Small Breaks, Big Benefits
Training for a marathon is one route to fitness and building very short “micro walks” into your day may also be a path to better health. Researchers found that when people broke up a walk into periods of 10 to 30 seconds, ___21___ short breaks in between, they used up to 60 per cent more energy than covering the same stretch in one go.
According to the professor of the University of Milan, Dr Francesco Luciano, ___22___ led the study, the main message should be that brief moments of physical activity, such as getting to your feet to make a cup of tea, can make a surprisingly large difference to ___23___ calories you burn.
“Breaking up motionless periods with brief walk greatly increases energy consumed daily and ___24___ (improve) health.” This is the direct quote from Dr Francesco Luciano and his colleagues in Proceedings B, an influential journal ___25___ (publish) to present the latest biological research. The NHS recommends that adults aged 19 to 64 get at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of intense activity weekly. However, research has presented conclusive evidence that even very short intervals of activity ___26___ be beneficial.
The latest research, which hundreds of participants took part in, involved ___27___ (measure) the amount of energy people consumed while walking on an exercise machine or climbing stairs. Ten volunteers walked or climbed for different amounts of time, including short intervals of either 10 or 30 seconds, or longer ___28___ of up to four minutes. After each period of activity, they paused for several minutes. “We found that walking in ___29___ (short) periods requires more energy — and more oxygen — to cover the same walking length, compared to covering it continuously. It’s like a car using more fuel during the first few kilometres,” he said.
While breaking long walks into short intervals might not be practical in terms of length covered, Luciano emphasized that ___30___ possible, people should take a few steps to break up sitting time.
Section B

A. adapting B. cast C. dimension D. distance E. evident F. picture G. preparatory H. referring I. solidified J. sought K. tune
Audrey Flack — A Photo-realist Representative
The photo-realist movement, emerging in the late 1960s and 1970s in the United States and Europe, desired to produce works indistinguishable from high-resolution photographs. Audrey Flack, an American painter and sculptor whose choice of subject matter added a(n) ____31____ to the movement, was one of the first artists to use a projection of a photograph as an aid to painting.
Flack graduated from Yale with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1952 and was influenced by her teacher’s Abstract Expressionist style, ____32____ in her early work. The next year she studied art history at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts. During the late 1950s Flack began to ____33____ herself from this style, which she felt did not communicate effectively or clearly with viewers. She looked to artists such as Spanish Baroque artist Luisa Roldán as models. One representative of her photo-realist paintings was Macarena of Miracles, directly ____34____ to Roldán’s sculpture Virgen de la Macarena, La Esperanza.
During the 1960s, the artist continued to ____35____ her photographic method and her subject matter. Unlike male photo-realists such as Richard Estes and Chuck Close, who chose subjects that avoided emotional content, Flack ____36____ to convey a broader meaning through her work. While going on to create works with sociopolitical commentary, she started to ____37____ everyday items such as handbags and makeup, using them to question their role in shaping female identity.
A significant painting from this period, Farb Family Portrait (1969–70), was the result of a new working technique. Starting with a slide of the family portrait (肖像), Flack ____38____ the photo onto the canvas (画布) and used it as her guide for painting. This method relieved her of having to make ____39____ drawings. She also developed a method of applying paint in layers with an airbrush. Using those innovations, Flack masterfully created a number of symbolic works.
Through these practices, Flack ____40____ her role as a pioneer who expanded photorealism beyond mere copying, implanting it with layered narratives about identity and societal norms.

History of tea lasts throughout thousands of years and crosses into various stories. Nowadays, you can buy hundreds of tea varieties to address many physical health issues, as tea is supported by ____41____ science. However, in ancient times, tea was a philosophical creation, not just a drink — wise men experienced the ____42____ growth through the drinking of tea. Learning about the history of tea is, ____43____, quite fascinating.
Unlike some traditional drinks, tea begins with the tale of an emperor in China, almost 5000 years ago. Around 2700 BC, Emperor Shen Nong discovered tea purely ____44____. From ancient China, tea traveled to Xizang and India. Tang Dynasty in China began to promote the drink for its medicinal benefits, leading to much formal writing on the subject. These ____47____ covered ancient tea preparations and practices, and became significant comparisons to how we use tea in the modern days. Monks (僧侣) and poets ____48____ tea East and West. And then in the 9th century it reached Japan. But it was given the cold shoulder and stayed ____49____ until Matcha, green tea made into powder, was later invented by the locals. And Matcha became the innovation that ____50____ Japan’s passion for tea in the 13th century.
In Ming Dynasty, people started making tea as we do today and businessmen began ____51____ green tea, trading it with explorers throughout Europe and Asia. In the 17th century, Dutch people traded it on the Silk Road. This led tea to England in 1657, where it quickly became a popular drink nationwide, from the royal court to ____52____ citizens. As the British East India Company became the ____53____ trading empire on the planet — controlling around half of the world’s trade in goods, colonies (殖民地) under its administration naturally picked up the habit.
History of tea also involves a way of showing ____54____. The Americans once expressed their anger with the British Empire by throwing tea into the port in Boston. Yet sometime later, through Tea Acts, preferential tax policies, new health food trends and more, tea restored its popularity worldwide.
However the world shifts in some places, such as China, tea ____55____ the national drink of choice.

For 24-year-old Zaire Perry in Texas, making a humble Chinese egg dish she had never heard of a few months ago was the beginning of an unexpected friendship. It began when Perry came across jidan geng, or steamed egg custard, on a popular China-based social platform. Many Americans who came to the platform are inspired to make an attempt at Chinese recipes. Then steamed egg custard, a salty dish not commonly found in Chinese restaurants in U.S., became extremely popular.
Perry was itching to start steaming eggs but was at a loss with the many recipes floating around, until she connected with Hu Xiaoman, a 35-year-old mother in central China. Hu shared her family’s recipe and then applauded Perry’s first attempt as a huge success: silky but firm custard covered with a thin layer of sauce, topped off with spring onions. Hu called Perry “a cooking genius.” Steamed egg custard, involves just eggs, water and salt — simple at first glance, but even Chinese cooks who try it for the first time often fail to get the water-egg proportion right and either overcook or undercook the eggs. Many other Chinese users also clicked their approval on Perry’s post and on the steamed-egg experiments of other Americans.
For Hu and Perry, steamed eggs were just the start. Separated by a 14-hour time difference and a language barrier, the two started sharing cooking tips. Hu said she was surprised to learn from Perry’s recipes that a lot of American dishes are served warm. “My impression of American foods was that they are mostly cold, such as bread slices or salads. Her food made me feel warm, the warmth of family.” From Texas, Perry said, “Food is something that can go beyond language or cultural barriers. I don’t even speak Chinese and she speaks very little English, and yet we’re bonding over recipes.”
With the help of recent translation feature on the platform, Hu and Perry have gone on to share experiences and photos of their daily lives, mirroring the upgrade of friendly interactions between Americans and Chinese people. As many netizens have recognized, the platform’s focus on cultural content such as lifestyle and traveling does contribute to the change.

Beneath its icy surface, the Antarctic Ocean — a vast and remote wilderness — houses a hidden world of microscopic life, including clouds of krill (磷虾). These tiny creatures, just a few inches long, are among the most plentiful and important animals on Earth.
Rod Downie, chief polar adviser at WWF-UK, describes Antarctic krill as the “superheroes of the Southern Ocean.” They serve as a critical food source for marine wildlife, including whales, penguins, seals, and seabirds. They feed on microscopic plants in sea ice, which absorb CO2, and are in turn eaten by whales. When whales release waste, it fertilizes marine plants that help cool the planet. However, the unsustainable fishing of krill could disturb this cycle.
Downie says, “We urgently need to protect krill habitats within a network of marine protected areas. This project could give us a new tool to help monitor and safeguard this vital species.”
But monitoring these organisms presents a grand challenge for scientists. Traditional methods, such as ship-based surveys and sampling, are time-consuming, expensive, and geographically limited. Scientists are using slight differences in seawater colour to count Antarctic krill from space. Dr Cait McCarry, a researcher from the University of Strathclyde, recently returned from Antarctica, where she conducted experiments to measure this effect. She explained, “We start with seawater, then add a krill and measure how much light the water absorbs. Then we add another krill and take another measurement.” This process helps scientists understand how krill concentration affects ocean colour, enabling them to track krill populations from space.
The technology isn’t without its limitations. Factors such as cloud cover, sea ice, and variations in water clarity can affect the accuracy of satellite measurements. Furthermore, while satellite data provides information about the overall biomass, it doesn’t provide detailed information on the species composition or the health of individual organisms. And in such cases, field studies, with its unique capacity for on-the-ground investigation, are ready to assume an essential role for a more comprehensive understanding.
From the seemingly insignificant variations in seawater color to the complex interplay of life within the Antarctic food web, scientists continue to reveal the complicated workings of this vital ecosystem. Their dedication and the innovative tools they employ offer hope for a future where we can better understand and protect the wonders of our planet.
63. Krill are described as “superheroes of the Southern Ocean” because ______.
A. they provide an essential monitoring method
B. their vast species dominate the Antarctic Ocean
C they regulate the temperature of Earth in a certain way
D. their movements indicate ocean temperatures precisely
64. It can be concluded that ______.
A. light absorption changes with krill concentration
B. krill’s waste helps plants absorb CO2 more efficiently
C. the species of deep-sea plants are enriched due to krill
D. krill are mainly threatened by natural hunters like whales
65. What can be inferred from the passage
A. Oceanic research centers around marine life’s complex interactions.
B. Though minor now, water color changes promise future discoveries.
C. Given overfishing, greater emphasis should be laid on the composition of krill species.
D. A full understanding of krill requires integration of satellite monitoring and field studies.
66. What is the passage mainly about
A. The urgency and challenges of studying krill.
B. The development of new methods to study krill.
C. The role of krill in the ecosystem and efforts to monitor them.

Genetic Testing
Genetic testing involves examining your DNA, the chemical database that carries instructions for your body’s functions. It provides information for diagnosing, treating and preventing illness.
_____67_____.
First, there is diagnostic testing. If you have indications of a disease that may be caused by genetic changes, sometimes called mutated genes, it can reveal if you have the suspected disorder.
Then comes presymptomatic and predictive testing. _____68_____. The purpose is to evaluate an individual’s likelihood of developing certain types of disorder, particularly when a family history of the condition exists.
Pharmacogenetics is the study of how genetic variations influence individual responses to medications. _____69_____. And this testing approach is clinically valuable in determining the most effective medication for patients.
Testing during pregnancy the state of having a baby developing inside the body, includes a range of medical procedures performed to identify genetic abnormalities in the developing baby. Traditionally this is done by looking at markers in blood or by interventional testing. Newer testing called cell-free DNA testing looks at a baby’s DNA via a blood test done on the mother.
_____70_____. It has become a standardized public health initiative within the first days of life to identify babies at risk for treatable genetic, or body chemistry disorders. This type of genetic testing is important because if results show there’s a disorder such as congenital hypothyroidism (先天性甲状腺功能减退症), care and treatment can begin right away.
A. Newborn screening is the most frequently conducted kind of genetic testing.
B. The application of genetic testing varies according to defined medical indications.
C. However, it’s important to note that there is a slight potential risk to human health.
D. It refers to genetic analyses carried out prior to the beginning of unhealthy change.

You Could Have “Recycling Misconception”!
It might be time to throw your preconceptions about recycling in the garbage. A decades-long effort to educate people about recycling has mostly backfired, according to new research.
The study, published in Nature Sustainability, found that an overemphasis on recycling has distracted us from better options for preventing waste. In open-ended surveys, Americans named recycling as the most effective thing they could do to reduce garbage in landfills, overlooking more successful strategies — such as generating less waste in the first place. The study revealed widespread confusion about the effectiveness of recycling. When asked to rank the Three Rs — “reduce, reuse, recycle” (already in the correct order) — in order of effectiveness, nearly half got the answer wrong.
Michaela Barnett, a study author, first owes this “recycling misconception” to decades of campaigns initiated by corporations, which has shifted blame for waste pollution to individuals rather than companies producing disposable products, those made to be thrown away after use. Barnett’s study also showed many people placed plastic bags and coffee cups into recycling bins, while not all of them can be recycled. It’s not really their fault: Recycling rules are confusing. For instance, the “chasing arrows” symbol on plastics has misled consumers into believing many items are recyclable when they are not. Less than 10% of global plastic is recycled, despite survey respondents estimating it at 25%.
Recycling, often overestimated as a cure-all in waste management, masks deeper systemic problems. True progress demands intentional reduction of consumption: choosing reusable cloth bags over single-use plastics; repairing old clothes instead of buying fast fashion. And true accountability must shift to corporations legally required to adopt sustainable manufacturing and eco-conscious design — ensuring they are responsible for using technology-based, large-scale solutions to reach clear carbon-reduction goals.

【原文】Orson Welles was an American actor, radio broadcaster, screenwriter, film and theatre director, magician and film producer. He spent his childhood in Chicago, but at the age of 15, he left his home and travelled around Ireland, walking and painting. He was a talented artist. When he reached Dublin, the capital of Ireland, he walked into the Gate Theatre and claimed to be a star of the American stage. We can’t tell whether or not the manager of the theatre believed the story, but he did give Welles a starring role in a new play. Welles was a hit with both the public and the critics.
After returning to the USA, he worked on a series of books called The Mercury Shakespeare, which were bestsellers for decades. But he achieved worldwide fame in 1938 with his radio broadcasting of the famous science fiction story, The War of the Worlds. The programme was in the style of a news report, and thousands of listeners panicked, believing that creatures from Mars really had conquered the Earth.
At the age of 26, Welles wrote, directed, produced and starred in a film named Citizen Kane, which many film critics consider to be the greatest film ever made. His acting was powerful and convincing. In one scene, his character became so angry that he destroyed a room with his bare hands. After this scene, Welles apparently walked off the set with blood on his hands, saying to himself ‘I felt it. I felt it.’

【原文】Before reading Watching the English by Kate Fox, I had never really thought about how English appeared to other cultures. Despite feeling a little defensive at times, I was genuinely laughing out loud as I read this highly entertaining book. It talks about the hidden social rules that confuse foreign visitors. For example, how we behave on public transport. It’s OK to ask questions like “Is this train going to Victoria ” — but otherwise, starting conversations with strangers on trains is simply not socially acceptable! In fact it’s absolutely normal for the English to spend years travelling on the same train together without exchanging a single word.
Despite this, people standing at a bus stop will often feel a need to break an uncomfortable silence by talking about the weather, but here again potential embarrassment waits for the unsuspecting visitor! “Weather-speak” usually starts with a question which invites the other person into a conversation: “Rather cold, isn’t it ” But the hidden rule here is we have to agree. Disagreeing could cause impoliteness and the conversation would probably come to a sudden end. The only way of stating our true feelings is first to agree — “Yes, it is, isn’t it ” — and then we can add a personal comment — “but I quite like this kind of weather”.

【原文】W: Have you heard about the idea of mining the deep sea
M: Yeah, I read that a robot might be used to mine metals from the ocean floor. Sounds amazing!
W: It really does. They plan to obtain from there some rare earth metals, which are crucial for making electronics like phones and batteries.
M: I saw that no country owns the deep sea, so the International Seabed Authority is in charge of giving mining permissions. That’s interesting.
W: True. They’ve already given 29 organizations the green light to explore and plan for mining. Some might start as early as 2027.
M: But isn’t there a risk to deep-sea ecosystems I remember reading about a test in 1989 where they disturbed the seafloor, and it still hasn’t fully recovered.
W: Absolutely. Some studies suggest deep-sea biodiversity is irreplaceable — many species there haven’t even been discovered yet. Disturbing the mud and rocks can harm marine life for a long time. Scientists are worried about the potential long-lasting damage.
M: It’s a tough call because we do need those metals for new technologies, especially for renewable energy sources. But should we risk harming the deep sea

71.A study in Nature Sustainability shows the decades-long recycling education has backfired. People suffer from “recycling misconception”, overrating recycling and ignoring better waste-prevention methods. Corporate campaigns wrongly shift blame, and confusing rules mislead people. 76.【答案】 My Favorite Cartoon Character
Among all the cartoon characters, my favorite one is Ne Zha. I’m deeply attracted by his rebellious spirit and his courage to face difficulties.
The moment that touches me most is when Ne Zha decides to sacrifice himself to save his parents and the people in his hometown. Despite being misunderstood and facing great pressure, he still chooses to shoulder the responsibility.
Ne Zha has had a profound impact on me. He teaches me to be brave in the face of challenges and to never give up easily.
