It in hard to imagine a place that's more dangerous than Death Valley.Death Valley is the hottest and the driest place in North America.
Death Valley isn't an easy place to live in. It gets less than two feet of rain a year and it's hot, too. In July, temperature often reaches over 46℃. There is even a lake that has turned into salt crystals (晶体).But it is cold at night. When it gets cold enough, the water on the ground will turn into very thin ice.Then the strong wind-like a large hand-can move the rocks along the icy ground. That is why the rocks can "walk" on their own in Death Valley.
Although the weather conditions in Death Valley are terrible, it is still filled with lives. Nothing can stop plants and animals from making it their home. People have found more than 1,000 kinds of plants there. It also has 51 kinds of mammals (哺乳动物)，6 kinds of fish, and more than 300 kinds of birds. The animals aren't all small, either.
Finding water is the biggest challenge for anything that lives here. Some plants have roots (根部) that go fifty feet under the ground to find water. Kangaroo rats get the water they need from flowers.

Do you know why different animals or pests (害虫) have their special colors Colors in them seem to be used mainly to protect themselves.
Some birds like eating locusts (蝗虫). But birds cannot easily catch them. Why It is because locusts change their colors together with the change of the colors of crops（庄稼）. Rivers are one of our most important natural resources（自然资源）. Many of the world’s great cities are located on rivers, and almost every country has at least one river flowing through it that plays an important part in the lives of its people.
Since the beginning of history, people have used rivers for transportation. The longest one in the United States is the Mississippi. The lifeline（生命线）of Egypt is the Nile. To the people of India, the Ganges is great, but it is also important for transportation. Ships can travel along it for a thousand miles. Other great rivers are the Congo in Africa and the Mekong in southeast Asia. The greatest of all for navigation（航海）, however, is the Amazon in Brazil. It is so wide and so deep that large ships can go about two thousand miles upon it.
Besides transportation, rivers give food, water to drink, water for crops, and chances for fun and recreation for the people who live along their banks. In order to increase the supply of water for crops, engineers sometimes build a dam（大坝）across a river and let a lake form behind the dam. Then people can use the water not only to irrigate（灌溉）their fields but also to make electricity for their homes and industries.
However, large cities and industries that are located upon rivers often make problems. As the cities grow in size and industries increase in number, the water in the rivers becomes polluted with chemicals and other materials. People are learning the importance, however, of doing more to keep their rivers clean if they want to enjoy the benefits（利益）of this natural resource.
