In August 2024, two high school students, Rosa Mendoza Sosa and Shanni Valeria Mora Fajardo, from Mexico were awarded the Diploma of Excellence at the 2024 Stockholm Junior Water Prize. It is a competition for students aged 15 to 20 who have developed research projects that can help solve major water challenges. The competition attracts tens of thousands of students from about 35 countries each year.
The two girls developed a process to efficiently reuse inked water, a common side product in various industries, making it a useful resource for growing vegetables. This method not only helps to save water but also promotes green agriculture.
The project idea was inspired by the girls’ link with their community’s textile heritage. “In our village, textiles are not just products; they are a symbol of our traditions, made with techniques passed down through generations,” explained Sosa, “but the use of artificial dyes (染料)mled to the direct disposal of dirty water into our environment.” This threatened their local water bodies and soil, endangering both the locals’ health and their environmentally friendly practices.
Faced with this dilemma, they made a filtration(过滤)system at home with materials from their area. They filled four containers with different kinds of materials, including cotton, charcoal, gravel, and sand. Then they measured pH levels and coloration before and after filtration. They noted changes in pH values, which now ranged from 7 to 8, making the water safe to drink.
The filtered water was then used to help spinach and radish seeds grow, and more tests are being planned for other appropriate vegetables. “By recycling and using water again, we can keep the environment clean while preserving our heritage,” said Sosa.
4. What was the main achievement of the two Mexican girls
A. Developing water testing equipment. B. Inventing new textile dyeing techniques.
C. Establishing a preservation organization. D. Recycling inked water for green agriculture.
5. What inspired the two girls’ project
A. The motivation to save water. B. The pollution caused by textile.
C. The demand for useful resources. D. The science competition held by school.
6. Why did the girls measure the pH levels of the filtrated water
A. To compare the water environment. B. To record the water quality changes.
C. To prove the effectiveness of the system. D. To find out suitable materials for filtration.
7. Which statement best describes the impact of the project
A. It benefits ecological and cultural protection.
B. It promotes international water competitions.
C. It prioritizes industrial profits over traditions.
D. It addresses the local government’s strategies.

In a nursing home in South China’s Shenzhen, an elderly resident curiously reaches out to hold the hand of Xia Lan, a humanoid robot with lifelike skin, blinking eyes and a warm, soothing voice.
China is witnessing a rapid integration of artificial intelligence and robotics into elderly care services, offering innovative solutions to the challenges of an aging population. The latest data shows that by the end of last year, China’s population aged 60 and above had reached 310 million, accounting for roughly 22 percent of its total. Elderly care robots, once a distant concept, are quickly becoming a reality for China’s aging population.
Although elderly care robots are still in their infancy compared to industrial robots, some users have already begun to experience the convenience they offer. At Shenzhen Nursing Home, robots are now a critical part of daily life, playing chess with seniors, offering AI-assisted moxibustion(艾灸)therapy and providing mobility assistance.
Across China, robotic solutions are transforming elderly care. In Shenyang, capital of Northeast China’s Liaoning province, a 70-year-old stroke survivor surnamed Zhang has regained his ability to walk using a special device developed by SIASUN Robot and Automation Co. In Chengdu, Pacific Care Home has introduced a companion robot named Yang Yang, which wakes residents each morning, provides weather updates and reminds them of their daily activities.
More humanoid elderly care robots like Yang Yang are set to enter the market. The Chengdu Humanoid Robot Innovation Center plans to launch a lightweight humanoid robot in June, designed specifically for family and wellness applications. It will be able to identify seniors, bring them medicines, chat with them and help them take showers. “Robots can bridge elderly care service gaps while fulfilling seniors’ emotional needs,” said Chen Yang, deputy general manager of the center.
“Robots are no longer just taking commands. They are evolving into AI-powered family members” said Zhang Yunquan, a researcher at the Institute of Computing Technology of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. “Future robots will be able to detect emotional changes, predict health risks and provide proactive care just like an AI companion at home,” Zhang said.
8. Why does the author list the numbers in paragraph 2
A. To describe great changes of China.
B. To compare different age groups in China.
C. To show the development of China’s population.
D. To stress the large size of China’s aging population.
9. What does the underlined word “infancy” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Large scale. B. Early stage. C. High position. D. Rapid development.
10. What can we know about the robot Yang Yang
A. It meets certain needs of the elderly.
B. It is designed to support the disabled.
C. It is mainly used for medical treatment.
D. It bridges the gap between family members.
11. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The risks of AI companion. B. The solutions to elderly care.
C. The functions of the future robots. D. The limitations of robotic services.
D
Rejection is an unavoidable part of the human experience, but despite suffering major and minor refusal throughout our lives, every time it happens people still feel painful. From the first “no thanks” from someone you fancy at school to the kick in the stomach of a “we have decided to move forward with another candidate” letter, every rejection damages our self-esteem.
Humans are hardwired to long for acceptance. “It’s in our blood,” says Hilda Burke, a psychotherapist. In early human societies, she explains, “to be rejected by your community would have posed a serious threat, as individuals did not have the resources to survive alone. We are pack animals.” Madeleine Jago, a principal clinical psychologist, says, “The brain processes rejection using the same neural pathways as physical pain, which may explain why rejection feels so sharp and lasting on a psychological level.”
Rejection can also alter our behavior, creating a negative self-fulfilling prediction, explains Jago. “Believing you’re unworthy or that future rejection is unavoidable leads to avoidance behaviors, such as withdrawing from social situations or not pursuing new opportunities, reinforcing the fears you have.”
Rejection is an unavoidable part of the employment process. Modern employment has seen automated systems eliminate (消除) any subjective human perspective, overlooking some candidates’ personal skills. This creates a dehumanizing environment for job seekers who have spent hours crafting a covering letter, only to receive a rejection email minutes later. “Stay stoic!” says Louise Campbell, manager of the careers network at University College Dublin Michael Smurfit Graduate School of Business.
The key, she says, is to focus on what is in your control, particularly your response. “Each time you get rejected, take care to actively separate your pride from external outcomes. It’s an opportunity to reassess, strengthen skills, and find a role that corresponds better with your values.”
External context is also overlooked, she adds. “I have seen candidates experience being left hanging after an interview, only to find the role was halted(突然停止)due to a hiring freeze, or filled by an internal employee.” Being aware of these factors can help to ease disappointment.
12. Why does rejection feel physically painful according to the text
A. It poses a severe threat to people’s survival alone.
B. It causes long-term stomach damage and disability.
C It challenges human nature to be accepted by others.
D. It activates the same neural pathways as physical pain.
13. What negative consequences can rejection create
A. Unexpected career advancement. B. Blindly increased social engagement.
C. Overconfidence leading to more failures. D. Avoidance behaviors worsening self-doubt.
14. Why is “being left hanging after an interview” mentioned in the last paragraph
A. To criticize unprofessional hiring practices.
B. To highlight the importance of reassessment.
C. To illustrate how external factors explain rejection.
D. To recommend candidates to follow up persistently.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Reasons for Job-seeking Rejection
B. The Unavoidable Rejection in the Digital Life
C. From Rejection to Flexibility: A Path to Growth
D. Social Pain: The Evolutionary Science of Rejection

Leo, a young man in his mid-twenties, was walking home from work on a dark, rainy evening. The streets were wet with rainwater, reflecting the faint light of streetlights as thunder rumbled in the distance. The bone-chilling wind howled like a wolf, making the darkness even more suffocating. Holding his umbrella tightly, he walked quickly along the sidewalk.
As he turned the corner, he noticed a homeless man seeking shelter in a doorway. Trembling in the dark, his old clothes sticking to his thin body, and his hands shook as he pulled his torn jacket around himself. His face was lined with deep wrinkles, showing years of difficulty and tiredness.
Without a second thought, Leo approached the man and offered him his umbrella. Surprised by his gesture, the man looked up with his tired eyes opening wide. “Are…are you sure ” He asked hesitantly. But Leo insisted, saying, “Please, take it. You need it more than I do.”
Grateful, the man accepted the umbrella and introduced himself as Michael. Sensing that he could need a warm meal and company, Leo invited him to join him at a nearby café. Inside the warm little café, the air was filled with the smell of hot coffee and fresh bread. Leo ordered two cups of coffee and two sandwiches. As they sat near the window, watching the rain hitting the glass, Michael shared his story with Leo. He had once been a successful businessman, running his own small company. But after a sudden financial problem, he lost his company, then his house. A painful divorce came next, leaving him with nothing. “One misfortune followed another,” he said softly, looking down at his coffee. “Before I was aware of it, I was living on the streets.”
As Leo listened to his tale, he realized how easily life could change. By the time they finished their meal, he knew he couldn’t just walk away. His heart was filled with sympathy and a desire to help.

【答案】Dear Mike,
I’m writing to tell you about a “Class Plant Adoption Activity” in our school. Each class can adopt a plant, take care of it and record its growth. During the process, students will water the plants regularly and observe how they sprout, blossom and thrive. Moreover, there will be a competition at the end of the activity, and the class with the healthiest looking plant will win a prize. It can not only help us develop a sense of responsibility but also foster a deep love for nature.
Are you interested in joining this activity Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】 One day, Leo got in touch with Michael to tell him good news. He excitedly told Michael that he’d found a friend who owned a small store and was looking for an assistant. Remembering Michael’s business experience, Leo recommended him. Michael was overjoyed and tearfully thanked Leo. With Leo’s help, Michael prepared for the interview carefully. During the interview, he impressed the store owner with his knowledge and enthusiasm.
Weeks turned into months, Michael worked hard to rebuild his life. He arrived at the store early every day, cleaned the shelves, and warmly served customers. His efforts paid off as he gradually won the trust of the store owner and customers. After half a year, he was promoted to store manager. He also saved enough money to rent a decent apartment. On a sunny day, Michael invited Leo to a celebratory dinner, expressing his eternal gratitude for giving him a new lease on life.
