In the fable, the king placed a stone in the road to test villagers’ response to it.

a great deal of +不可数名词，意为“大量的……”
常用于修饰不可数名词的单词和词组：

例句：

2. After a while, a group of women came along, each balancing a pot of water on her head.
句意：过了一会，一群女人走了过来，每个人头上顶着一坛水。
本句是一个简单句。句中each balancing a pot of water on her head为独立主格结构：名词/代词+doing/done。
例句：
A lot of people start travelling around, their footprints covering almost every corner of the world.
很多人开始环游世界，他们的足迹遍布世界的各个角落。

独立主格结构由两部分组成，前一部分是名词或者代词，后一部分是非谓语动词（不定式，现在分词，过去分词）或者形容词，副词，名词或介词短语。前后两部分有逻辑主谓关系。

二.注意事项

And I have the belief in its success due to the comparison between the reponse of the girl and the others, but the story was not succesful in achieving the purpose.

Sample Writing
“The Stone in the Road” is an old fable about a king who thinks his people are lazy, so he puts a large stone in the middle of the road and hides and waits to see if anyone will try to move it.
The author used this story to impress upon readers the need to take personal responsibility for problems in the community. The story was quite successful in achieving its purpose, and I liked it because it had a clear moral.
However, while the moral of the story is clear, the actions of the king seemed pointless to me, because none of the characters in the story learnt anything. For this reason, I think there are better stories that can be used to impress upon people the need for personal responsibility.

Once upon a time,there was an old farmer who planted a plot of rice.After he planted the seedlings,every day he went to the field to watch the seedlings grow.He saw the young shoots break through the soil and grow taller each day,but still,he thought they were growing too slowly.Eventually he got impatient with the young plants and suddenly he hit upon an idea that one by one,he pulled up the young plants by half an inch.The next early morning,the young man couldn’t wait to check his “achievement”,but he was heart-broken to see all the pulled-up young plants dying.

This story tells us that haste makes waste.Nowadays, people now use ” To Pull Up the Seedlings to Help Them Grow” to describe the behavior of those who are too eager to get something done only to make it worse.
In our life, we should do things according to the laws of nature. We should not be in a hurry for success. Otherwise, it will be just the opposite to what one wished. For this reason, I think we should work hard and we will succeed.I like this story because I think it is very meaningful and helpful to us.
