healthy they are，” says Dr.Claudio Gil Araújo.
The researchers had monitored these people for seven years.During that time， 123 of them died.More people who couldn’t do the balance test died （17.5%） than those who could stand for 10 seconds （4.5%）.The study found that people who couldn’t do the test had a higher risk of dying， even when considering other things like age， weight and health problems.
