Here are a few facts about the Grand Canyon you probably don’t know.We don’t really know how old it isIt has long been believed that the Colorado River began carving the Grand Canyon about 6 million years ago, but a study contained a real shocker, suggesting that the process may have begun as far back as 70 million years. In all likelihood, the Grand Canyon as we know it today started out as a series of smaller canyons 70 million years ago, but most of the canyon did not begin to take shape until much more recently. The Grand Canyon creates its own weatherOf all Grand Canyon facts, this one is pretty cool — no pun (双关语) intended. Sudden changes in elevation (海拔) have great effects on temperature and rainfall, so the weather you’re experiencing could change largely depending on where you are in the Grand Canyon. The coldest, wettest weather station in the area is the Bright Angel Ranger Station on the North Rim, while the hottest (and one of the driest) is just 8 miles away at Phantom Ranch. There are lots of fossils in the areaWhile the dinosaurs might have missed out on seeing the Grand Canyon, lots of other fossils have been found that suggest other creatures often visited the area. They range from ancient marine fossils dating back 1.2 billion years to fairly recent land mammals that left their remains in canyon caves about 10,000 years ago.Fish are relatively uncommon in the areaBefore modern flood control measures, the Colorado River provided a uniquely difficult habitat for fish, with heavy silt, frequent floods, and temperatures ranging from extreme heat in summer to sub-freezing in winter. As a result, only eight fish species are native to the Grand Canyon, six of which are found nowhere outside of the Colorado River.21. What is the weather like in the Great Canyon A. It is unusually cold. B. It changes from place to place.C. It is pretty cool. D. It is extremely hot.22. Why are fish relatively unusual in the area A. The temperature here is relatively stable.B. It has a special geological phenomenon.C. There are eight fish species unique to the world.D. It offers tough habitats for fish with extreme temperature.23. Which section of a magazine is the text most likely from A. Life. B. Stories. C. Geography. D. Science.BThe eyes of an artist are special. They can see things others can’t notice and create beautiful art forms from their imagination. In the case of 27-year-old Emily Shifflet, she creates her art literally using only her eyes, as she lives with Rett syndrome, a rare genetic and developmental disorder that limits speech and movement.“Although Emily lives with a condition that has silenced her, she is still able to communicate and express herself through art, and she is an example that people living with Rett syndrome can have lives filled with purpose and creativity,” said Emily’s mother, Jenny Shifflet. Emily creates her art using a special digital software operated by her eyes called Tobii Dynavox. She was able to learn and practice her painting by using the digital painter software on her communication device.Meghan Winslow, owner of a family art studio, said, “I love the diversity of the different designs based upon the different painting tools that she can select. It’s an amazing mix of science, technology and art.”Emily has always been exposed to music and art. Tobii Dynavox has really helped her communicate how she was feeling. The painting tool was truly a game-changer. “Emily could finally use the only muscle she has to be creative,” Jenny said. Jenny noticed the art Emily was creating a few years ago and thought they could make nice gifts. She now sells her one-of-a-kind artwork through her website, Eye Gaze Designs by Emily. “Her artwork is a gift,” Jenny said. “It is showing people that individuals with different abilities can be creative and successful in different ways. That’s what we want to show.”Emily’s artwork has also appeared in Hershey Medical Center and The Art of Pennsylvania. She also serves as a guest artist at SPLAT-A Family Art Studio in Annville and Hershey, Pennsylvania. She simply continues to shine.24. What’s special about Emily Shifflet A. She is able to paint with her eyes. B. She has trained many artistic talents.C. She is good at developing digital software. D. She can see herself reflected in artists eyes.25. What do we know about Tobii Dynavox A. It can assist in artistic creation. B. It’s a digital product of a painter.C. It can perform an eye operation. D. It’s a treatment for Rett syndrome.26. Why does Jenny sell her daughter’s artwork online A. To make it gifts for people in need. B. To raise money for people with disabilities.C. To inspire people to seek their own success. D. To invite people to take up art creation in life.27. What does the text indicate A. Art originates from life but is higher than life.B. Technology has made our life worth living.C. The early bird catches the worm.D. Technology breaks down barriers.CThere’s an inner desire amongst most people to explore our planet. There’s this sense in modern society that somehow we will find a better existence or we’ll find happiness by going on holiday. I think we’ve almost been conditioned to become tourists, to the extent that a lot of people engage in tourism without actually considering why they’re doing so.There are plenty of people who will go to the same place every year, because they’re comfortable and familiar with it. People are experiencing less and less the places they are at. They might be there in body, but not necessarily in mind, because a lot of people are constantly thinking: “How am I going to present myself to my social media group back home through my posts on Facebook or Instagram ”But this is just one side of the problem. On the other side, our travel has taken a toll on the environment. It is reported that the carbon emissions from air travel accounted for 2.5% of global emissions in 2019, and this figure may be three times by 2050.I admit that there has been a considerable increase in people’s awareness about the environment. And some people say that this can eventually lead to a shift in our behavior as tourists. However, I can’t share their optimism. A lot of research has been done into the extent to which tourists are willing to adapt their behavior. And even those people who regularly consume or behave in an environmentally friendly fashion actually temporarily forget their environmental commitments, and behave like normal tourists. They do suffer some kind of eco-guilt, but nevertheless they continue to travel, and they continue to fly.I’m old enough to remember when tourism was just the summer holiday, and you would look forward to those two weeks a year when you would go on holiday. It was special and meaningful, but nowadays it is so easy to travel. Travel is now seen as a right, not as a privilege. However, to some extent, I hope there will be a significant rise in the cost of travel, or at least in air travel. In my opinion, only in this way can people realize the value of travel experience and really enjoy it. Also, only in this way can many problems arising with the development of tourism be properly solved.28. What is the problem with most tourists according to the author A. They don’t care about our planet at all. B. They post too many photos on social media.C. They can hardly find the right place to explore. D. They fail to have a meaningful traveling experience.29. What does the underlined part “taken a toll on” in Paragraph 3 probably mean A. Improved. B. Damaged. C. Saved. D. Shaped.30. What can we learn from Paragraph 4 A. Tourists can hardly be affected by environmental awareness.B. Tourists are unaware of the effect of their behavior.C. Tourists’ environmental awareness hasn’t been increased.D. Tourists find it hard to travel without harming the environment.31. Why does the author hope airline tickets will be more expensive A. To limit the development of tourism. B. To create a sense of equality in society.C. To help people value their traveling experience. D. To make people less excited about travelling.DImagine you’re purchasing a lottery ticket(彩票), and your heart races as you check the numbers. To your amazement, you’ve matched five out of six! What will you do next Will you buy another ticket For most people, the answer is a big “Yes”.When we come close to achieving a goal, we often gain a powerful energy that can drive us toward future success. Monica Wadhwa, a marketing professor at Temple University, suggests that not winning can actually motivate us more than winning itself. In her studies, Wadhwa conducted various experiments to test this concept. In one experiment, participants played a cellphone game with the task of revealing eight diamonds. After the game, those who nearly won — by getting seven diamonds — walked faster to claim their reward than both winners and losers. “Their motivation is getting intensified (加强), but then they miss it ... So what happens to this motivation It hooks on, giving you the energy for the next goal that you have.” Wadhwa explains, “As for the winners, they inch toward their goal, they achieve it, and their motivation is satisfied, which leaves them with no need to fight for anything else.”However, this fire in your belly should be used wisely. Such motivation can push you toward significant goals, or be wasted on distractions. In another experiment at a fashion-accessory store where shoppers were given scratch-off lottery tickets, the near-winners shopped more and spent more than both winners and losers. To harness (利用) this energy, Wadhwa advises setting goals that are slightly beyond our reach. She encourages managers to establish challenging yet achievable targets for their teams. Additionally, she recommends that parents highlight how close their children came to winning when they experience losses, fostering resilience and motivation. By understanding the unique power of nearly winning, we can turn setbacks into stepping stones for future success. As Wadhwa puts it. “Winners really do not take it all.”32. What’s the purpose of paragraph 1 A. To stress the importance of winning. B. To display harmful effects of the lottery.C. To explain the rules of playing the lottery. D. To illustrate the excitement of nearly winning.33. According to Wadhwa, what motivated the near-winners to act faster A. The eagerness to win another game. B. The unmet desire for winning games.C. The dissatisfaction of not achieving goals. D. The need for immediate recognition or rewards.34. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean A. Feeling energized does not always ensure success.B. You should not let your emotions guide your actions.C. Motivation can lead to unwise choices if not controlled.D. Having strong ambitions always leads to acting carelessly.35. Which statement might Wadhwa agree most A. Parents should take their children’s losses seriously.B. Managers should assign more tasks to star performers.C. Encouraging children to fight for perfection is essential.D. Setting slightly challenging goals can promote motivation.第二节 七选五 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。It seems that deep, long-lasting happiness comes from intangible (无形的) things, rather than things like chocolates and smart-phones. 36 People who have the support of family members and also have strong friendships are more likely to be happy. Feeling protected and respected and knowing you can trust in the people around you is vital. But happiness means you have to give and take. Performing acts of kindness and generosity on a regular basis, for example, listening to a friend in need or carrying a neighbor’s shopping, will make you feel on top of the world. 37 In fact, they say that one smile makes a person feel as good as eating 2,000 bars of chocolates (not all at once, of course). It is not surprising that health is another key contributor to happiness. 38 But being healthy and staying healthy require some effort. A healthy diet is crucial and so is regular exercise. Laziness will not make you happy. Exercising for 20 to 30 minutes a day helps to reduce stress and anxiety and makes you feel more positive and optimistic because it releases endorphins (feel-good chemicals). So, if you have been feeling blue and worrying too much about your exams, get exercising. 39Talking of sleep, do you often wake up feeling miserable 40 Teenagers tend to go to bed too late and have to get up early, so many suffer from a lack of sleep. Tiredness will certainly affect your happiness levels and put you in a bad mood. It also affects your ability to concentrate and may slow your growth. So if you want to be happy and do well at school, try to get at least eight hours of sleep a night. Now that you know the theory, it’s time to put it all into practice.A .You’ll also find that you sleep better.B. Even a simple smile can work wonders.C. One essential factor is human relationships.D. In the end, happiness comes from good sleep.E. If so, it’s probably because you haven’t had enough of it.F. Sustainable happiness may be more spiritual than material.G. Poor health will certainly make you feel down in the mouth.第三部分 语言运用(共四节,满分50分)第一节 完形填空(共15小题;每小题1分,满分15分)I was so excited to cover a new adventure to Qomolangma when I was a journalist. She was the first to make people think about how our actions as humans are causing permanent damage to Earth’s ecosystems. She began as a biologist, specializing in writing about the sea, but she gradually became aware of the dangers of using pesticides like DDT and the way they can harm the whole of the food chain. In 1962, she wrote her classic book Silent Spring to explain these dangers to the general public. The title of Silent Spring refers to the fact that one day all the birds might be dead, leaving us without their beautiful springtime songs. The agricultural and chemical industries reacted negatively to the book, and said she was unprofessional. However, further research by other scientists proved that she was right about the dangers of chemicals used to kill insects. Today, there is a growing movement towards organic food production, but unfortunately the situation overall is still getting worse rather than improving. We must continue to read Rachel Carson’s book and reflect on its message. 展开更多...... 收起↑ 资源预览
