Makenzie’s mother was so excited they were eating at the newest restaurant in town. Ever since her father passed away, the two of them seldom ate out. They had to watch carefully the money they spent each week. However, tonight was a celebration. Makenzie’s mom had received a promotion (升职) at her job and a gift card from her kind friends to go out and celebrate with her daughter.
As the two sat down to eat, the waiter asked if they would like an appetizer (开胃菜). Makenzie’s mother ordered a sampler platter (拼盘) for them to share, and she wondered what all would come with the appetizer. Soon the waiter brought a large dish to their table.
Makenzie’s mother put two fried pieces of meat on her plate. She knew it wasn’t chicken, but she did not know exactly what her mother was expecting her to try.
Trusting her mother, Makenzie bit (咬) into the tender (嫩的), fried meat. It was delicious and tasted just like chicken. She quickly ate both pieces, hoping there would be more for her to try. She almost wished she hadn’t even ordered a meal. She realized that the appetizer was so delicious that it could easily serve as a full meal on its own.
When the waiter came back to refill their drinks, he looked at Makenzie’s plate and then at her as he spoke, “So, I see you really like frog legs; I’ve never tried them before, but I’ve been told our restaurant makes the best ones around.”
Makenzie stared in horror at the remaining food on her plate and then at the waiter. She managed to nod her head but could not say anything. She looked up at her mother, but her mom looked just as shocked as she did.
Finally, Makenzie managed a smile as she picked up the rest of the appetizer ready to take another bite. She might have been eating frog legs, but they tasted just like chicken.

For a long time, people did not know much about lightning (闪电) or how it forms. Now we know that lightning is electricity traveling between the positive and negative parts of the cloud and ground. There are actually different types of lightning in different shapes and sizes, depending on the weather conditions. However, scientists are still unsure as to why some of them appear.
The most common is intra-cloud lightning, where the lightning travels between different parts of the same cloud and never reaches the ground. We see it as a light that spreads within a cloud. Inter-cloud lightning, where electricity travels between different clouds, is less often seen.
The most dangerous is cloud-to-ground lightning. Lightning travels from the bottom of a cloud to the earth, and generally hits the tallest thing it can find, which is usually a building, a tree, a boat out at sea, or a mountaintop. If a person becomes the tallest point and is hit, it can be fatal. Lightning causes about 58 deaths every year in the United States, according to the National Weather Service.
An unusual and beautiful form of lightning is spider lightning. It got its name because it looks like it is “crawling” (匍匐前进) under the cloud. It is slow enough for people to watch as it moves across the sky, crossing distances of up to 120 kilometers. Another rare kind of lightning is ball lightning. Very few people have seen it. The ones who have describe it as a red, yellow, or orange ball of light. It floats (飘移) along the ground and disappears with a loud bang.

【56题答案】
【答案】例文
Let students pick their seats or let teachers assign seats
Some students like to pick their own seats in the classroom while others believe that teachers should assign seats.
As for me, I prefer letting teachers assign seats to us. The main reason is that students can communicate with classmates of different abilities and characters. For example, stronger students can help those who may find it hard to get good grades. In this case, they can develop a sense of teamwork. Secondly, assigned seating also helps to avoid distractions. Friends sitting together may chat and make some noise instead of paying attention to the lesson. By placing students in this way, they can keep quiet and listen carefully. Lastly, assigned seating is good for children’s social skills. By sitting next to someone unfamiliar, they have the chance to build new friendship.
In conclusion, while some students may hope to choose their own seats, I believe that having teachers assign seats is more beneficial.
