高频词汇:如 conclusion(结论)、purpose(目的)、indicate(暗示)等,需掌握一词多
"The book (that I borrowed from the library last week) is considered one of the most influential
works (written in the 21st century)."
需快速提取主干 "The book is considered influential works",并理解修饰成分。
Tom handed
the wallet to the police → Honest)。
圈画路标词(转折词 but/however、因果词 because/thus)。
What should we do to protect the environment
A
The Zhongyuan Festival, also known as Ullambana Festival among Buddhists (佛教徒),
falls on the fifteenth day of the seventh lunar month, on Aug 12 this year.
Since ancient times, the Chinese have believed that the gates of hell open on that day and so
people hold many activities to honor the ghosts. Therefore, the festival is also called the Ghost
Festival.
There are two other festivals in China to honor gone family members: Qingming Festival
and the Double Ninth Festival. In both, living young people pay respect to their dead ancestors.
Zhongyuan Festival is different from these, because the dead are believed to visit the living.
Buddhists believe that by offering things on that day, dead parents and relatives can be
saved from bad situations in the after life. The Ullambana Festival of Buddhism has two
meanings. One is to ask people to provide for Buddhist monks (僧侣). The other is to encourage
people to do more good deeds to release gone family members from fault and support family love
and care.
The Ullambana Festival is related to the legend of Mulian Saves His Mother.
It is said that after going through hardships in the lower world, Mulian finally saw his
mother, only to find her being punished by hungry ghosts. Mulian wanted to send his mother rice
and dishes, but the food was taken by the hungry ghosts. Mulian had to ask Buddha for help.
Moved by his deep love for mother, Buddha told him to take part in an Ullambana Fast on
July 15 of the lunar calendar (历法). On that day, food of many kinds and five fruits—peaches,
plums, apricots, chestnuts and dates—should be provided to all Buddhist monks.
Under the instruction, Mulian filled the Ullambana bowl with fruits and vegetarian food to
his mother on July 15. His hungry mother finally got the food. To show his thanks to the Buddha,
Mulian held a giving activity every year to release the hungry ghosts from the disaster of being
hanged by their feet.
Then the day has become a festival to honor departed ancestors, relatives and friends.

Choose the best answer
Tour guides share why exploring the city on foot is now one of the hottest trends in such
summer heat.
Summer may have been hot, but even this has not stop many people from exploring the city
of Shanghai through walking tours. On platform Xiaohongshu, the hashtag “Shanghai city walk”
had over 30 million views.
The term “city walk” is believed to have started from London, where London Walks was
founded half a century ago by Keith Baverstock, an Australian. Although there is no official
explanation of “city walk”, it usually refers to a walking tour around the city. It is usually themed
around topics like history, culture, architecture, food and music.
According to a report, more than 80 percent of the 1,505 people surveyed would like to try
city walks. The report also stated that the top five aims were the following: cultural scenes, food
and restaurants, natural landscapes, clothes and local life.
One person who has toured Shanghai on foot is Gao Shan, a 25-year-old civil engineer. He
says that summer is a good time for city walks because there are usually fewer crowds. The key to
staying cool, he adds, is walking under the leaves along the streets. During a business trip in
Shanghai, Gao took a walk around Tongji University and the Bund, with the aim of enjoying the
scenery and the buildings.
But not all city walks need to have an aim. The free walking tours conducted by Guo
Feixiang, for example, are simply about travelling around the streets with no goal. The
28-year-old has organized 16 walks in Shanghai and Hangzhou, attended by 400 people. The
reason, says Guo, who has been working in Hangzhou for the past few years, was simply to meet
new people.
“It isn’t easy for non-locals to make friends outside of work. But through a city walk, we
can do so and feel less lonely in an unfamiliar city. It could possibly also connect us with someone
whom we can turn to.” says Guo, who is an English teacher.
1.Which country does Keith Baverstock come from
A.London. B.England. C.Australia. D.China.
2.City walkers may be interested in the following themes except ________.
A.history B.food C.agriculture D.music
3.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the report
A.1505 people took part in the survey.
B.Only 80 people among the 1505 participants want to explore the city on foot.
C.Most people in the survey would like to try city walks.
D.City walkers have interest in local food and clothes.
4.Why does summer is a good time for city walks, according to Gao
A.Because it is one of the hottest trends in such season.
B.Because there are leaves to keep cool.
C.Because the scenery and the buildings are best in this season.
D.Because there are usually fewer crowds in summer.
5.The underlined word “conducted” in the last paragraph probably means “________”.
A.organized B.joined C.watched D.connected
6.Which of the following statements is true
A.28-year-old Guo Feixiang, an engineer, works in Hangzhou.
B.Non-locals often feel hard to make friends after work.
C.All city walks need certain goals such as cultural scenes and local life.
D.Gao Shan took a business trip in Shanghai with the aim of meeting new people.

Courses are given by the teachers of King’s College and other
colleges in New York.
Foreign students should send their applications before October 10,
故选 A。
A letter of recommendation from a teacher
Daily lesson:$200,Sports and activities:$100,Travels:$
You may choose to live with your friends
or relatives in the same city.
从第一句 for all the high school students who want to improve their English,
King’s College Winter School is
Trips to museums and culture centers are
also organized.“参观博物馆和文化中心也是有组织的。”
Foreign students
should send their applications before October 10,2016.
故选 A。

Tonight, Mom called for a “house meeting”. She told us that she was going back to school to
start taking lessons. Well, it was totally out of my expectation. She is always there when I get
home from school, and that’s the way I like it. But now, we have to make our own dinners and

The first few nights with Mom away have been a disaster. We tried making our dinner by

why I didn’t do my job this morning. He said I needed to start being more responsible.
I’ve heard it from Dad before. Last summer, our neighbor Ms. Grove, asked me to look after the
plants while she went on business. Well, I watered them several times for the first few days and I
got busy with other things. Ms. Grove was pretty mad because most of the plants didn’t make it.
Thursday
Dad is really serious about me taking on more responsibility. And first he wants me to wake
myself up in the morning. That’s actually a real problem.
Yesterday was the first day I tried to wake myself up, and it didn’t work out. My alarm
clock went off, but the sound just worked its way into my dream. And today didn’t go any better.

Afthur sat at the desk in his room, pencil in hand. He had to write a story for his English class by
Friday. "I don't know what to write about." he complained to his dog Toby, who was asleep at his
feet. Arthur was talkative when speaking to his friends. Yet he had trouble finding words when he
had to write.
By bedtime Arthur bad drawn a picture of Toby smiling. He had drawn a tree with its branches
blowing in the strong wind. He had also written a note asking his friend Lee to go to the movies

On Wednesday. Mrs. Solomon, Arthur's English teacher. asked the class to turn in the draft(草
稿) of their stories. Arthur's heart sank. He turned in the only work he had-the page with his
name, the drawings and the note.
Arthur wasn't surprised when Mrs. Solomon asked him to stay after class the next day. But he

"Oh - Mrs. Solomon replied, "Look at your note and the pictures and
see if a story comes to you."

to meet his friend Julio at the cinema. It looked as if it might rain. so Mike carried his
umbrella Suddenly a big storm blew in, bending the trees. .The noise of the .wind sounded like
the barking of Mike's dog Toby. Toby really hated storms and barked whenever he wanted to be
let inside. Then Mike realized that it wasn't the sound of the wind. It was Toby. The dog was
running after him down the busy street, barking. The sound was filled with blame(责备). Mike
felt sorry because he had left Toby outside. He turned and headed home with Toby running beside
him. Mike let Toby in the door just as the rain started to pour down."
' Arthur had a story in the end. The last thing he did was to write his name proudly at the top of
the page.
