Orion Jean is a 10-year-old boy from Fort Worth, Texas. He is making a difference in the world with his acts
of kindness. And these acts may change the lives of people he has helped.
It all began after a student kindness competition last year where he gave encouraging words to share about
taking the first step. “Kindness is a virtue (美德) we can all have, if we are willing to,” he said. “So why not start
today Because right now, it’s what we need more than ever.”
With the $500 prize money he won, Orion donated (捐赠) toys to a local children’s hospital. Next, he helped
prepare 100,000 meals for families in Texas. And now he wants to give books to kids who may not have them and
plans to collect 500,000 books in a “race to kindness”.
Kherri Jean, Orion’s mother, wrote on her Facebook page on July 31 that Orion had already collected over
120,000 books. “Today was one of my favorite days!” she said. “We had a ‘Race to Kindness’ free book fair for
children and their parents. It was so great to see kids looking for books they like and taking them home!”
And even if he hasn’t met the goal of 500,000 books, Orion has done far more to put books into the hands of
poor children than most. “It’s all about my moral responsibility (道德责任) to help people,” Orion said. “You know,
it’s my responsibility to be able to see these people who need help know that I can help them.”

Supermarkets are trying out new computers that make shopping carts (购物车) more intelligent (智能的).
They will help shoppers find paper cups or toilet soap, and keep a record of the bill.
The touch-screen devices (触屏装置) are on show at the Food Marketing Institute’s exhibition (展览) here
this week, “These devices are able to create value and get you around the store quicker,” said Michael Alexander,
manager of Springboard Retail Networks Company, which makes a smart cart computer called the Concierge.
Canadian stores will test the Concierge in July. A similar device, IBM’s “Shopping Buddy”, has recently been
test-marketed at Stop & Shop stores in Massachusetts.
Neither device tells you how many fat grams (克) are in your cart, but they will quickly show you items (物品)
on sale. The idea is to make it easier for people to buy, not to have second thoughts that maybe you should put
something back on the shelf.
When people at the store, a shopper can use a preferred customer card, which is based on people’s shopping
lists they have made at home, to start a system. This system will organize the trip around the store. If you’re
looking for toothbrushes, you type in the word or pick it from a list, and a map will appear on the screen showing
where you are and where you can find them.
The device also keeps a record of what you buy. When you’re finished, the device counts out your bill. Then
you go to the checker or place your card into a self-checkout stand and pay.
The new computerized shopping assistants (助手) don’t come cheap. The Buddy devices will cost the average
store about 160,000 for all devices, and the Concierge will cost stores about $500 for each device.

Twenty-one teams of robots from cities including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangdong raced on a 21.1-kilometer
course alongside human runners, proving (证明) how robots can handle real-world tasks like long-distance running.
The winner, Tiangong Ultra from the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center, finished in 2 hours 40

avoid (避免) overheating. Other teams, such as Whirlwind Kid and Little Giant (a 75-centimeter-tall robot),
impressed with shock-absorbing shoes and AI-powered balance control on slopes and gravel (碎石) paths.
The race tested the robots’ limits. The track had 14 sharp turns and steep slopes. It also included different
surfaces like grass and gravel. Teams could swap (更换) batteries at seven supply (补给) stations. If teams replaced
the whole robot, they lost 10 minutes. Some robots wore special shoes to protect joints (关节), while others used

I am glad to be here to give a speech.
Trees are very important to us. They give us oxygen, clean the air, and provide homes for animals. They also
stop soil from washing away and make our world beautiful. To protect trees, we should stop cutting them down
freely. We can recycle paper, use both sides of it, and plant more trees. Never waste paper, like throwing away
notebooks with blank pages. Let’s work together to protect trees! Small actions can make a big difference. Tell your
friends and family that they should join us. Remember, saving trees means saving our future!
Thank you for your listening!
