每年6月左右，坦桑尼亚大草原的青草被逐渐消耗，食物变得越来越少。为了食物，草原上的动物会长途跋涉3000多公里，上演地球上最壮观的动物大迁徙场面。 非洲动物大迁徙的根本原因是非洲草原有明显的 雨季和 旱季之分 。在旱季，植物地上部分枯死，食草动物缺乏食物，只能迁徙，而食肉动物也追随迁徙。
非洲大部分位于南北回归线之间，气候以热带草原和热带沙漠气候为主，降水有明显的干湿两季。这种季节性的降水变化导致水草的季节更替，进而影响动物的生存。东非地区的季节变化仅有旱季和雨季之分。动物们为了追逐新鲜的水源和食物，必须进行长距离的迁徙。这种迁徙是循环往复的，通常从每年的12月开始，到次年的5月结束。这种季节性的降水变化是导致非洲动物大迁徙的根本原因之一。
