In 2020,we celebrated Smokey Bear,s 75th birthday as a national fire prevention icon(形象). Many know Smokey,s message:“Only YOU can prevent wildfires ”,but fewer people may know that Smokey was a real American black bear rescued,in the spring of 1950,from a violent wildfire in New Mexico.
The Los Tablos and Capitan Gap fires, which burned over 17,000 acres, were s toked by 70-mile-per-hour winds that made the fires hard to fight. The Taos Pueblo Snowball crew formed when the war chief called all available firefighters to put out the big fire in the Lincoln National Forest. Twenty-five volunteers boarded a school bus and began the long journey to fight the growing fires, fueled by s trong winds and high temperatures. It was only the second fire-fighting experience for the newly-established crew. The men spent 28 long days fighting the fires.
The crew rescued the five-pound American black bear who later became known as “Smokey”out of the embers(余烬). Adolph Samora,a member of the Snowball crew, remembered putting out fire hotspots when some other firefighters called him over to what looked like a crumpled(皱的)jacket lying on the ground.
“The little bear was covered,”he said. “I picked it up and placed it in my arms. The bear had burns all over its hands and feet. ”Crew members wrapped the three-month-old bear in their own jacket s to protect its badly burned paws when they transported it to safety.
A local family nursed “Smokey ”back to health ,and the bear was later moved to the National Zoo in Washington,D. C. ,where it lived for the next 26 years.
The Forest Service and the U. S. Advertising Council created Smokey Bear in 1944. Since then,Smokey Bear has become the longest running public service campaign in our nation,s history ,helping in its lifelong mission of fire prevention.
24. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “s toked”in paragraph 2?

Digital health tools, such as patient portals(门户网站),treatment apps and online appointment schedulers, are increasingly common. But not everyone is equally at home using them. To find out how language, education and age may affect a person,s comfort in using digital tools,UC San Francisco(UCSF)researchers surveyed caregivers of hospitalized children at UCSF Benioff Children,s Hospitals.
The researchers found that being a Spanish speaker, having less education, and being older all made people feel less comfortable with digital health tools. “Digital health tools are meant to improve health access and outcomes ,but they must be useful for people from all backgrounds to avoid deepening existing health inequities,”said Naomi Bardach, professor of pediatrics at UCSF Benioff Children,s Hospitals. “We don,t want to leave people behind, whether they are older adults, people with lower education,or those of a specific race,or language background. ”
Researchers asked how well people felt they could engage with digital tools, how motivated they were to use them, and how safe and in control they felt while they were using them. This was intended to measure people,s concerns about the privacy of digital health tools.
Education was the most important factor, after language. Having a high school education or less was most s trongly associated with lower scores in all three areas measured. Latinx and Black caregivers scored significantly lower on “feeling safe and in control”with digital tools. Rural caregivers, however, scored higher on the privacy measure, and they were more motivated to use digital tools. Those over 45 were less motivated to use digital tools, and they also felt less safe and in control while using them.
“Accessing these tools affect s all kinds of things ,like requesting medication refills online ,tracking the number of s teps per day,or helping a child play a therapeutic game for ADHD,”Bardach said. “We all need to be thinking about how to make sure people can use them comfortably, and if they can,t,how to provide an alternative. ” 28. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. What affect s people,s comfort in using digital health tools. B. Why digital health tools need to be improved in diversity.
C. What are the advantages of using digital health tools. D. How digital health tools may impact the patient s.
29. What does Bardach attach importance to about a digital health tool in paragraph 2?
A. Its safety. B. Its accuracy. C. Its universality. D. Its efficiency.
30. What has the greatest effect on using digital health tools according to the text?
A. Education. B. Age. C. Race. D. Language.
31 . What ,s implied about digital health tools in the last paragraph?
A. They are not affordable for most people. B. Ensuring their comfort to users is essential.
C. Providing an alternative to them is impossible. D. They are primarily designed for younger users.

Seabird colony(群体)survey data collected over 55 years was used to estimate the number of birds nesting on the 280 atolls in the Indo-Pacific. The s tudy, published in the journal NatureEcologyandEuolution, also measures the nutrient contribution of the birds to the ecosystem.
Atolls are ring-shaped coral reef islands that enclose a lagoon(环礁湖). They form when a dead volcano sinks lower, leaving behind the coral reef that has grown around its edge. Of the about 440 atolls in the world, most are in the Pacific Ocean. Their combined surface area only makes up about 0. 02% of the total island area in the Indo-Pacific region.
However, the new s tudy shows that their importance to seabirds far outweighs their relatively small total area. “We calculate that over 31 million seabirds— about 25% of the world,s tropical seabirds— are nesting on atolls,”says first author Sebastian Steibl from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. “At least 14 seabird species have more than half of their global populations nesting on atolls. ”This is also just a small part of historical populations using the atolls for breeding and nesting.
The authors also note the importance of seabirds and,by extension, the atolls they rely on for the broader ecosystem. “Seabirds are globally important mediators(媒介)of ecological connectivity between land and sea,” they write. “They transport nutrients in the form of bird droppings from marine feeding grounds to their nesting sites. ”
The research highlights the importance of conserving seabird colonies and the atolls amid growing environmental challenges such as warming oceans and rising sea levels. “Protecting atolls is therefore not only important for seabird conservation—in turn, seabirds on atolls are also supporting the functioning of the atolls themselves, which might be key to building resilience(适应力)against climate change,”Steibl says.
“Many atoll islands that bear legacies of colonial exploitation are today uninhabited,”says Steibl. “Building on the here-established global importance of atolls for seabird conservation, these uninhabited atoll islands offer themselves as main target sites for future seabird conservation and restoration plans. ”
32. What does the new s tudy show?
A. Atolls are formed by volcano eruption. B. The ecosystems of the Indo-Pacific are threatened.
C. Atolls are important for seabirds. D. Seabirds in the Pacific are facing extinction. 33. What can we know about seabirds from paragraph 4?
A. They control fish populations near atolls. B. They act as mediators for plant s on atolls.
C. They protect coral reefs from warming up. D. They transport nutrient s from the sea to land. 34. What probably poses the biggest threat to the atolls at present?
A. Climate change. B. Fishing ships. C. Volcanic activities. D. Ocean pollution.
35 . Why are the atoll islands suitable for seabird conservation?
A. They have larger lagoons for nesting.
B. They are unaffected by human activities.
C. They have no sea animals threatening seabirds.
D. They serve as many colonial habitat s for animals. 第二节 (共5小题;每小题 2. 5分,满分 12. 5 分)

My best day ever began when I decided to take a trip to explore the world alone. Leaving my home and family,I set out to discover new cultures and ways of life.
The moment that made this journey so meaningful for me was when I visited an orphanage(孤儿院) for children with disabilities. Seeing the courage and s trength these kids had and the determination they displayed in their daily lives was truly inspiring. This experience changed my view on life forever.
My visit to the orphanage happened by chance when I wandered into a small village during my travels. A kind local woman noticed me looking lost and invited me to join her for a meal. Over plates of fragrant rice and fresh vegetables, she shared the s tory of the orphanage ,located just a short walk from her home. Her eyes shone with pride as she spoke of the children. I felt a tug at my heart and asked if I could visit the place.
The next morning ,she led me to the orphanage ,a modest building with colorful walls painted by the children themselves. As soon as I entered,I was greeted with laughter and a deep sense of warmth. A young boy named Ravi rolled up to me in his wheelchair, his face beaming with a smile. “Welcome!”he said with infectious enthusiasm ,holding out a hand for a handshake. At that moment ,I realized I wasn,t just a visitor. I was s tepping into a world full of extraordinary s trength and beauty.
I spent the day learning about their lives. Eachchildhadastory that couldbreakyourheart andmend(修复)it in the same breath.
