Several destinations around the globe are especially notable for their breathtaking spring offerings.
Puebla

Tourists can hike on the lower elevation (高度) trails that open in April and May, while those who love mammals can keep their eyes peeled forbears coming out of hibernation with their cubs.
Arches National Park
You’ll be comfortable while exploring the park’s 2,000 arches or biking along its scenic paved roads. If you’re willing to risk a cold front, you can avoid the crowds during a March trip. Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There’s a welcome familiarity, but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. But books don’t change, people do. And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.
The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our bond with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. Each has to pull their own weight.
There are three books I reread annually. The first, which I take to reading every spring, is Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost intoxicating (令人陶醉的), an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, as if a bottle of wine remaining more and more mellow as time flows.
While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. But remember, it’s you that have to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends.
14. What does the author imply in the first paragraph
A. Drinking with old friends is quite beneficial.
B. Either books or us are changeable along with time.
C. Rereading requires a large amount of time and money.
D. It is recommended to read one book over and over again.
15. What do you know about Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast
A. It’s a brief account of a trip.
B. It’s a record of a historic event.
C. It’s about Hemingway’s life as a young man.
D. It’s about Hemingway’s simple feast in Par s.
16. What does the phrase “highest currency” in paragraph 4 mean
A. The greatest honor given to an author’s work.
B. The best way to financially support poor authors.
C. The most challenging task for dedicated readers.
D. The quickest method to increase a book’s popularity.
17. How does the author emphasize the reader’s role in rereading
A. By urging readers to prioritize true friends over money.
B. By stressing readers need to grow to unlock a book’s depth.
C. By claiming readers must focus on the present instead of the past.
D. By suggesting readers should attach more meaning to gifted books.

In a world where tech companies often compete to create the next productivity tool, a new device is breaking away from the pack. Meet Friend: a new wearable AI companion that you wear around your neck. The small device records your every word and interaction and responds accordingly by text. They cost $99 and are expected to ship out in early 2025.
The device comes at a time when loneliness and social isolation (孤独) are at record highs. Studies indicate that 61% of young people in the U.S. suffer from serious loneliness, a statistic that reveals a growing mental health crisis. While AI reshapes all the ways we interact in jobs, healthcare and entertainment — more and more people report feeling socially isolated, Schiffmann, Meet Friend’s founder, sees it differently: the device isn’t a replacement for human relationships but rather a way to fill the gaps when human companionship is hard to come by.
AI companionship is controversial (有争议的). While some people, like Schiffmann, argue that it can help people feel less isolated, others worry that AI relationships might displace real human connections, and thus make people feel more lonely. If you are someone who already struggles with human interactions, the thinking goes, why would you continue to subject yourself to them when you have an AI friend who's fun and uncomplicated, and doesn’t come with all the baggage of another person
But so far, the research doesn’t seem to support this fear. Drake-Maples at Stanford University surveyed more than 1,000 students who used the AI chatbot Replika, and investigated their feelings of loneliness and perceived social support. Roughly half of these users reported decreased anxiety, and a feeling of social support. Nearly a quarter of those surveyed said they are more able to handle stress in their current relationship because of Replika’s advice.
It is still a new field though, and Drake-Maples says there needs to be guidelines. “I strongly believe that you do need to have ethical guidelines around AI companions pushing people back when appropriate, towards human relationships,” she says. These could be gentle reminders like “Hey, you should go chat with somebody about that” or “Go practice this now with a real human.”
18. What is Meet Friend aimed at
A. Replacing human relationships.
B. Boosting the productivity at work.
C. Offering a new approach to connection.
D. Detecting early symptoms of mental illness.
19. What does the underlined part “the thinking” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. AI helps avoid life’s stress.
B. AI worsens feelings of loneliness.
C. Human relationships are hard to keep.
D. It's easy to communicate with an AI friend.
20. What is Drake-Maples’ attitude towards AI companionship
A. Cautious. B. Unclear.
C. Supportive. D. Disapproving.
21. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Can we trust an AI friend
B. Will AI change human nature
C. Can an AI friend make us less lonely
D. Will AI redefine mental health crisis
D
Dreams have fascinated people for years, yet we struggle to understand their purpose. Some theories suggest dreams help us deal with emotions, solve problems or manage hidden desires. Others suggest they clean up brain waste or make memories stronger.
David Eagleman, a neuroscientist at Stanford University, suggests another theory. It takes into account that the human brain has an ability called neuroplasticity (神经可塑性) - certain areas are able to take on new tasks. He argues the brain distributes its resources by “carrying out a do-or-die competition” for brain territory where sensory areas “gain or lose neural territory when inputs slow, stop or shift”. “For example, people who lose sight or hearing show heightened sensitivity in the remaining senses,” says Eagleman.
When we sleep, we can smell, hear and feel, but visual information is absent - except during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. About 90 minutes after falling sleep, we enter REM sleep. It begins when neurons in your brain stem signal the beginning of two important tasks. Activity of these neurons, for one, paralyze motor nerves, hampering the sleeper’s acting out what is happening in the dream. Also, they send messages directly to the visual cortex (皮层), which starts the dreaming process. As long as the neurons in the visual cortex are actively performing their job, they won’t be taken over by nearby neurons that process other sensory information. Dreams are the brain’s way of fighting the takeover from other senses.
Eagleman argues that the more plastic the brain is, the more necessary REM sleep is for performing a defense. For babies to develop properly, they must sleep a lot, spending almost 50 percent of their time in REM sleep. But as people age, their brains become less flexible. At the same time, adults spend less time on REM sleep.
Deirdre Leigh Barrett, a psychologist at Harvard University, says, “Eagleman’s theory is very convincing.” However, some dream researchers have different views. They think although the blind mole rat does not see, it still experiences REM sleep. Yet some evolutionary adaptations are features that were useful in the past but have become less significant as animals have evolved. So perhaps there was no pressure for blind mole rats to lose REM activity as they evolved without vision.
22. Why does Eagleman mention the example in paragraph 2
A. To show the brain is highly adaptive.
B. To prove the neurons can repair themselves.
C. To explain the significance of the five senses.
D. To illustrate the unevenness of the brain resource.
23. What does the underlined word “hampering” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Conducting. B. Preventing. C. Spotting. D. Stimulating.
24. What can be inferred from Eagleman’s statements in paragraph 4
A. Brain plasticity increases as people get older.
B. REM sleep and brain plasticity are interrelated.
C. Adults need more sleep to keep fit than babies.
D. People’s aging process has little effect on REM sleep.
25. What do some dream researchers think of Eagleman’s theory
A. It lacks credibility.
B. Its theoretical basis is novel.
C. Its application is limited.
D. It agrees with evolutionary laws.

The less you spend, the more you save. It sounds simple in theory, but in practice, it’s much more complicated. Spending is built into our daily habits, which sometimes can get us addicted to buying stuff. ___26___ It’s kind of like a crash diet, but in a good way!
___27___
Despite the name, a no-spend challenge doesn’t mean you sit on your hands and spend no money whatsoever. After all, you don’t want to fall behind on your bills, and there are some necessities you simply can’t do without. The basic premise (前提) of a no-spend challenge is to cut out non-essential spending for a certain amount of time. It could be for a week, a month or even an entire year.
What can you spend money on during a no-spend challenge
If you need to purchase something during your no-spend challenge, it should be something that’s necessary and you absolutely can’t do without. So groceries, yes. Candy bar in the checkout line, no. Also, no new iPhone, even if you’ve been dreaming about an upgrade. No new shoes, even if they’re on a huge sale. This is not the time to make excuses to buy stuff you don’t really need. ___28___ The goal of this challenge isn’t to make life harder on yourself by cutting out spending on essential expenses.
The financial benefits of a no-spend challenge
___29___ You can use the extra money you normally would have spent to build up your emergency fund. Or you might want to put the money toward other financial goals, like saving for a new car or an upcoming vacation. While no-spend challenges are designed to be temporary, you can always extend your challenge. ___30___
A. Decide acceptable purchases.
B. What is a no-spend challenge
C. There should be no quick-fix approach.
D. When will you start your no-spend challenge
E. Why not treat it as more of a lifestyle change
F. Sometimes the best way is to go on a spending freeze.
G. A no-spend challenge can be a boost to your financial situation.

Mrs. Thompson, a retired teacher, was well-known for her insightful advice and genuine willingness to help others. Many high school students often turned to her for guidance and as her neighbor, me included.
One afternoon, feeling troubled and uncertain about my future after a disappointing exam,I decided to knock on Mrs. Thompson’s door.
“I don’t know what I’m doing with my life,” I admitted, my eyes fixed on the floor.“It feels like everyone else has it all figured out, and I’m just stuck.“ My voice trembled with sadness and a hint of fear.
I had bombed my last math test, and it felt like that failure stayed in every corner of my mind, increasing my anxiety about college examination and what I might want to pursue. While my friends seemed to advance effortlessly through their studies, I was struggling to stay afloat. The feeling that I was falling behind only deepened my sense of hopelessness.
Mrs. Thompson listened carefully, her face a picture of calm and understanding. Without saying much, she handed me a small tomato seedling (苗) in a pot. The tiny plant, with its delicate green leaves, seemed to symbolize a slight sign of hope.
”Let’s plant this in the garden,“ she said gently. “Water it every day and make sure it gets enough sunlight. But for a whole week, don’t focus on its progress. Just trust that it’s growing.”
Every day, I faithfully watered the little seedling, as if I was putting my own hopes into it.I carefully ensured it got the right amount of sunlight, positioning it just so under the sun’s rays. With great self-control, I resisted the urge to examine it too closely. As the days went by, I felt a mix of eagerness and impatience, like a child waiting for a long-promised gift, longing to see some sign that my efforts were making a difference.

Hello, everyone! I’m Li Hua, and I’m thrilled to share my hobby with you — reading. As Francis Bacon put it, “Reading makes a full man.” Books have been my constant companions, shaping my thoughts and broadening my horizons in ways I never imagined.
When I was younger, I struggled with expressing myself. Luckily, I discovered the magic key unlocking doors to different worlds and one particular book — To Kill a Mockingbird — changed my perspective completely. Not only did I learn about empathy, justice, and the courage to stand up, but it also showed me I’m never alone in struggles. Moreover, I’ve grasped the power of perseverance from characters overcoming hardships. Reading has deeply influenced my life.
Our hobbies are like mirrors that reflect who we are and who we can become. Let’s embrace our hobbies and let them shape us into better individuals.
Thank you!
Possible version 2
Hello, everyone! I’m Li Hua, and I’m thrilled to share my hobby with you — playing badminton. Badminton, serving as a wonderful stress reliever, has become an essential part of my life. After a long day of studying, a quick badminton match allows me to get refreshed and relaxed.
Over the past three years I’ve practiced it regularly, from learning basic skills to competing in school tournaments. Playing badminton has not only made me healthier but also shaped me into a more determined and focused person. It boosted my confidence, improved my focus, and brought me closer to friends. More importantly, I’ve learned perseverance and teamwork. When facing tough opponents, I don’t give up but keep trying different strategies.
In a nutshell, this sport has shaped me profoundly. Hobbies aren’t just pastimes — they mirror our passions and mold our character. So, let’s cherish our hobbies — they define who we are!
Thank you!
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】“Let’s go to check on the plant,” Mrs. Thompson said to me a week later. With a heart full of anticipation, I followed her to the garden. When we reached the spot where we’d planted the seedling, I was amazed. The once - tiny plant had grown significantly. Its leaves were greener and more robust, and it stood taller, reaching towards the sky.
